That's redundant, since GUI inherently excludes real life. The whole theory and terminology of GUI means non native interface. Think on it.
Until we can do VR mindjacking, advancing GUI for anything is important.

I'm all for classy speach bubbles due to roleplay. (only able to do /say /shout /party) They do not need to be in CS or from npc, But it does help WITH immersion as you see who is saying what rather then getting lost in the chat log. I'll say this RP i kind hard with JUST a chat box, you lose sight of who is talking, and who is roleplaying what. As for screen clutter most games have a radius on how close you need to be before seeing them. Honestly this can be helpful for chating as well as chat animations which adds immersion also. Opention to turn it off or limit wht cht bubbles are on is ok also. ( for the haters)
@ Maj I love those also, you dod a good job. That is a classy look, and aids in the RP for those who partake in it.
chatlog....speechbubbles...erm...i take speechbubbles
I dont think so... the screen is cluttered enough. And no , no toggle on/off option, just dont do it.
It is ok the bug died you can remove it from your butthole.
The screen doesn't get that cluttered actually and most stuff is toggled anyway.
Honestly you guys get on my case for "just hating this for sake of" yet here your doing the same. Unless someone has a valid reason which don't include a personal dislike (which is what a toggle is for) then there is no reason to prevent a change that is welcome if not needed to the game. I hope to RP since I got a good idea what I wanna do and I got lost in the chat box. With speech bubbles it is a heck of a lot easyer to see who is talking. And it don't get lost in the emotes or in the chat box. The chat box tends to have conver sations bleed together with multiple ppl talking. Like I stumbled on a ooc rp meeting and I sat in on it. And most of what was said ran into each other and it was hard to see who said what.
Please keep speech bubbles and comic sans font outta my XIV. Having said that the fact that NPC text appears in the middle of the screen AND at the chat-log at the same time looks really messy and frankly quite amateurish. Why can't we have a NPC chatlog that SAVES NPC dialoque from the past few days at all times. I remember in XI it was not nice that you could easily scroll back the text with a controller but once you closed the console you had no way of knowing what the key NPCs just said.
Ofcourse this is all pretty unnecessary in XIV where you don't have to pay any attention to any of the text anyway because NPC quests are made to be like leves. Anyway with tools to view the text properly maybe the designers could be encouraged to do some NPC quests that require you to pay attention to some of the text too and not just map markers? One can dream...
Bubbles! Yes! Example Click Me! Bubbles! GO!
We heard back regarding the possibility of implementing speech bubbles as a chat tool. The team let us know that there are no plans to use speech bubbles in the game, but that they are working to improve the chat windows, and chat system, so if you have any feedback I'd be happy to pass it along. (I don't think this thread works for those kind of suggestions, so perhaps a new one?)
Hi - new to the forums, my first post actually (I was going on a liking spree)
Has anyone tried PS3's "Home" - it has speech bubbles and I rather like them!
If you are far away - you cant see the speech and have to move in closer to "listen" etc.
Anyways - thats my 2 cents :D
Take care and enjoy the long weekend - rapture party anyone??? ;)
agreed... I do not want my screen flooded with chat bubbles from say and shout, expecially on Besaid... you have 1 Eliza Joran, no comment -.-, and all the say RPer's my screen would be up to the hairline in chat bubbles I would quit instantly...
this is not to say I hate the community or what they do... but I would prefer my screen not be bogged down by multiple upon multiple chat bubbles. I have more important things to look at on my screen than a "game immersion" breaking chat bubbles... I am not in a comic book!
The game is fine and playable without Speech Bubbles
So it's not need to implement
Oh yeah, 'cause looking down to a chat box is so immersive.
People who have an issue with chat bubbles should be shot in the head. Since point one we said they should be toggleable. So what do you care? Seriously.
really shot in the head? angry much because we disagree with text bubbles? text bubbles imho is way to cartoony and more immerison breaking than looking at my chat window. my evidence
chat window: all dialog organized nice and clean, and ORGANIZED in a manner at which I can read it quickly and in the correct order. I also won't miss something someone says because they are not directly in front of my camera.
