My guilty pleasure thread is back!
Oh it is back. Cool.
Happy to see it back.
Let us be civil this time around. We can have valid, and differing, opinions and still reach the same end goal: support for the inclusion of male viera. Yay
All the support in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ugh this post is back up
I'm all for them adding male Viera to the games as long as they look similar to the concept art they already have. Sleek, tall and muscular. Like a hunter/guardian that lives in the wild would look like.
Oh, and they should also add female Hrothgar at the same time.
the return of this topic means i can finally ask for my dream character
playable bangaa please
I'm actually really surprised this thread is back. I haven't seen anything like this happen before on this forum. Thank you forum mods.
I've shared some of these sources before, but I wanted to compile it into one post for people's viewing pleasure.
Interview with FFXIV producer Naoki Yoshida. I think the main thing holding back the dev team is work flow rather than lore.
"As a follow up, is the team considering adding the other gender for these two races in future expansions?"
A.) Short answer is we haven’t made a decision on that. The reason why we can’t say for sure. We need to optimize our work flow with the existing races and the new ones. After that, perhaps we do the other gender. But we don’t know right now. We did consider Male Viera instead of adding an extra race, but we tried to take player feedback on adding a more beast like race as well as the strong desire to receive Viera. We did expect strong feedback on the gender lock. It was a tough decision, but we decided to do our best to meet both the player feedback and our development team’s vision. It will be very costly to add a new race or genders. So I won’t say no, but I would not like to set expectations high."

Male viera & female hrothgar might not be entirely off the table. In fact, a new race might not be entirely off the table, either.
When asked about whether viera and hrothgar would be the last new races to be introduced to the game, and if there were any plans to add more customization options to the established races, Yoshi P responded like this:
"if it is a customization option that significantly changes the shape of the races body, I think we would be better off to tackle the challenge of just introducing a new playable race all together instead."

Naoki Yoshida talks about possible appearance for male viera.
"If we did create a male design for the Viera, he would be quite elegant, handsome, and slim. He would look more like the Elezen race, but with bunny ears."
Source: Link
"...we only had Female Viera for reference, so we had no idea what to do for the Male variant. We would have to use our own imagination for that. There was fear about how we would approach that. Perhaps an elezen body with a miqo’te face and bunny ears. "

Yasumi Matsuno, who oversaw the development of Final Fantasy Tactics, supervised the development for PlayOnline (for FFXI), and directed FFXII with Hiroyuki Ito, made some comments on the appearance of male viera. Viera make appearances in Final Fantasy Tactics and FFXII.
Rikishi Toru is a character from Ashita no Joe. Rikishi actually ends up dying after the rematch with Joe due to his extreme weight loss training. Matsuno describes male viera's physique as being like Rikishi after his extreme weight loss. Rikishi lost weight in order to be in bantamweight class to have a rematch with Joe. Bantam is the lowest weight class.
To give you a scale, I'll list all the weight classes:
-welter (66.678kg / 147lb or less)
-light (61.235kg / 135lb or less)
-feather (57.153kg / 126lb or less)
-bantam (53.524kg / 118lb or less)

Matsuno discusses the male viera appearance more here when he was requesting male viera artwork from illustrator Fumio Minagawa.
_____
Matsuno requested art of male viera from Fumio Minagawa (who also goes by Minafumi on twitter). Minafumi has made official illustrations and goods for Final Fantasy titles, like an art book for FFXI.
Minafumi took a crack at drawing male viera at Matsuno's request, and Matsuno replied with "GJ !!" (most likely meaning good job!!)

