I've seen a guy in PvP named President Trump.....
Long post ahead.
Had two pleasant experiences in levelling roulette today before work, before and after roulette.
First as GLD, getting into Copperbell. There were some weird issues where the mobs kept leashing but coming back, and randomly, the Blizzard-spamming BLM left our group... but I loved the AST we got. She did damage, kept her DoTs up, and let me double-pull without complaint (since BLM has Fire II at that level). It's not god-tier play or soloing the last boss or anything, but she used all her skills, and it was refreshing to see.
Second run: Halatali. The one who stood out here was a MCH, actually. She pulled chains, listened for my call to LB, and did her job. She didn't say a word the entire time, but you got the feeling she knew exactly what she was doing. I checked after and she only had one job to 70, with maybe four unlocked. If she was new, she was great.
And then third was my levelling roulette last night which I, unfortunately, had to leave. Went as level 70 DRK, got the 69 dungeon. Our healer was a new SCH -- and not just new to the dungeon, but a title-less sprout. (Jump potion, maybe?) The SAM was new as well, and we had a MCH who was not. The MCH was amazing, but the SAM and SCH...
... I don't blame the SCH for struggling. She did her best to keep me alive, even if that meant spamming Physick when I was at 100% health. The SAM, on the other hand, might as well have been auto-attacking. We reached the second boss after maybe 30 minutes, and that's where it got bad.
When the SAM died, the SCH didn't res. When the MCH died, the SCH didn't res, to the point that the MCH took the teleport back to the beginning. At this point, the boss was probably at 69%, with constant roomwide damage since the towers weren't filled. The SAM stayed down, and eventually, I spoke up.
Me: wipe
SCH: [Physick]
Me: stop healing
SCH: [Physick]
Me: (Heal!)(Stop!)
... and by that time she died, so we finally managed to reset the boss. I'm pretty sure her faerie was dead way before then.
We ran alllllllll the way back to the boss and took him on again. This time went much better: SAM avoided AoEs, learned the boss's pattern, and slowly but surely, he died! I'll admit I made some mistakes myself, like dropping Grit the first time, but we got through.
But quite honestly, we were (I believe) about 40 minutes deep into the dungeon. I had raid in 30, and I was frustrated. So I took the penalty and left. I know it sucks to have a tank bail on you, especially on the last levelling dungeon, but I wasn't convinced we would have made it in time.
Probably the most unfortunate experience of a new player being where they shouldn't. I think I saw one Indom total during the dungeon. I'm not trying to call this sprout a bad player, but please... learn to heal in lower-level dungeons! Healing is not a skill to be picked up right before endgame.
Honestly, I don't want to be negative or hateful, but runs like these wear on me. They make me not want to run roulettes at all, since they've been happening more and more. I know more new players are learning the game, but I'd prefer they get matched with mentors in mentor roulette, or given more help from the game itself. As it stands, it feels like a lot of players don't know what they're doing, and it's frustrating.
I guess I just wanted to provide some optimism towards DF, as while ive had some aggravating experiences, specifically with Tanks not having correct stance or holding aggro properly, generally ive found that pleasantry overiddes most hostility.
Whenever I enter a party I introduce myself, and lately in normal and savage ive been saying, "getting reps, sry in advance" at the start.
Last night in Temple of the Fist, I accidentally used the LB3 on the second boss for the boneheaded reason that I thought we were are on last boss.
immediately apologized.
No wipes, no one died.....and got two comms...
HOWEVER,
MECHANICS.....MECHANICS....
if you dont know...then ask, but yall...we do have a responsibility to explain them if people dont know.......right?
(vote dismiss)
To the tank and healer that left the Aery about 10 minutes ago after a wipe on the first pull, nice rage quit you muppets. Next time either don't pull so much (tank) or pop Sprint to keep up with the mass-pull tank (healer).
Dzemael Darkhold as a BRD. The DRK did relatively well. The AST specifically said they were drunk and possibly tried to hit on my character. The run took somewhere near 40 minutes.
Because the SMN. The sprout SMN. Who had no idea how to play their job.
I saw no Bane, ever. For the majority of the dungeon, they did nothing but Ruin II spam, regularly running dry on MP. I'm fairly certain most of their Aetherflow stacks went towards Energy Drain instead of Fester. I didn't know BRD could carry the DPS for a dungeon this hard, before.
It's SMNs like these that make me write off any SMN I see as incompetent until proven otherwise.
