Didn't think I'd need to add the /s, but I was being sarcastic. ;)

To be fair, I specifically said:
Which refered to an unspecified point in the future after 7.x, likely when the game is going or closing in on maintenance mode. 6.0 or 7.0 I specifically mentioned as being able to release them on their own merits if the dev team overcomes whatever it is that makes them so hard to implement.
IIRC when the Hrothgar was revealed, the initial crowd reaction was an audible groan with some half hearted applause. From a PR standpoint, they really shouldve inverted the reveals - Hrothgar first, and Viera second. Revealing Viera first set a soft expectation, particularly with all the leaks and what not. SE decided to let the speculation about male viera run a bit unchecked when they couldve nipped it in the bud so some people wouldnt have had their hopes dashed.
It was the same reaction with Dancer, really. People were happy to see it, then were very quick to voice their displeasure when they were told it was going to be a ranged dps. And that was coming from the JP audience, too, of all audiences. When you've made your core fan base audibly say "WTF?" then I think mistakes were made. lol
He really wasn't. lol I remember that as well. The look on his face was basically this:
https://media.giphy.com/media/5t9wJj...cPNk/giphy.gif
Clearly he took that to heart and released a healer this time around. lol
If you saw the Showcase, so far the 1st thing we know is that the 4 healers are gonna be classified as a "Pure Healer and a "Shield Healer"
Wht and Ast will now be Pure Healers (Amusingly They play the same, only diff is the Draw system)
SCH and SGE(?) will be Shield Healers.
If Scholar is anything to go on, a Shield Healer will Prioritize Mitigation and probly have more DPS options. (I know, ShB they took away alot of DPS, but that might change now)
Oh yeah, forgot they mentioned that. But Im still curious about the skill layout. If they go with DPS Orientated vs Mitigation, arent theyre gonna run into the issue in previous xpacs where SCH was the defacto choice for savage cause its damage output was pretty high. Though maybe they could die damage to mitigation (as in if shield pops, it deals damage, otherwise its just flat mitigation).
(I know we are going off topic, but Im gonna be the lazy one and NOT make or find a separate Thread. Call the police, Ill fite 'dem :P )
I think he also said that the Optimal choice is gonna be to Balance a Shield Healer with a Pure Healer. I dont know if that means they are gonna do some balancing or set things up to where Having 2 Shield healers; who lets assume that have more DPS options then Pure Healers....will be a detriment because by taking out a Pure Healer you run a risk of not surviving some encounters and challenges. Like you can only Mitigate so much damage, now you need REAL heals.
Id like it if they could find a way to do that, because there will always be a meta, but I think every Job should be viable in any composition. Plus it would just be weak if Scholar and Sage become mandatory and everyone sleeps on WHT and Now Ast.
I don't even understand why they genderlocked Viera and Hrothgar. Sure, male Viera live in the trees, whatever. There's also literally millions of white mages running around everywhere. Also I can't say I even know a single thing about female Hrothgar. If anyone has information on female Hrothgar please tell me about them... But when I first learned that they were genderlocked, it honestly just came across as they were short on time or something. Same issue with the hats; it's like they just shoved them out to they player base before they were complete. No good reason to have an aesthetically limited race in this game, considering how much hair and clothes clip anyways.
Plus for me, aesthetics is pretty important. I like playing dress up. I hope SE fixes the hat issue and gives us the other sex for Viera and Hrothgar.
To catch you up with 1k+ pages of text, the Long Story Short was the devs wanted to have their cake and eat it and tried to please two different groups at once. Essentially they changed gears about mid way through development to include viera, at the expense of Female Hrothgars. They wanted the more beastlike race to give options to players coming from other MMOs, while giving Viera to the hardcore fanbase that revolves around them. So we got what we got on release. The sticking point unfortunately is that with the current 'character creation' engine they use, every time they introduce a new race (or sex), they have to more or less go back and manually fit all existing equipment onto those models. That alone is a huge burden on their resources, especially when every new xpac drops, thats gonna be an easy 100+ new peices they have to manually adjust. Top this off with the fact that they have issues implementing both Viera and Hrothgar in terms of customization (lack of hats, hairstyles, and other aspects), and of course you get enough of the player base (though probably not the majority) not happy with how they went about this.
What I and others have pointed out, though, that the thing holding them back is the antiquated engine for characters. If they were to just sink the energy and resources into updating it to be on par with more modern MMOs, theyd be killing a flock of birds with a stick of dynamite. Itd give the people who want more customization what they want, help insulate the game against showing its age, fix a lot of the issues associated with adding races, and correct issues with Hrothgar and Viera that exist. Considering the lack of updates on Hrothgar and Viera along with other things, there is a ok possibility that this is what theyre intending to do. No guarentees though, just cross your fingers.