If you would like male viera to be added as a playable character, please remember to leave a like on the original post of this thread. If your friends would also like male viera, encourage them to leave a like as well.
Just noticed the tail on the concept art for the female viera... Now I'm sad.
They never had tails, but I wouldn't be opposed to some armor that give your character a rabbit tail. Like how the gold saucer outfit has a tail built into it.
If they added tails in character creator, I'm not sure I'd use it because of the clipping problems.
What fanfest are you all looking to as far as Male Viera confirmation/de-confirmation? I'm only gonna give it until the second fanfest. I think they've learned their lesson to not keep us waiting until the last fanfest to tell us whether or not we'll get male Viera or not. It tends to spill water all over the expansion itself as we head into the expansion release. Are you all really still hoping by the third?
Considering -if- they do an online fanfest, there would be no need to worry about the audience going ...a little rowdy, so it could as well be announced right away to build hype, and wouldn't surprise me the reveal is directly tied to the Bozja storyline.
Yeah they'd take the online vs offline deal into consideration, they could instantly let the rest of the fanfests not have the male Viera question hanging over their heads by de-confirming them right at the start.
But if they are going to add them I wonder if the first fanfest is the best one, they usually like to see us going crazy over the shirt he's wearing when it comes to something as big as a new race/missing gender.Do they usually announce the first new job at the first fanfest? I kinda forget. So it could be: new job, missing gender confirmation, new job.
So it's basically like I said, the second fanfest is the only hope for the missing genders. It kinda makes it better for us, in my opinion, to lose hope at the second fanfest. The third fanfest is usually a long wait, they seem to like to announce the last new job at the last one more than anything.
Out of all the places for us to go to, it would be disappointing to go directly into hrothgar land and only see male hrothgar. It would be the best, and really, the only place to reveal them like they did with female Viera in Return to Ivalice.
Reminder that Bozja was pretty much nuked by Dalamud. So I wouldn't be surprised for a lack of female Hrothgar being around.
I'll be tempering my expectations to a greater extent this time around. If the missing genders are added and/or we get enhanced character customisation? Great! If neither element is added then it'll just cement this game as something for me to play until a more promising MMO piques my curiosity.
I don't typically just flit between MMO's as they catch my attention. I see them as long term investments, so I don't invest in them lightly. I'm still enjoying FFXIV for the most part...though various factors as of Stormblood and beyond have definitely dampened my enthusiasm somewhat. Not enough to make me quit, but enough to reconsider my level of enthusiasm. Adding male viera would go a long way towards restoring my interest and faith in the game. I'm just not going to get overly excited about the possibility of it happening.
This is my take on the situation as well; the same way the World of warcraft exodus happened, I can see myself doing the same when it comes to XIV if the next expansion is just pure stagnation.
If we get a character creator upgrade in some form if we don't get the missing genders? Ok, that'll keep me around. But no missing gender and nothing to "replace" the fact that they're not working on missing genders? When it's a double negative like that it will make me consider diving right into PSO2 New Genesis. Big open world with a lot to do at end game, and upgraded graphics?
They can gamble not adding the missing genders but they better expect people to start asking "that's it? we're just getting 2 new jobs and the usual?" Stagnation is a very real thing; you can see this in other iterative products such as cellphones; people don't just want the same phone with a new name, they want new features, specially those that have been heavily requested.
I don't know about you all but Stormblood was the first "crack" when it comes to that stagnation that was becoming apparent. The fanfests for it were boring because it basically brought nothing new (save one or two minor things). This next expansion runs the same risk of making people lose interest. I'm one of those people don't actually mind if we don't get male Viera, I just don't like the idea that we wouldn't get more glamours, hairstyles, or more of something in its place.
i think male viera could fix male elezen like female viera fixed female elezen. decently proportioned head, no giraffe neck. just look at aymeric, they did that for him and then did not see fit to bestow these improvements to the lower-born plebian player elezen. sad!
furthermore i had a thought about a week ago; the thought being that they really go out of their way to introduce and expand upon viera culture...on Norvrandt. however, during one of the fanfests where they were describing the 1st, they go out of their way to explain how wildly divergent the cultures of the people on the 1st shifted from those on the source. please correct me if i'm wrong, but, do they ever expand upon viera culture on the source? they emphasize the split between the males and females in norvrandt, but, is this ever touched upon in the source?
Viis in the first have no culture.
Their culture is "ronka," which in truthfulness is a Ronso/hrothgar civilization.
As for Viera in the source? We haven't been there yet so all we know is both male Rava and Veena protect the jungle/forest and the females nurture it. Beyond that there's no lore to their culture within the jungle/forest. The hope is that they actually have some culture to them, unlike the Viis.
my insinuation was more that there was no established lore for the viera on the source so that there's no lore issues with male viera being made playable. maybe if we were on norvrandt, sure, but on the source?
It's probably going to be a rehash of Ivalice Viera lore
The Dramaturge on the airship in Kugane has had all the Source's viera lore since Stormblood and it's the same as Ivalice viera lore. He's also been to Dalmasca, which viera make up 5% of the population of the Kingdom, and has never seen a male viera.
We probably have more lore on Source viera than we do on the viis.Quote:
I saw all manner of wondrous creatures, not once did I lay mine eyes upon a male Viera, nor did I hear of one living in the city. They simply do not exist to us.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcCu5ZcZnoU
still i feel the lore justification is flimsy. they describe female viera following similar cultural traditions (reclusive, shunning contact) but it's okay for a female viera to choose to reject tradition and not want that lifestyle for themselves and not okay for a male viera to also reject tradition and also choose not to want the sort of lifestyle they have for themselves because...?
Welp, this conversation is back XD
It has nothing to do with it "being ok" then just the Females decided at one point they wanted to leave the forest and join the outside world. Going against their traditions, and being punished by being rejected by their own people and the Forest itself (Or more they lose "the voice" which the Viera that follow their traditions can hear)
The Males I think are also very different from the Females in where they arn't exactly sociable, and I think take their duty and tradition much more seriously then the Females. They dont even interact with their own females outside of the "Reproduction Period"
So really, just because the Girls do it, doesn't mean In-turn the Males will just do it.
Those are really nice artwork of male viera!

Found them at pinterest, so they were saved on someone's folder without the credits. If anyone get to know the artist...
No problem. I wish I could pin it, too. Editing the OP is an option, but I would prefer to leave the OP untouched - or at the very least, have the last edited date as close to the creation date as I possibly can to make it seem consistent. I did this with the original viera thread, and I very much regret editing this thread when I did.
Instead, I'll leave a link to that particular post in my signature for easy access and see how that works out.
The interviews I have compiled suggest male viera would sort of be a mix between miqo'te and elezen, so this is probable. If the words of Matsuno are anything to go by, we know that they are pretty light in terms of weight and have no fat. From what Yoshi P said, they are slim. Since Yoshi P said they were thinking about making it similar to miqo'te's face, their faces might look more on the bishounen side. Maybe it will even have omega, innocence, or warrior of light vibes to it. However, I don't doubt at least one face option will be more gruff.
As far as Male Viera ears are concerned I hope they don't get "bent" ears. The less hats/helmets issues we can avoid the better. Instead I would prefer if they got FFXII's Viera ears as an option.
I wouldn't recommend pinterest for finding art, the artist almost never gets credited. If you absolutely want to share uncredited art, please try using reverse google image search to find the artist :)
The first pic is unfortunately a little hard to find. The original artist may have privated a twitter page where it was sourced.
The second one is by Yutaka Toguchi :)
This has a new visual take on the male viera that's pretty interesting:
