Agreed, I don't think you can really over-state the potential benefits fresher visuals could yield. Yes, they come at a cost, but the game is something like 10 years old now, and it's beginning to look and feel dated, even in comparison to other MMOs - several of which have been sprucing up their visuals. With that said, it depends on whether they're going to bite the bullet and engage in the high res texture asset conversion, which they had said in the past would e.g. entail a reduction in gear output. Given that we've seen cuts in some of the more graphically intense content during the course of SHB, e.g. reductions in dungeons, I do wonder if this might be what they're doing behind the scenes.

While updated customization/visuals and male Viera and female Hrothgar would definitely be good for the game in general and I hope they do either or both, I don't see why the future success of the game hinges on these things.

ShB was by all accounts very successful and well received despite being light on customization and introducing the 2 most limited races in the game, who got shouted down at almost every turn when they dared to open their mouths about the limitations.

WoW did some really cool things with their CC recently, but we also have to remember they were literally dragging it into modern times from the stone ages. Even after the revamp in 2014-ish all the way up until Shadowlands pre-patch you couldn't even do something as basic as choose your own eye colour, every feature was tied to the face you picked and couldn't be customized.

Allied races are a nice feature but also incredibly hit & miss, Nightborne especially. I believe they're going on year 4 of having only 6 hairstyles and 3 skin colors now?

This is not to crap on WoW and defend XIV at all because I have plenty of complaints myself and XIV's CC and textures are starting to show their age and could definitely see a ton of improvements, but it's really not that bad to the point it harms the game I think? Hrothgar hair-to-face fiasco excluded of course, that's a whole mess.

Compared to something like BDO it's pretty terrible sure, but it's never gonna be that.

Success is a relative and goal-specific term. For example, do they want to maintain current sub levels, or keep increasing them, or what? Regardless of what you take it to mean, it will depend on what the marketplace looks like a few years forward. Right now it's hard to fathom another MMO (or even quasi-MMO) unseating it, and the game is successful enough to draw in a steady, safe flow of profit for SE. If they want the game to continue pulling in more subs, or even maintain current levels, that's something that may require sprucing up the visuals in the face of competition and I think this factor will weigh more heavily as the game continues to age and alternatives begin to appear.

i‘m hyped for 16, but i wouldn‘t want to see 14 suffer because the focus was mainly on 16. with yoshida being the producer for 16, im pretty sure he brought in some developers from 14.

i know i might be just looking too much into this, but ff16 being in development and 5.0‘being a bit lighter in content gave me reasons to be a little concerned.

They might want to increase sub numbers, but would they actually increase with improved textures or CC? How about after fixing the glamour system or housing? And how much would it cost to do these things vs. how much much it benefits them?

As much as we may hate it they might figure people are still buying the expansions and subbing despite them remaining rather rigid on these issues, so why throw a bunch of money at fixing them for questionable gain?

I also really hope they're looking into these things (I hope they're already working on them, actually) but sometimes it feels like they're intent on riding this game until the wheels fall off before they'd make drastic/expensive changes.

I suppose it all ties back to the feeling of whether or not the game is getting the resources it needs/deserves, but only they know that for sure.

I used to think customization and visuals were key to the health of a game, too. Runescape really did prove me wrong so I happily don my clown shoes about that. Also, new races and visuals were never the reason for a huge jump in subs on WoW. It was ALWAYS classes.

If someone is shopping for an mmo, what is going to be the one thing they look at first? It's going to be how their interact with the world. Visuals and cool races are important, but if you just do not get excited about any of the jobs FF has to offer, then why would you start? Just being a cat girl is not enough for most people. Like me! I only gave FF a shot because I saw astrologian in the HW promo and was in love.

New players are going to be content with things as they are cosmetically. The longer you play, the more you want some variety and sprucing up of your game of choice. Adding new customization is for player retention, not getting new subs.