Yoshi-P already addressed this years ago and said that the level of effort to go back and fix everything wouldn't be worth the result. He said that at that point, they might as well make a new game. Even if Yoshi-P wanted to overhaul the code, it's SE that would make the call and provide him the budget and other resources in order to make that a reality and I don't think that's ever going to happen. I don't believe there is a reason for SE to think that would make sense and lead to them getting more paying customers or higher retention rates that could cover all of the costs required for this.
Also, I think the state of viera and hrothgar is due to rushing, compromising, and believing that the players would accept their decisions for having 1 gender per race and no hats. It doesn't make sense for them to have any secret objective.
I dont think there is a hidden agenda. YoshiP stated what he did because at that time, that was the case. FFXIV has been known to run a shoe string budget and yet turned out fairly successful. So not having the resources to do a lot of what we want was the norm. But that model likely will have to change, particularly with how successful ShB was. The simple fact FFXIV:ARR was released in 2013 with a character engine that was already outdated by its launch, and has not received all that much attention since launch. Things they should be able to implement fairly easily are incredibly difficult for the devs. Not to mention weird quirks within the engine (lalafell breast sliders?). And spending time to update the engine so they can streamline other processes (like the issue with armor and glamour) would mean spending money and time now to save costs later. This is incredibly common in virtually every business enterprise. Every so often, spending a hunk of cash to streamline internal processes for more efficiency and long term benefits. Also, if they were to do it, they could potentially give us those off sexes that people want.
So addressing the character creation engine resolves a whole slew of requests and issues that lie specifically with that part of the game, and will help extend the games lifespan and remain competitive on the MMO market.
Now as I said before, this isnt a guarantee. They may just stick to what they have and continue to struggle with it no matter how they proceed. But it makes more sense long term to update the engine as that would give them a lot more flexibility going forward and would likely pay for itself a lot quicker than you might suggest. It also explains why there has been almost no movement on fixing hrothgar/viera, would enable the possibility of off sexes, and be a selling point for the next xpac.
It's also worth noting that flying in ARR realms was once upon a time "Never going to happen". Yet devs took time to do that. And that is a pretty hefty thing to do because there are huge areas in the ARR maps that needed fixing. Taking on heavy tasks to update the game and keep it fresh is not unheard of.
If he hadn't explicitly said that he plans to keep the game going for another decade I'd be willing to believe that some things aren't going to happen. If SE truly does plan to keep it going for that long, I'm sure they are well aware they it will need to be brought up to speed in order to last even half as long. I have a feeling we will see some changes happen. I just don't know if it will be during Endwalker.
It Needs to happen.
Yeah...
Even if there were 5 pure healers and 5 shield healers... I don't expect it to happen.
And it would come with many other problems, but... part of me would still love to see it.
Like, any combo of DPS is going to be more effective in some fights, but less so in others. But with this healer rework... if they're planning on balancing content around parties having a specific comp (1 pure & 1 shield) I feel there should be a structure in game asserting that comp.
Ah well, we'll have to see what happens. I don't imagine that comp will be a necessity (or anything close) but we'll have to see how it all shakes out in 6.0.
While I will admittedly be sad, even a rather disapointed (because it means we will have to wait a minimum of 4 years to ge tthem) if male viera and female hrotgar arent announced in the next fanfest for 6.0, I really, really highly doubt that if the game is gonna go for 10 years they will stay 10 years without updating the engine or just adding the missing gneders (and likely a new race in some expacs) as selling points of future expansions, that given how the game shows no intention to truly mix it up with each expansion they will need as many selling points for each of them, as just 'more of the same but new story' is unlikely to keep players invested for 10 years.
Final Fantasy XI is still going as a paid service despite the ancient graphics, Abyssea being a controversial addition, no new races ever added, and no new jobs in 8 years. FFXIV has wider appeal than FFXI ever did and was never a grindfest so I think it has staying power.
Look at how many players play FFXI, if FFXIV wants to continue as one of the most popular MMOs for 10 years they will need some serious upgrades to be able to compete with the newer, shinier, more advanced mmos of a similar niche, such as for example blue protocol, pso2 ngs and many others that are likely to come (not to mention the league mmo is likely gonna be a force to be reckoned with and it will most likely be rerleased before 10 years into the future).
I agree that FFXIV needs to keep remaining fresh by adding in new features/jobs/etc. That should potentially include rounding at the remaining races with Viera and Hrothgar's missing genders. Heck maybe even in the future they could fully add Lupin.
That said it does not need to happen overnight and should obviously be handled with care. I realize its a LOT of work to rescale and adjust current armors to fit new races. But I feel it should still happen. Including the missing hats for the newer races.
But we have time if they intend to keep FFXIV going for atleast another 5-10 years.
A way they could potentially get around this is have any new bestial races (like Lupin for example) use the same body style, but have separate head models for male/female.
I think people would be generally speaking totally fine with male viera/female hrotgar/any hypothetical new races using the exact same body as another, with different animations and maybe different heads, I really dont think that they should make na entirely new body ofr each race they add as to me it feels relaly unnecesary, for example they gave one to maleh rotgar that turns into a normal male roe body as soon as they wear various gear items, so I bet it would be easier to have just made them be exactly like male roes but with different animations (and also no hunched back was needed) instead of developing a new body just for them
Just checking in again and happy to see the thread is still active. I support both additions of Male Viera playable character & Female Hroth.
What he said then and what is the situation now can change. They intend for the game to last quite some time, so I think Melichoir is right about what they say and more than that, they've indicated they're actively looking into it here.
I Won't lie, i only started playing the year that shadowbringers came out and was grinding like mad to be ready for it's release but i was still bummed when the Bunnies where gender locked, it was pretty funny i was praising this mmo to the moons for not gender locking races (i was told during praising FFXIV that miqote use to be female only too) and then when i was super excited to play as a bunny boy this slapped me in the face, It wasn't the end of the world mind you, i just played as a Female Bun-Bun for about 3 months before switching and giving Hyur a go and then back to Mi'qo :) I'm still crossing my fingers for the day that Male Viera comes out but it won't stop me playing the game if it never happens... although i'll always be going "Wheres my bun bun" *Sadface* xD
To be honest i would be down for the Male Viera to be shorter than the Females, i like the idea of being reverse to Au'Ra, which was another weird little nitpick for me xD if Au'Ra Males could be shorter and have the cute lil horns the females had maybe i would of played as those up to Vieras Release but that's a different little blah blah for me to go on about :p
If they came out during Endwalker or even later on in the games lifespan i will 100% be buying a Fantasia and swapping over permanently :) but for now i will just have to be a weird kitty boy who's ears look like a Filling-less Wrap :') hehe
I'd prefer male viera to be equally as tall as their female counterparts or a little taller. A height slider could allow for them to be shorter than the women if need be as a compromise, but I'd rather not see them designed that way as a default stance.
I was hoping they would add Feol Viera as another clan just like the other races have 2 separate clans. Example being Moon Miqo'te and Seekers of the Sun. Anyways, if they do continue to add new races hopefully it's not like this again. And if they do they might as well go ahead and complete the beast trio. We have Bunny, Cat and now we just need Fox/Wolf. Lupin being that.
Hrothgar are among the least played race/gender combinations present in the game at the moment. I don't see that changing drastically anytime soon. Especially since many of those pushing for them to be added do so not because they want to play one themselves but because they've convinced themselves that it'd be 'interesting' to see them as a playable race. Even Yoshi-P is guilty of that. He really wanted to see a beast race made playable, yet he plays a female lalafell.
I'd sooner see enhanced character customisation for the playable races we have already, but if they do add another in the future...then hopefully it'll be something conventionally attractive as to be worth the extra work it'll take to make emotes, mounts and glamour fit.
They pretty much did with the Veena, Feol were never shorter than Viera, just more pale with shorter ears.
But the Feol are also extinct and were all sisters from the same mother and father, leaving 0 room to ever add males. (barring a retcon, of course.)
Some of the pre-generated Veena names are even Feol names and locations from Revenant Wings so SE probably figures they're close enough as well.
Just because they aren't super popular and bloody everywhere doesn't mean that people dont want them or like them. YoshiP not suddenly switching his Main to a Hrothgar does not reflect anything about his stance on Hrothgar. We needed something like the Hrothgar for Variety, we got them for Variety. If you haven't noticed, every option till now has been...basically a Human. We got Traditional Elves, then Some humans with Cat ears and tails, some with Horns and Scales, and then the Viera; just Humans with weird feet (If you keep the racial Gear) and Bunny Ears. Not a whole lot of Variety.
Even Guild Wars had something like the Asura, a Non-human Option, and then the Sylvari, who look like humans, but are Tree People with Customization option to reflect it such as Leaves for Hair.
I dont know how it is over there on Cerberus, but over here on Adamantoise we have quite alot of Hrothgar players, and I see quite alot of them in Dungeons and Trials when I play the game.
If we do get more races, I hope they push for bringing in other popular races, I hope to See the Bangaa. Another Short option like the Ivalician Moogles. Update and give us the Lupin, just to name a few.
We dont need another conventionally attractive race. Literally, just if they can, they should just make more customization options for the Previous Humanoid Races.
As long as there is a fanbase for it, its not a waste of time. A small Community, is still a community worth catering to. And that community is still more money.
Honestly I do hope they do an engine swap. Since they were talking about it before.