Chat bubbles: pop up, overlap and not organized in a fashion to easily follow the conversation, if a lot of people talking at once you see chat bubbles EVERYWHERE! way to much to try and read at a quick enough pace to keep up with conversations because I might have to shift my camera around to try and read all the comments, then it comes down to battle: It would clutter up my screen while I am wanting to use my mouse to select my target, I also might miss a prompt due to maybe my camera angle in the fight. I have played MMO's with chat bubbles and It was so hard to read what was going on because majority of the time just to see everyones chat bubbles without them over lapping each other would have to be directly overhead completely scrolled out so I can see the person that the chat bubble came from and then what they said...
I don't think Speech bubbles should be in the game. After all the game has a pretty realistic look and feel to it and speech bubbles don't exactly fit said style.
lol, I would further comment on the fact that I noticed they were on Besaid server just like me, and with my history of how I have seen RPer's act... If you do not play by their rules they will shun you hate on you and try to blist you from the community.... because you will not RP in say or anything. At least it is unofficial so I can talk how I want. I like some of the rper's and heck it is sometimes fun to participate with them. I am just stating that some in the community take it too far because you do not play by their Made up rule's of the world!
Who gives a rats ass anyways? I don't see why it's such a big deal to begin with.
It'd be cool to have it implemented and still have the chat box at the bottom.
/joining in. HOORAY No Speech Bubbles!
Oh I would kill for this.. it's been my number one requested feature from day one, and was my biggest dislike of FF XI, too.
Sure, there are people here don't like it, but all of the reasons not to like it that I've seen could be answered by simply making them toggleable, which would be the logical thing to do anyway. I mean, really, all these people screaming yay! over them not being implemented.. seriously? Why not just a toggle option? Is it really so horrific giving the people that really want them the option when you can just leave them switched off? That strikes me as kinda jerk-y..
Even if someone official's come in and said there are no plans at this time, I really hope that opinion changes eventually. Speech bubbles, be they transparent boxes of Vagrant Story-esque (which is something can already be said of FF XIV's style) bubbles, would, for me, go a very long way for making this world perfect.
lol not to be jerky.... but the toggle feature, so to implement it and make it toggled would mean they wasted their time in development on something that 5% of the community will use while the other 95% has it toggled off, great use of resources there...
edit: and yes same can be said about a lot of the other toggle things they added some are actually useful but i don't like to use them because it gets in the way, I.E. the hp/level/aggro icon bars. While another toggle such as the head display one I like it and use it if I do not like the headgear on my character but definatly could do with out that toggle feature too. but for the speech bubbles that is just a huge annoyance and sure we can toggle it off but I bet to you much gil fellow besaidian that if it was used it would overload your screen with the amount of people that talk at once in a city and would bog you down and hurt your fps and processes just so you can have 50 bubbles popping up on your screen every 2-10 seconds.
Well, first off, I think a good bit more than 5% of the community would use it. Not everyone cares so much as to come here on the forums and scream it up or down, but there's a good chance there are plenty who'd just toggle it on, mildly prefer it, and keep it on. Sure, maybe the majority wouldn't, but I'd bet you at least 30% would - enough to justify it - and wouldn't be surprised if it were used by half the playerbase. Remember, vocal minorities and all that.
Second, toggling it on isn't a one-time thing. I would toggle it on and off as necessary, just as I currently do with player names. Sometimes during combat, they're necessary. Ninety percent of the time they look stupid and unnecessarily gaudy and really do, for me, qualify as unnecessary clutter since unlike speech bubbles, they don't go away once they've given you the information they have to give. If names weren't toggle-able, I might even have quit by now. Though I admit my preferred system would be one wherein names only show up over targeted/highlighted/moused over entities. Or at least where the target data box showed the same info as does the target's name..
As for waste of development resources? Eh, opinion. I say enough people would use it to justify the expenditure, you don't .. gonna have to agree to differ until someone official puts out proper numbers, which themselves can only really be gotten from implementing such a system and finding out - even a poll wouldn't get nearly the whole picture. Though yeah, an official poll would probably help.