Wrong. Both of their major graphic/CC updates happened in WoD and Shadowlands, expansions that didn't introduce new classes or races.

That said, you're also right, cosmetics and visual quality attracts people at a glance, gameplay and content makes them keep playing. Using WoW as an example again, even though WoD updated all playable character models, BfA introduced 10 "new" races, and Shadowlands made a major overhaul to the CC, the gameplay on the former 2 was simply poop and couldn't retain players past the first few months [Shadowlands is way too new to say if it's a flop or not yet] and even then, it could very well vary on the person

The very first time I played I didn't find even Roes that attractive, and pretty much fell asleep leveling in Gridania, didn't even reach lv 15 [this was probably 1.0 or somewhere in 2.0] ...but then like 3 years ago the bf wanted to try and I begrudgingly agreed and would you look at that, I actually got engaged to the game this time, the story, the cinematic, the characters, AST and RDM were now added, and my enjoyment only increased when Hrothgar and DNC were added in ShB.

WoD didn't see any significant increase in subs, it actually bled them, and Shadowlands is still an open study at the moment. You know which expansion did see significantly more new subs? Legion. Demon Hunters printed money, the same way DKs did back in Wrath.

I'm not entirely sure how FFXIV is doing on retaining ShB subs, but covid has been very good for mmo populations.

Back on topic: I'm hesitant to say we'll see any significant features added in 6.0. Maybe 6.1? If m viera and f hrothgar are on the table then I think the canary in the coalmine would be to see them roll out major customization updates for the races we have. It will mean they are putting resources into player models, which would make me hopeful that they are getting closer to the top of the "to-do" list.

IMO, if they do add male Viera they should be shorter than female Viera, a sort of inverse of the sexual dimorphism in Au Ra.

WoD saw a substantial increase in subs, it just happened to pummel harder than a rock in water after the first quarter because the expansion as a whole was barren of content aside from raiding and looking prettier, whereas Legion, aside from getting a new class, did several positive changes and adjustments to the game itself, which is why I said you're right, looks alone won't keep people playing after the first impression, but that's not to say they don't matter at all either. But yeah, tomayto tomahto

I don't have exact numbers but I'm fairly certain if Hroth and Viera didn't had their limitations, their player count would be considerably higher, since the hat issue is the main reason most people seem to give for switching back to their previous race. If the other genders aren't added, I hope at the very least they address the hairstyles issues and add more - it's been a year and a half and we haven't seen as much as concept art.

That is false, WoD launch saw an increase of about 3M subs - subs that very quickly were lost back, mind you, but that probably wasn't in relation to the graphics.

I should have repeated new subs. The bulk of the subs coming in for WoD were returning players who were put off from MoP's theme. The number of brand new accounts that were created for WoD were much smaller than other expansions. Even BfA that had a leap in active subs saw fewer newly created accounts. As my argument was new classes, rather than graphics, are what draw in brand new players.

They're not mutually exclusive propositions, and they're things which different teams work on. They've said many times that their constraints aren't so much actual money (in that they're not short of it), as it is labour, and implementing the high res texture conversion has been described by them as a rather time-consuming task. For a game with more "realistic" graphics like this, I do think the graphics will become a liability later down the line. Their art team lead even came out and said the one thing she would really like is a better graphics engine. A total overhaul is probably too costly, but it's not just us players who would like it.

Now if they're satisfied with a certain amount of subs, either where we currently are or a bit below this even, where they can break even without much more effort, then perhaps such changes won't be necessary, but it'd be a damn shame. So I'm in broad agreement with Yencat on this point, it does come down to a cost/benefit calculation, and I don't think they'll necessarily feel much of a pinch unless a strong competitor emerges. Which is why I put my point forward the way I did.

