I agree that both the Viera and Hrothgar/Ronso shouldn't be gender locked, sadly I didn't play the game during the time Roe's and Miqo's were gender locked but I can understand how players would react if they couldn't play the opposite sex. To use the race lore as some form of excuse to not make the opposite sex is downright wrong - they should know better to repeat the same mistake or else they'll end up with angry players from 1.0 and up. If Square knew making two new races would take a lot of time and resources (along with two new classes) then what they could have done is just work on one race with both sexes, that way they have more time on fitting the gear for it AND have time to work on the two classes. Actually now that I think about it, what Square could have also done is make the Garleans as a playable race, and yes I know that seems pointless and I'm sure others will say "No that's not possible because of the story/lore or they are the bad guys ". But I think that would have been in my opinion a better option for 5.0. I mean if you really think about it the devs could use the Hyur's models and just alter it so it can be a Garlean - it won't take much time nor resources to make sure the gear fits them (that and make some hairstyles as well). I just wanted to put my two cents in but also think that the devs should remove the gender lock for Viera and Hrothgar race.

Agreed, if Yoshida's fixation with hrothgar was that strong then hey you do you Yoshida. I think most people would respect a decision like that to this half assed measure.

One of their 1.0 "lessons learned" statements was:

• Do not approach projects as something you can always patch later

If I remember correctly that approach to "we can always patch this bad decision later" was what created the world of warcraft exodus. People get fed up.

The lore is not what is stopping people from being able to play the unplayable genders. The lore is used as an in-game explanation. We don't have them because the devs made a conscious decision to release two limited races because people wanted viera and they wanted a beast race, and there was only dev resources for one. Looking back at it now, I'm sure that it must have come up in some meeting somewhere that there's negative reaction due to this, but they can't go back and change it now and delete one of them for the sake of a completed other.

Garleans are a different story that would be way too complex to introduce. First off, Garleans the main bad guys that everyone in every single place we go to is either scared of or wants to kill. It would take a lot of willing disbelief to allow a WoL Garlean to be OK to everyone, especially before you become the WoL. Secondly, in the lore they have no capability to use aether at all, and every single class in the game from machinists to mages to culinarians use aether. Though this is just background lore and can be rewritten, it is much more hardcoded into the game than viera or hrothgar lore and the fact they can't use aether is ultimately responsible for a lot of what happens in the story and why they are the way they are. Thirdly, there is no Garlean race according to the game models. Except for notable exceptions, who in-universe are notable exceptions, pure-blooded Garleans in-game are either elezen or midlander hyur bodies with a unique face if they're important, or an existing face with a 3rd eye slapped on if they're not. A new Garlean race would fix the disconnect between Garlean body shapes and sizes being all over the place, but I don't see them going back and changing that. And lastly, there is nothing to be gained from having a Garlean race. Unless you RP, there is no difference except they can't use aether and they have a 3rd eye. Not really worth a whole race addition.

First post on the forums but I really wanted to pledge my support! I started playing FFXIV during last year's starlight celebration and fell in love with the game! I played a Lalafell for the majority of my time and more recently switched to Miqo'te. Though, if there had been a male Viera option I would have pounced at the opportunity to fantasia into one of them instead! Quite a few members of my FC who play as Miqo'te or Au'ra males have also expressed wanting to play as male Viera. Fingers forever crossed that we might see them one day in the future, however far off it may be!

one thing I noticed in a lot of fan art is male viera have human faces. Ideally I'd like them to have the slightly upturned noses and "overbite" that the females have.

Not only do I wanna see a male viera but I want to see him tip broad-brimmed hat he wears on his head as well.

On the bright side, it's good they didn't 'sacrifice' male Viera and went for another race altogether to fill the furry quota, I guess even they know the 'monster male sexy female' trope isn't exactly welcomed.

I'm pretty sure the upturned noses and overbites is just an art style thing for Final Fantasy characters in general. Hyurs already have similar features and people and real life do have up turned noses and overbites.

It's all about them options! I'd like the classic long, straight nose as well as some mildly convex options - both of which are traits that factor into the typically attractive male. I don't mind the upturned nose as an option but if it's the only thing, that'd suck.

It's more pronounced in the Viera and purposefully so. The nose and the highlights on the nose draw attention to it. It's a subtle but noticeable difference.

The women already have options for straighter, more conventionally attractive "human" noses. I see no reason the men couldn't too!

Just copy what you already see in female Viera, many options, for those who like wide noses better or straighter better. The problem this thread gets into is people continue to talk appearance so it starts getting into deeply personally held beliefs. Just focus on the support of the race, leave the look to Matsuno.

I'm not denying that vieras have special noses but upturned isn't a unique thing for them. If anything they have rounder nose tips than most of the characters. That highlight on their nose is unique to them compared to the rest of the characters in the game, but I'm not denying that either. I'm merely stating that having your nose upturned is a natural and also a stylistic choice in many media that transcends just Final Fantasy. Most characters in FF12 had upturned noses while in the newer games it is far less prominent like in Final Fantasy 13 and 15. Even characters in Xenoblade Chronicles had upturned noses. It's just a reoccurring thing in games that have anime inspired art styles.

I was never saying it was unique to them, I was saying it was an obvious design choice to make them look more leporine than they might otherwise.

You are one to talk, in my opinion. Weren't you the one pushing your preferred look for several pages, several pages ago? Maybe I'm remembering wrong.

Things like men from the jungle are really muscular, tall, etc.? Must have been someone else. Had to be.

You are right. I have posted since day 1 I couldn't care less if they added male viera. This is more of a chat thread than anything else. I was glad when I thought they deleted the thread (hid it?), I had been calling for this thread's deletion since like, well at this point hundreds of pages ago.

I just think it is odd, that you, who were so adamant pages ago, are now flipping the argument. Maybe it wasn't you though.

It's baffling that people see a thread with over 1800 likes and 1250 pages and pretend as though there's only a small amount of interest in what is being requested.

The echo chamber comments are tiresome, too, since anyone who bothers to even glance at the thread to any degree would see that although many of us want to see male viera added to the game this thread is the opposite of an echo chamber as the desire for what they should look like varies quite a bit.

When the thread disappeared I figure a good portion of the missing genders supporters decided to stop the circular arguments and just... support their inclusion in the first place. Let Yoshi-P and Matsuno worry about Lore excuses and how they will look like, we just want them in the game.

What if the last batches of Black rose exist in the Golmore jungle and one of Garlemald's viceroys set their eyes on it? That would be a great excuse for male Viera to consider taking the fight to the Garleans for breaking their deal about leaving Golmore alone. Furthermore, Garlemald would want to retake Doma and what better route than the one through Golmore Jungle-Nagxia? Remember, we closed their airship route with the Seiryu wall.

I don't think we need to put too much thought into why the men would appear. I mean it's fun to speculate on, by all means folks should go ahead and do it for fun but convincing lore shouldn't be the ultimate reason we see them.

Granted I am saying this because I main a male Moon Keeper; a very rare gender in a rare people who lorewise keep to themselves. And yet male Keepers (and Seekers for that matter) are playable. The WoL doesn't represent the general population.

Low overall player count (due to being new) but high active player count. In fact, there are more active Viera players (around 59k) a year from their release than there were female Auri a year from their release (around 33k). Au Ra today have a higher active player count, but they have been out for longer. More people play Viera than you think.

Hrothgar even have a higher active player count (around 20k) than male Roegadyn (around 12k), despite being new and still one of the less popular player races.

opinions differ on this matter. it isn‘t content for you, that doesn‘t automatically mean it isn‘t for others - people need to understand and respect that.
customizability is a big selling point for devs, otherwise they would‘t use much of their sweat and blood for it. it is rather difficult for them to implement new races, but it seems to rather sell well as „content“.
tl;dr: new races/customizability seem to be a big selling point for expansions..

Playable races are absolutely a form of 'content'. They're even advertised pretty heavily as a new feature in an expansion whenever they're added to a game.

If one wants to get technical, races are the longest lasting content in the game: raids, trials, and dungeons get phased out in (pre-covid times) a matter of 3 months. Even relics, some of the longest-lasting content, only get to their final stages in x.5 patches, and then they're only relevant until the next expansion.

Races, on the other hand, can be played with for all the game's life-cycle. "Glamour is the true endgame" is a meme for a reason.

They're also a pretty great way to renew interest in a game that is ongoing. World of Warcraft is still adding new playable races and expanding character customisation and that game has been around for...sixteen years. It's why I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll see both the missing genders and additional customisation options added in the future. It's just something that has a very successful track record.

Given the fact that the lvl70 24man raids and now the 5.x relic weapons are all tied to Ivalice in one manner or another I doubt it was threads on the OF that made Viera playable. They're one of the most popular and iconic FF races, especially when it comes to humanoids.

Especially when you get one or two threads a week by a Hrothgar or Viera player asking for hats/hair rather than having 1 thread for it like we do. Wasn't until this thread got deleted that we got a few others popping up.

Absolutely. I got into WoW for the first time earlier this year because of Vulpera; didn't like any of the character creation options prior to that. Now I resub every so often just for a change of pace. Races are definitely content.