Growing up overseas, I learned British English (no accent though). Living in the US now, I get frustrated every time spell check flags behaviour and theatre. I've even been mocked for pronouncing the second "o" in chocolate, as in "cho -co-lat (ph.)" versus the way most Americans say it, like "choc-lat (ph.)". People find it odd when someone with zero accent of any kind uses non-Americanized pronunciations for words or non-American vernacular.
That newbie SMN I carried through Prea never used his DoTs. In fact, he was level 50 and wasn't farmiliar with the term, meaning no one had explained it to him, and since SMN was his only job, he had no gauge to compare how low his overall DPS was. Beimg SCH, I was able to show him how it works.
Afterwards, I helped him unlock Red Mage and he was immediately taken back by the raw output difference verses how it's layered on with SMN. He seemed keen on staying Red.
Hi Ametrine! Summoner is not a newbie friendly class.
DoT classes never are.
There is a certain skillset you must develop in order to play one. Unfortunately, FFXIV doesn't do a good job at teaching it.
It reflects well upon you that you took the time to help the newbie out. Plus ten lalafell points for you!
It sounds like she will much happier with her red mage. It's more straightforward.
You might have had a point, were it not for the fact that this particular SMN was not the only example of their ilk that I've had to carry. I'll cite the SMN I saw in Vault, who claimed that they didn't have Shadowflare, and completely ignored my advice to not spam Ruin III.
Going back to the SMN in Dzemael Darkhold, I told them to use Bane on a mob, after using Bio and Miasma, on the second pull in the entire dungeon, and still got ignored.
Sure, you will say, being ignored a few times isn't grounds to just give up. But you know what? It's not just "a few times". It's every time. You try remaining helpful after weeks, months, years of advising idiots how to do better, and then getting either ignored or insulted for that.
in dusk vigil on an alt with another rdm who insists on hard casting veraero/thunder, EXCEPT for during bosses. the sad thing is they're a mentor with "grandmaster of magic" title .__. and they're also level 55. s i g h
Hey Kacho! Lalafell points :O *grabby hands*
I joked with him that he settled on the hardest job in the game, and he responded, "That's just my luck :P"
He said he was the kind of player to avoid spoilers at all costs, so he never stumbled into a guide just looking up stuff. He's 101% blind to everything. He's only been playing a month!
(Also, we discovered you don't need HW or SB registered to unlock RDM/SAM, just a level 50 character. That's much better than how HW handled new jobs!)
Even if he hopped back into SMN, I was at least able to teach him a few needed basics to help him to improve his DPS a bit. He was super fun to play with either way.
I get what you're saying now.
Humans have this annoying tendency to dig in their heels when offered advice on how to improve. It's natural for someone to think their way is the right way even when they don't know what they are doing.
I guess, because summoner is a hard job to play correctly, that it is possible the class has a higher percentage of players in the lowest percentages of performance, aka 20% or less than what they could be doing if they played perfectly.
If only people weren't so stupidly stubborn. It costs nothing to at least consider another player's words. *sigh*
So, sadly we made two tanks leave two different instances yesterday.
1) Both my GF, her friend and myself queued up for Leveling Roulette. We got Dzmael Darkhold (Yay...). We got a sprout WAR that, after watching the cs, he introduced himself as a new player and new when it comes to tank the instance. He was also open to advice (According to him). So, reality hammer would hit at some point and some impatitient people would snap at the tank for not doing things properly. So, since I've plenty of tank experience, I told the tank how to pull and what to use... which got pretty much ignored until I called him out saying "If you are asking for advice, please listen to what I have to say". Okay, we clear the first boss and proceed to explain how these next pulls are commonly performed. He pulled an extra couple of mobs, didn't use any cooldown and proceeded to leave when the party wiped.
2) Same group composition, same roulette. This time Castrum Abania. We got a PLD and my gf was complaining because he wasn't using any cooldowns. So, tank dies because he was taking lots of damage. On our run back, my gf says in chat "Shield Oath is not your only cooldown", and this tank, without saying a word, just proceeds to leave.
The tanking anxiety is real.
Can confirm, you absolutely need SB registered. Stalled at 50 at the end of ARR for fun, but couldn't unlock anything til I bought expansions.
Video for relevance.
Nothing huge but I have two separate tales from tonight's roulette runs.