I tend to rate the game on multiple dimensions, and graphics/CC certainly are one of those. I wouldn't jump to another MMO simply because it looked better, but if it had good gameplay and better visuals, there's little holding me to this one. I find the story to be just about okay, and not too impressed with several aspects of 5.1-5.4, so it's not something I'm very drawn to these days. It does need meatier/more durable challenge content that perhaps falls intermediate between casual content and savage/ultimate raiding, as well. As an example, TESO is a game where I just don't like the visual style, and try as I may, it puts me off playing it. So I don't see it as either/or, as both matter to me.

XIV was currently at around 900k on the last Luckybancho survey, down from 1,2m on the prior one taken in August. There may have been another in between and I don't keep track of when there is a free trial or not, so unsure how that all affected it. I believe the breakdown of the newer ones shows they're able to attract newer players for a while (and it states it's difficult to determine to what extent it's due to the free trials), it's more subs between surveys they're showing a decline in, so continuing/returning subs where it's flagging a bit.

Hey, if one race has to suffer a big sexual dimorphism with women being the shorter ones, so should another race with with men being the shorter ones. It's fair. Yes, as an Auri woman player I'm vindictive.

I don't think two wrongs make a right is a good design philosophy.

You have every right to be vindictive. I'm in the crowd that wishes female Au Ra weren't so small in stature (the height difference makes me rather uncomfortable honestly), and they resembled more how they did in the concept art. A few years back I remember the devs hinting about a potential 3rd race of Au Ra, which would be a perfect opportunity to give us tall Au Ra ladies.

That being said, I do not want there to be a reverse Au Ra situation with Viera, please. If anything make it an option to be shorter if people wish.

All the other races have smaller females aniway. Getting the same thing all the time juste makes it more boring. It doesnt have to be extreme tho.

As much as I wish that Raen and Xaela of both genders were closer to what they were depicted as in the original concept art, I'm pretty happy with how the men look overall. I would prefer not to see a reverse situation for male viera just for the sake of having one.

Hrothgar men are designed to be very niche. They're among the least played options for male characters. If Hrothgar women are added, I think it's fair to suggest that they'll also be very niche - because they're not likely to be conventionally attractive.

Female Viera are conventionally attractive and even accounting for the limitations of being unable to have many hairstyle or headgear they're a rather common sight and popular pick among players. I'd prefer not to see male Viera also be designed in a very niche manner. I'd prefer for them to be conventionally attractive in a similar vein to the likes of Midlander and Raen/Xaela men.

A solid compromise would be a rather extensive height slider, though even then...Yoshi-P has already ruled out a child-like design for Viera men.

Au Ra males have a pretty good design, some odd choices here and there but when I picked up my Mateus alt I noticed they're very well built, and not just in the "muscular" department. Their heads are well crafted, their racial hairstyles are pretty good; the narrow waist is an odd choice, but the majority of chest pieces give it a more "athletic" build than "hourglass" figure. Their stance is powerful and imposing, although I remember their emotes being kinda goofy, their run animation looks pretty good.

Honestly, for all that Viera are "Elezen done right" I would love if Male Au Ra were used as a base for Male Viera. They certainly fit the "feral warrior fending for himself" theme. Not that I'd complain if they were slimmer with a "male model/bishonen" aesthetic, really; it depends on how well they fit the "theme."

Frankly, I just want Au Ra to have the sexual dimorphism retconed. Let me be a tall lizard girl! (sorry for going briefly off topic). Of course, the main reason that I think male Viera should be shorter is because female Viera are considered more dominant.

I still like Midlander men a lot but it's very frustrating seeing the cinematic Warrior of Darkness sporting stubble that isn't available to player characters. Furthermore, I like playing tall characters. I also think Raen/Xaela men generally look good in armour and they can be designed to be quite handsome. The scales, tail and horns can take a bit of getting used to but to me they're unique enough to be inhuman without being too far out there.

I guess my ideal choice would be to have the option to play a character that looks like Snow, Basch or Gladio but I don't see that happening anytime soon since although Highlander men have the physique for that, the faces leave a lot to be desired. Not to mention the lack of eyebrows...

Tell me about it! Even though midlander men can, apparently, reach 6 foot at max height, I'd still rather have them just a bit taller. Not only that they suffer from probably the worst same face syndrome in the game, and that probably is in no small part due to how most of their face options just look.. weird. Plus don't even get me started on the hairstyles, and yeah - the stubble. I like my males to be handsome, and masculine. This game simply doesn't offer that.

Au Ra males on the other hand, are probably the one male I think looks nice. Though, I don't like their hourglass shape myself. Their animations also seem kind of goofy to me. HATE the clipping though. If I was to play a male - on my alt - I like my males to wear helmets, or headgear in general (masks, etc.) the large horns, just don't do it for me. This is why bunny boys would just never work for me. No matter how they did it. I'd prefer improved customization for hyurs (midlanders), myself.

They're only more "dominant" in the sense that they have control over the settlements, while the males are more or less solitary (I say this because they've got a mentor system) protectors and hunters, whose sole interaction with the settlements is to return, breed and collect their mentees when they come of age. This is a very typically male sex role, in fact it is one taken to an extreme. Also, mooncats have a similarly matriarchal system, but it doesn't mean the women will be physically larger. Just that they have positions of authority in their society.

Personally I agree with you about female Au Ra, but I don't think taking a "vindictive" approach here is going to resolve anything other than annoy many of us who don't want male Viera to be the victims of that. My view is they should've given female Au Ra a bigger height range, like female Roegadyn, because SE clearly is happy with the money the tiny waifus made them. However, I loathe their shrimpy look, personally, and I think it looks stupid next to the males, and doesn't fit either the Raen or the Xaela, as both have martial traditions, where the women were also expected to fight. They both evolved in the harsh conditions of the Steppes and Raen retained their martial tradition even as they spread throughout Othard. A height range to something like a female Highlander or Elezen would've been nice.

I've suggested in the past that what they can do for male Viera is just that - put in a height slider that goes below the females min height but reaches around the max height of a male Elezen, and also add in a muscle tone slider. Whatever the coding challenges of it, it's high time we saw races besides Hyur and Roegadyn get muscle tone sliders. I suspect they're going to do what they did with female Viera and take it as their chance to "correct" the awkwardness of the Elezen body type by providing a substitute option.

Frankly, even though Midlanders are my go-to, I wish you could make them buffer, sort of like monk derplander. This game lacks the tech for it, and it would no doubt be very expensive to implement, but it does show the appeal of adding the capability for many body types or body type sliders... and fixing those damn invisible nipples.

I'd agree and I would consider Au Ra to be an even better base for them, but it depends on whether they want to take a similar approach to what they did with the females, or not. I think Au Ra men probably have the best facial design of any male race in the game. I'd have liked the option to take them a bit buffer yet, but that goes back to the whole issue of body sliders!

I think tiny buff bunny boys would be very cool, actually. We've never seen a male viera, and they could pull anything they want and it would work.

To be honest SE probs wants to make as much money from male viera as possible due to them being very expensive to make ,so I'd say theyre gonna be extremely handsome and fan servicy

I am of the opinion that two wrongs dont make 1 right, if anything, if they ever were to update character creation overall (which I find very unlikely for 6.0, maybe for 7-8.0 its more likely together with a full graphical update) female au ra could get a good height slider that allow them to be way taller

And those poor Elezen could get neck surgery, and leg surgery to fix their sprint. Maybe head enlargement, too.

Elezen deserve to get a rework to their necks so badly imo, I hope if they do update the games graphics at some point it is one of the things they change

They've said they were reluctant to before, because it may upset existing players of the race, but I can't think of many people who'd say no to improvements to it.

I’ve been excited for and wanting Viera(especially male) since the idea of them came up as a potential race for HW. I am still holding out hope for them one day.

Don't want to spam the thread with pictures but if you Google "Au Ra concept art" a lot more show up, Au Ra went on quite a journey before they ended up as they are.