Whatever happens, the lack of such a feature is still weird, given while in this case it does appear to be a stylistic choice, the vast majority of MMOs that don't give the option to have character-connected text boxes of some form do so because they're cheap, cynical F2P jobs with a projected lifespan of a year and a half.
This may sound anti social, but walking by I don't want to see what people say in /say. This feature might be useful for /shout , ex. "I'm some eccentric guy rping as a seller buy my wares", me: "oh crap where is that guy :/, of course they never <pos>" but otherwise I really don't wanna see peoples text in the world except for in my little text bar. I think ffxi and xiv have clean chat bars compared to a lot of games, and I like reading text in that situation when its clean and neat.
edit: I'm okay with being able to toggle them though, thats a compromise that usually makes everyone happy.
I think chat bubbles would be nice, I would use them :) I support this. I just would like the option to decide which ones I would like to see (like maybe I just want to see /tell or /linkshell not /say... etc)
Also, let the dev team decide what they can spend their time on and what not. They will also decide when they will spend their time on it and when not. Just think of making this game more popular, give the players the options.. even if it is 30% of the current player base that wants a certain feature, and don't hate :)
First ever forum post:
Yay no chat bubble!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, And its not because you disagree. There's plenty of people who want chat bubbles, and if they are toggeable then there's no reason why to be against them. [Removed by Moderator according to the FINAL FANTASY XIV FORUM Guidelines.] They are just taking gratification off other people being denied something that wouldn't even modify their own gameplay.
Fensfield wrote down my thoughts exactly (although ten times more polite)
Speech bubbles are unnecesarry and I think by now we saw that the people who are submitting in the forums don't want them(majority here at least)
I'm sorry, but I don't want to run around a city or whereever and see 5 bubbles popping up...especially, how are they gonna work with overlay? Which bubble will overlay over another, would you have to turn the camerka to see the other bubble etc.
It's just not necesarry, this is no comic book.
PS: Why don't we just make the whole game toggable?? I mean, honestly...this whole "toggable" thing for almost EVERYTHING by now that people want is just getting out of hand.
Agreed, I say no to speech bubbles. Doesn't fit the style of game. I am able to read everything in the chatlog just fine thank you.
It's not like anyone even talks anyways.
I would love to see some widgets that allow us to connect to Ventrillo, teamspeak, or any other chat service, in game... What I mean by this is that since playing in full screen I have no way of seeing who is talking or switching channels and having an in game widget would be a very nice and useful touch, at least until alt-tab starts working.
Now, I know that wouldn't be a high-priority request, but I think it would help and be a nice tool. If not by SE then by other users when we can customize the UI.
As for communication, I would like to see notifications when friends sign online or offline and even with linkshell members join the channel etc.
I would like to be able to communicate between shells with a /l1 /l2 /l3... to talk with the other linkshells I have equipped, without having to switch shells all the time. /l would always work for my equipped shell.
I would love to be able to send messages to another player even when they are offline, this could work with the mailbox system so it would be nice to send messages or items as needed.
I would also like to have an LS message and even a better UI for doing all the other LS things that have been suggested, so I won't get into those here.
Elements like <call1> would be excellent, and being able to increase the font size of the text is key... Playing on a big screen, I find that the text is too small, but I love having so much space for other things. Give us the ability to increase font size.
Thanks for listening Bayohne, and have a great day. :)
No speech bubbles, jumping lowered n priority and very possibly never implemented... Lots of good news about lame features not coming lately :D
@Delmont: encourage your LS to use mumble, it has a very nice overlay that will allow you to operate the chat and see who's talking without alt/tab
Seriously? Seriously?
Chat bubbles have been used in games for a long, long time before WoW was even a twinkle in Blizzard's eye. They've been a fantastic tool for multiplayer games for ages.
Even though it's basically /thread since the devs have weighed in, I'm still very disappointed that it's not going to be at least a toggleable option. Having to keep my eyes glued to my chat window to interact with players is pain.