The Bad Run
Me (BRD) and an FC member (SAM) are both running DPS, get queued into Stone Vigil Hard for the 50/60 roulette. Right away, the tank (PLD) fails to hold aggro for the first few mob pulls. I end up taking it away just by doing simple AoE and this was a pattern for the entire run. I'm pretty sure I held aggro for about as much time as the tank did. :D Before the first boss, they say, "Oh sorry, I had the wrong shield equipped." Note this did nothing to really fix the problem but ehh, what can ya do? The tank can only do so much when he refuses to use anything but Fight or Flight. The only time Shield Oath popped up was for the first set of mobs.
Our healer (AST), unfortunately, wasn't terribly great either. They knew mechanics, to be fair, but the tank ended up dying once or twice because the AST was too busy DPSing. He also never healed me or my FC mate individually. We only ever saw heals if they were Helios... which normally wouldn't be a problem but doing that usually meant he'd grab aggro in the process (aggro hot potato). I'm also pretty sure he never Royal Roaded once. He used every card as he drew it. No AoE Balances or anything. The only upside was he at least used cards on the correct people.
The Good Run
Did expert roulette as SCH, got Ala Mhigo. Group was great, we burned through the dungeon in like 15-20 minutes. My only complaint was the BRD stood so far away from me. Baby, please, I wanna give you Succor.
Anyway, after we win, the DPS left right away but the tank simply faced me, changed into a full pig costume, and proceeded to dance for me. He also popped champagne. It was cute and I love it when people goof off with me. :o
I don't usually post here, but here are my 2 cents.
The game needs to implement a tutorial for each jobs about aoe and single targeting somehow because the amount of people that don't even read the tooltip is really high ..
Dzemael, samurai and smn as DDs, I'm tanking and pulling large packs to the last room before the boss (where you get a damage reduction). This pack took ages to clear, be cause the samurai wasn't even trying to aoe, not even doing a proper single target rotation (ignore combos etc). And the summoner, oh my god, he was standing here, spamming Ruin 1 ! no dots, no ban, nothing. Just ruin 1 spam, after 5 minutes (!) trying to clean that pack, I realized he was still full mana. When I asked why he didn't dot + bane he answered : "My bars have all my lv70, I ditched the lower levels ones" ... What does that even mean ??? How do you play smn at level 70 ? you don't dot at all ? Luckily a kick vote was initiated and succeeded, the sam left on his own. 2 dps joined quickly and we cleared the dungeon fast.
Another story, yesterday il69 dung, the monk had a pretty unique play style, Aoe bosses and single target in packs... Also tornado kick as soons as it is available. The baffled me, he clearly didn't read his skills tooltips at all and had no clue about how the job plays. I tried to ask him to aoe, only to get flamed by the others "it's just a leveling dungeon, don't ruin his fun"....
I don't understand that mentality at all, and I really wish there were some kind of system teaching players to read their skills or how to use their aoes/single target rotations.
What saddens me most is that I konw I'll meet that kind of players over and over again :(
I was leveling white mage, (healing is not currently my strong suit but I'm better at it than dps and want to improve further) and I got a tank who actually knew mechanics and did big pulls without it being too much for me to keep him alive. I even got to stunlock the big pulls with holy and apply some DoTs like aero 3, imagine that!
I pulled up Leveling DR on my MCH and got dropped into Cutter's Cry for the second time in two DRs. The MCH kit is pretty lackluster at 40 but EXP is EXP so I went with it. I was paired with a 39 MCH as my partner and the run took 27 minutes + change by the end of the run with skipping most of the packs and we were almost not out pacing the healing from adds on the first boss. We generated LB1 by the time the first boss was at 5% and I was tempted to use it just to finish the job but held onto it. I knew I wasn't the best DPS since I hadn't played MCH since raiding on it during Creator and the level 60 HW kit is significantly different from the 40 SB kit that it took a while for my to adjust. I even forgot I had my Rook turret until we got to the few trash packs before the first pull *Sheepish grin*.
Though this story isn't about the relatively low DPS. This story was instead about the level 70 AST who was healing the run. In short - I guess they were distracted by something because they let the tank die on a trash pack sometime after the first boss because they were AFK without mentioning it. They never reapplied Protect. They never used Cards. And they were constantly letting the Tank get down to uncomfortable levels of HP (sub 200) before realizing "Oh, I have to heal". They never Esuna'd any of the removable debuffs and they let the other MCH die when they inflicted by the Sludge DoT during the second boss. I got hit by the DoT at around the sub 10% HP mark for the second boss and my Second Wind was on CD so I thought I was going to die too but thankfully they realized "I should probably heal the non-weakened MCH" so I lived through the encounter >>; I'm willing to chalk up the fact they didn't remove DoTs due to not having Esuna active as a Role Action but still.. things like this makes me want to never step away from healer because I hate seeing parties subjected to that sort of inept play.
Ah well, that's the way the cookie crumbles at times. In other news I found out that both the Refresh and Tacticians Role Actions are enmity dumps. HOW IS THAT FAIR?!?!?!? /sarcasm I wish I could have that many enmity dumps as a WHM during O4S. lol.
Just took a voluntary 30 minute penalty from Doma Castle after landing with a PLD who didn't put an oath up until it caused a wipe (that being the second pull, because the NIN shadewalkered the first one), double pulled the first bit, and then tried to triple pull the iron giant into the gunships. He used Hallowed Ground, which was good, but then didn't follow that up with any other cooldowns at all. When the tank's health plummets from 60% to dead in the span of one cure II cast, and you know he's in a group with at least 1 friend, you just save them the effort and bite the bullet.
If you are going to set up a farm party in the party finder, please make sure you have it set up as such. Cause it can go quickly from a farm to struggling to get someone's clear. I joined for a farm, not to help get someone's clear.
For the uninformed, in Temple of the Fist, the "Spirit Wave" attack of the final boss places a big tornado on the player that is farthest away from him.
Why do healers feel the need to stack on the boss's ass? Why can't they be the ones to bait this tornado away? WHY IS IT THAT EVERY TIME I RUN THIS DUNGEON AS BLM, I WIND UP HAVING TO DEAL WITH THIS CRAP WHILE JUGGLING MY ROTATION WHEN IT WOULD TAKE THE HEALER 3 SECONDS TO MAKE MY LIFE EASIER? And don't even tell me a healer can't bait it out for whatever reason, because I've done it myself in the past.
I was doing leveling roulette last night and got the Aery. The members were a sprout PLD (albeit not his first time doing the dungeon), DRG, AST, and me as RDM. After the first set of mobs, the AST typed "big pull", clearly meant for the PLD. It was quite obvious that the tank wasn't comfortable doing it, given the fact that he sometimes stopped midway as if he was hesitating to attempt the feat. So I told him: "go with the pace you're comfortable with" and he never pulled more than he could chew.
I think the healer took offence at my words, cause he deliberately didn't heal me throughout the dungeon after I typed that. I only realized this during the first boss, when I noticed my health just keeps getting lower and lower. I ended up dead when the boss was at around 30% and was just lying there cause the healer was too cool to res me. As RDM, I can heal myself so I switched back and forth between dealing damage and restoring my health onwards.
The thing is... I don't think even the healer was ready for big pulls. Zero cardplay, lots of pre-pull regens, among other things. Even though the run was successful, I have to say I was quite disappointed with his attitude. At least the PLD and DRG were very accommodating (I really appreciate that comfort emote DRG, thank you).
On a more cheery note..
Did expert roulette earlier today and got Ala Mhigo. The members were a WAR, SAM, RDM, and me as AST. Everything went smoothly until I had a derp moment during the first boss. I walked straight into the boss' aoe and was just standing there (why brain, why?). The RDM ressed me and I apologized... the responses I got from the team, esp. the RDM, were very sweet. Everything onwards went well and then the rare mount dropped from the last boss. I didn't get it, but I'm very happy that the RDM did. Congrats to her!
I used Duty Roulette: Expert and got the Temple of the Fist. We had a dark knight, bard and ninja, and I was scholar. On the first few pulls, the dark knight wouldn't stop using Sprint to pull everything to the wall. That meant I had less Sprint duration and fell behind.
Queue him saying I'm bad and quitting when I defend myself. Ugh.
Doing roulette trial as bard.
Shinryu in progress, but was voted abandon and trial ended.
Try again. Susano in progress. After 2 minutes only lack 1 healer. Well, I dislike do trial as healer, but I leave to try help as scholar. I had luck of not dying and success in trial...
But I still need do daily in roulette trial XD
Try roulette again as bard and... Shinryu again in progress. 1 wipe and in new attempt, lacking 1%, everybody fall by Diamond Dust except me. Well, my HP as bard is 39k HP because I use vitality materia in acessory, but I cannot survive alone against Shinryu and new wipe. After 3 wipe, party vote abandon.
Now going rest reading some hentai manga with tentacles. In 1 hour I try again.
Bad story:
Leveling roulette: Doma Castle. I’m DPS for a change.
We start with WHM throwing out a regen as tank is pulling. WHM gets punched in the face, Tank regrabs aggro and keeps pulling. WHM decides best way to keep tank alive is to spam Medica 2. Wipe #1. Re-protect and run back..aaaaand then WHM facepulls before tank shows up. WHM dies. Wipe #2. We trek back and continue to be healed predominantly through Medica 2.
By some miracle, we reach the first boss.
WHM decides to mix things up- now switching between Cure 2 and medica 2 spam. Even with me tossing them a mana shift, WHM is oom at 60%. No signs of Lucid Dreaming or Thin Air, but thankfully the first boss is easy enough and everyone manages to pull through with their own potions/skills. At this point, WHM announces we all have to wait for him while his mana refills. Everyone enjoys the BGM for a bit and then we continue to the first room with the doggos. Pre-pull regen again, because why not, followed by Medica 2. Despite tank only juggling 3 enemies, WHM runs out of mana again. Tank dies, but the NIN and I manage to kill the enemies. I /p ask why they’re burning their mp so quickly. They /say “cause.”
As much as I’d like to believe they were trolling, they only had WHM leveled (AST still at 30, RDM 50) ..so I'm actually wondering if somehow someone legitimately made it to Doma Castle without ever discovering mp managing skills. Regardless, my heart goes out to the dps whose time he’ll waste next.
Good story:
Leveling roulette 2: Aurum Vale, again as DPS.
It was sprout tank’s first time and they did great. First room was a little slow with single pulls, but hey, no wipes! At one point later tank accidentally pulled more then they meant to, but through CDs and heals not only did they stay alive, but after they laughed about the sudden spike in excitement. Dungeon ended in emote spam and well wishes.
Aeri (leveling Roulette) the other day. Was in there with a buddy helping with his leveling Process a bit on his "Ninja". had one Sprout( new guy) as Monk and a Tank.
Thinks where working out quite ok i say until final Boss really.
The sprout was still in cutscenes, while the tank rushed in and pulled without waiting.
Me:" why do u pull already? we are 3 people"
The sprout somehow barely made it in but he really had to rush and probably skiped the video sequence to get in in time.
Tank:" Dunno what your problem is, we are 4 people, change your attittude"
Like seriously? Snarky comment after i asked why the hell he did not w8 for the new guy?
Me:" he rushed in to make it in time because u idiot pulled"
Well, idiot probably was not the right way to put it but i was really annoyed after that. What he did then was just rude:
after the small little dps check where u have to go into Estiniens Bubble to survive, Estinien is still on the field, He turned the boss torwads him and Killed him, wiping us in the process. My friend and i already said to each other "that was no accident"
He was north jumping around in circles while nidhogg turned and cleaved us etc., note, he was a 24/7 tank stance Tank so now way he lost aggro, he even got every Shadewalker he can possibly get from my friend. Our guess was the he on purpose "Shirked" one of us.
Anyway, that move, whatever it was was a really dick move and we all did not take that too kindly, so a votekick followed after another of his snarky comments, and insulting me for misstiping some words, (well excuse me, english is still not my main language, so some hickups can happen)
This guy really had some Temper problems i can tell u, getting angry because i asked him why the hell he pulled without waiting on the new guy, and after small arguring purposely wiping the grp out of spite? No comment to that... In my eyes he deserved to get booted out.
When i run expert(after the initial unlocks i have only run these through expert), i wind up in Ala or Kugane like 90-95% of the time(my groups get a lot of mount drops and i got mine ages ago, but i rarely if ever see minis). Every time i randomly hit Temple again(usually after not having been there in a couple weeks) i have to quickly try to remember the mechanics. The cats arent too bad, but 4 arms is annoying. He usually gets me at least once with either the fore-aft/port-star thing(half the time i dont remember if i need to be in or avoid the area hes calling the first time he does this move) or the shield thing. It was maybe my 3rd time there when i figured out the main guys orb thing(the rest of the group picked them up the first two, i just stood there spamming damage). And i honestly thought that spirit wave was based on hate position. It always seemed to get me when i started hot, and to get someone else when i started with diversion and maybe an extra second or two of setup. So yeah, not super obvious.
