I doubt they'll help. Always not their fault. Always bank's fault. WoW and all other American games with subs or buying things -never- have this issue. But Mogstation and various lightly used (Because of failures) non-US area online stores always do have this issue.
SE is lucky Paypal and Crysta still work... I like this game... but if that avenue is lost well good bye.

Using Ghostery? Pause blocking, don't just whitelist.
I have chrome so noscript isn't a thing so I instead use "ScritBlock" which you will want to "allow scripts globally"
What happens basically has the gloabalcollect in it's own sub-webpage frame that loads up separately from the rest of the page, so the blockers still attack it but don't always notify you that they're stopping certain actions/scripts.
#1 way to know if its your end or theirs. After pressing submit on your payment info do you immediately see it processing (with the little animiated globalcollect symbol) or does it go straight to 401/601? If its skipping that processing step it generall means it didn't get to process so it auto-blocks the transaction.
I was dumb and kept re-trying my card 5 times and kept getting the Error 406 message. (After my monthly sub payment didn't go through) does anyone know if and how long my account will be locked from this? Really annoying especially during Early Access
Last weekend, I've received issues of Error 401 as well. I've waited a while and tried again, repeating the process, but it still didn't work. So I tried using a different card for method of payment. Didn't work as well. I'm unable to purchase anything from the Mogstation, I can't purchase Crysta, I'm also unable to purchase anything from the Square Enix Online Store as well. Getting really disappointed with this.
I've bought fantasia potions from the mog station as recently as 5 or 6 days ago using my visa debit card, that same card was used for my last subscription to the game and the info was saved for recurring billing (meaning all my card details are correct, no user error there). I have over 80 dollars in the account too. Adblock is disabled, as well as any other browser extensions, I have tried on Chrome and Firefox. I tried using the card to purchase cheap dlc for a game on steam and it worked. Yet when I go to purchase anything on the mog station now or try to update my card info (my subscription auto renew didn't work either so now I'm unable to play the game) it gives me error 401 and error 601. (401 when trying to buy fantasia potions and 601 when trying to update card details for subscription.) I had this problem yesterday, waited 24 hours and it's still here today. I don't understand what the problem could be, all things indicate its a problem on square enix's end but I've seen no evidence online that anyone else is experiencing the same issue as recently as me.

Well I'm lucky it turned out to just be ad-block affecting me today but aren't they supposed to have paypal by now? I know a lot of people rely on other methods of payment than credit cards and/or have more complicated error issues with mogstation. It's really appalling how long this has been happening with no response or solution.
After 15 months of paying with my credit card, no problem, suddenly I get told my sub was canceled because an error occurred. This is weird because nothing has changed with my credit card, and I use it all the time elsewhere, and I've never missed a payment or anything. I went in to re-enter the credit card info, and was told an "Error 601" occurred. I tried to get support, but SE's support system is terrible. After waiting on hold in chat for several hours, I decided to go looking for what was wrong and found this thread.
Nice to know the official response is, "You must have done something wrong, it certainly isn't our fault." Amazing, that customer service.
Even though I hate Paypal for all sorts of reasons, I bought some crysta via paypal and used that to renew my sub. Of course, I forgot about my inventory rental fee, and had to try to pay that afterward. But, you can't add less than $5 of Crysta. Sounds like a scam to me... So, now SE is holding $3 of my money hostage. It's not like $3 is a lot or anything, but it's the principle of the matter. When I can pay no problem via their system that favors them, but I can't pay via other methods for mysterious reasons, that definitely raises some flags. If this happens again, I guess I'll just report it to the BBB (not that that does anything either) =\
Lucky for players in countries that SE will sell Crysta to.
For those of us that do not have that option... suddenly one day your subscription goes BOOM and all of the items held inside our retainers are suddenly held hostage... with no means of getting them back until the accounting department decides to get done with 'investigating'.
Business that does not want to earn money is a bad business.
same thing happened to me today, i bought some games over the internet everything went smoothly but now this, i am paying with this card since 2011 with no problem at all, everything is correct, i have money on it, other sites were no problem, and today i wanted to buy fantasia and error 401, i tried digital collectors edition again with an error 401, i bought a fantasia 3 days ago with no problem and 2 days ago i renewed my subscription, but today this, i have no idea , i hope they will fix this asap, it isn't on my side nor banks side given the fact i bought something else with no problem. will this problem pass on itself? how is everyone paying now? did they fix it for you or did it fix itself?
I haven't been able to subscribe back, I am not going to get a FFXIV ultimate card due to I only want to pay the subscription of 15 bucks a month.
Since I cannot subscribe back, I decided to go back to WoW my visa works there no problem, I called SE they couldn't help me and my bank says they are not blocking them, I have all correct information.
Maybe down the road I might come back, I really did wanna keep playing but if square enix isn't going fix this issue I have no choice.
on a side note, I tried to buy crysta and same issue, I double checked information everything, even had my cousin look at it and no such luck, cousin said basically to go get a mastercard I might end up doing this but I don't know, I shouldn't have to.
Random question - does everyone who has this problem use a Visa credit card? Just wondering, because I used to (before being forced to switch to paypal/crysta by this bug). If so, it could be an issue with their checksum algorithm or something... Or maybe their billing servers are allergic to Visa?
yes i use visa card. sadly crysta is not an option for me cause it is not allowed where i am from nor do we have a paypal, and game time cards not an option as well, cause i am a legacy player so it would cost me a lot more. i contacted support they replied and i sent them some details, waiting for an answer. will update if everything is solved.
I have two cards that we USED to use for FFXIV. One a Visa, One a Mastercard. Neither are accepted. I have to go through Crysta and Paypal to continue playing.
I'm annoyed with their system and their customer support. They always claim my banks are the issue. My banks claim otherwise.
UPDATE > they fixed the issue, you just need to be patient, after 6 days they sent me an e-mail saying they fixed the issue with my card and i bought today collector's edition with no problem. you just need to write a mail to the support and send them what ever details and photos they require and they will fix it.
On the 5th my payment failed, which is odd because I know the account had money.
This morning I got off work and decided to try using my other visa(A debit card). It failed 3 times, I now have 3 pending 1.00 charges on my visa debit card.
I wanted to play but I guess I won't be playing for several days. I guess that's fine, hopefully by the time I can play MCH will be seeing some buffs.
I compiled a list of solutions people have had to these errors below and read up on what other people in this thread said about the problem. Basically, it sounds like when it starts happening, trying another card doesn't work. Trying the same card again generally doesn't work, but might if your problem had to do with adblock or the card number format. However, once you get the $1 charge, until that clears, trying again will just add another $1 charge and reset the timer.
Basically, SE suddenly decides for whatever reason that they need to verify your card (even if you've been using that same card for months or even years) and sends a $1 test charge to the credit card company. They then fail any attempt to use that card until they process that $1 test charge. However, they do not pick up the $1 test charge for about five days. Attempting to use the card again (or any other card) triggers the same $1 test charge and subsequent failure, effectively resetting the ~five day timer. The only way to resolve that particular cause of this error is to wait until SE picks up the charges before trying again.
Also, if you try more than a certain number of times, in addition to the five day wait, your account gets locked for thirty days while they investigate why you had so many failed charges.
If you want to play in the interim, if Crysta is available to you, that might be the only way. Contacting customer service generally doesn't work from the experiences of people here. One person says it did work for them, but that it took six days for Customer Service to get back to them, so the actual solution might have waiting the five days that has worked for others, and Customer Service didn't actually do anything additional for them. I don't see any evidence that SE sees this as a bug in their system - their customer service seem to generally give the response that the issue is on our end, or the banks' end. But, contacting Customer Service can tell you if your account is locked for 30 days or not due to them denying too many of your payment attempts.
Solution compilation:
Solution that helped me today: forget about the credit card payment at Mogstation. That system rots. Try google Game Time Cards at Square Enix EU/NA store depending where u r, and you will find that there is actually a two month subscription Game Time Card costing not more than the normal price. Log in and pay and u will get instantly a 20 digits code. Log in Mogstation again input the code. Bang! It works. I feel it like a quest itself in the game. You receive all the items for veterens as well. Good luck!
I'm sure that would work. But how about if I wanna rent extra retailers? Besides, they should really fix this error 601 problem because this is causing their customers a lot more inconvenience.
Just a note for everyone who experience error 601, the credit card subscription used to work. I had a 180 days subscription on another account. But now I'm overseas and have my PS4 with me and that's when the error 601 starts popping in. But 2 days ago I used the same credit card and successfully made a world transfer. So I suppose it is still usable in a way?
I am getting Error 401 even after successfully paying over 100 euro the same day. I just want to change name for 7 Euro but Square Enix doesn't want the extra 7 euro?

A friend of mine is having problems renewing their subscription, they have tried paying via Debit Card, Gift Card and Crysta but none work, they have shown me their current bank balance which has plenty in, unfortunately because their subscription has ran out they can't post on the forums, please advise or assist?!?!

Same problem for me, i was able to pay until August 2015, then i got error 401 .
But before, i got no troubles with my American Express Card, i could pay for a transfer and name change without problems, i don't understand .
I tried 4 credit Cards, but i still had Error 401 ...
I tried to make the payment on others Browsers and from another connexion but it didn't work .
Had the issue today after trying to add my new debit card, I ended up using crysta > Paypal which worked fine. So if you don't want to wait like me just do the Crysta > Paypal method.
