Hamtaro
Should I say what's the meaning behind my name? This picture says it all:
http://www.animewallpapershow.com/wa.../hamtaro-4.jpg
My first character in FFXIV was on another persons account as one of her subs. Her name was Bitty Blackthumb (lalafell). Fell in love with the game but couldn't transfer her. I bought my own CE and created an duskwight elezen. I wanted her nickname to be Bitty but I felt it didn't fit her character as a full name. I was a little sad to have to leave her behind so hence, Bittersweet. The whole name of Bittersweet Rhapsody refers to a whole slew of things including a GD reference. ;)
My chocobo is named Giacomo, after a Kentucky Derby winner from 2005. He won it while being listed at 50-1 odds. And people wonder why I spent so many GC seals "Pimping my Ride". How could I not with a namesake like that? :D
*waves to Noble* Note for the rest of you....if the Coliseum allows spectators you all are going to want to watch him.
Back to original subject, thank you so much OP for creating such a fun thread.
What a fun topic!
Lumos Lightwand
In my very early days of XI on Seraph, mid-2004, there was a teleporting (this was a big deal then!) JP taru WHM based in Windurst named Light. She was one of the nicest people I met along the way. I loved the name she gave her character and felt it was very fitting. It stuck with me. I named my first XI mule Lumos, after both Light and the Harry Potter spell (which lights up the end of your wand so you can see the way). Lumos was the character I always wished I leveled, and the name I always wanted to use again on a main.
Fast forward to late 2010 and giving XIV a try. Lumos was the no-brainer first name of my character but coming up with a last name was harder. I wanted it to represent the fact that WHM would by my first job and always my main focus. Ended up with Lightwand a little hurriedly, basically just meaning I would carry a wand and predominately use it for casting white magic. Super cheesy, right? Also, I liked the alliteration. I certainly did NOT intend for the last name to literally define what the first name meant, which is what it actually does. :/
I'd actually like to come up with a new last name, but not super pressed about it. I probably won't do it, but I welcome suggestions! :)
EDIT!
Oh - my chocobo's name is Dobby (Harry Potter char, may he RIP)
My retainers names are Jillybean (my real name/nickname) and Spiritbond (what he would basically be storing, but I plan to change his name to one of my other beloved XI mule's names - Mundy)
My path companion name is named after my son's online characters names and it's very unique so not going to reveal that as a search on google is basically leads straight to his chars... o.O
Xianteare
XI = ffxi
Antaere = Scorpions from Gustave Tunnel
Quinast
My last name all rearranges -- Sanquist minus ones s
I wanted Xi'Antaere but they wouldn't allow the '
Firon something i have been using since i was young back when i first played FF 1 on NES, and my last name is from Valkyrie Profile 1&2 Lezzard Veleth I think he is one of the best villains out of all the games i played.
Drakar is a pen/paper rpg character I played and Shen is god on chinese.
Ps. Im not chinese
Bailee; a girl i had crush on. Sancta; a more femine form of the latin word Sanctus, which means holy. My alt is a miqoute named Meracle Sanctas; yes Meracle from Star Ocean game ;p and again last name is a mix up of Sanctus. Also I like the name Meracle because its like "Holy Miracle"
Daniolaut Leonheart
Daniolaut:
While pondering my name for FFXI (actually was only 2 months before i started FFXIV) I started going through some of the automated names and was inspired to change my own first name to match the types of names spoken in FFXI. I always think of Camelot when I say my name.
(pronounced: "Danny - o - lot" or "Daniel - aut" (it pretty much sounds the same when you say it)
Leonheart:
I'm a fan of Squall Leonhart, but as I made my last name I followed the misspelling i used on other social accounts
Chocobo:
Thorcobo, I am from Norwegian descent, thus the "Thor"
Companion:
Rinoisa, just a change of spelling of Rinoa's name from FFVIII
Retainers:
Daniolautia, this one is a give away. (Just a female version of my name.)
Leatisie (I actually cannot remember if that is the proper spelling of my other retainer, but her name was generated by reviewing other generated retainer names, and then changing spelling around from my own similar created name.)
Rau Lecreuset. One of my favorite Gundam Antagonists. I didn't realize Lecreuset was a cookware brand until someone asked me why I named myself after a teapot.
My name is derived on how many times I've restarted FFXI and FFXIV. At some point I was no longer satisfied with my character, killed it, and started over. Took 3 tries for XIV... It's like beating a Dead Horse.
Mines Norack, i been using it ever since i started playing final fantasy. forget how i came up with it but i really like it i use it for all my electronics like my xbox is called norack-xbox and so on. i have had it for years and absolutely love the names but on occassions always think about changing it simply cause as of recently theres a huge amount of players that love to call me no-rack and make that little joke <,< it's pronounced nor-ack!!! XD probably shoulda thought that one threw. If i do change it i might change it to my chocobos name (Which i wont say cause if i do change it or use it as an alt i want it to be available.) who is the god of justice and judgement.
Neudaiz was a gorgeous planet in an MMO I used to play a few years ago and it's where I had my old characters room at. Amy is just a character name I've stuck with in all the games I play because I don't like using my own name for my characters.
Kinyoto Myogein
I've had it and used it forever. Came up with it in middle school for a thing I was doing with my friends. Been using it for about 10 years! ^^
Pwnagraphic is a different story, and that's primary my "alias" on any game.. but my mains name is Avadon Zaxxon
Avadon is a derivative of "Abbaddon" or "Abadon" which is Russian for "Angel of Death". No, I'm not Russian but I liked the sound of it. I used it for the first time in DCUO.
Zaxxon is actually a game company from the early '90's. Actually they might be a Arcade company, but if you Google Zaxxon, something game related will come up. I thought it sounded good with Avadon and it was also kind of a nod to early gaming.
OC name of a character I created long long ago.
I like the name Esumi because it has no meaning but the sound is so pretty. Some parts of the name could mean: "e" = picture/drawing/protection "sumi"-e = black ink, "umi" = sea/ dark ocean but the full name "Esumi" has no meaning.Exept for the last name Aoi. "aoi" stands for my favorite colour blue.
I use the name Esumi Aoi for most of the online games I play (besides my nick name Evil Siren, which is mostly used as my artists name on my fanarts or on communities and for lan party games like borderlands, l4d etc.)
My character name is just my internet alias name.
"Xeonerable" which I made up with the two words Inexorable and Exonerate.
As for my character having "Fenrir" as a last name... its just the XI server name we got to keep since I couldn't come up with a last name for my username. lol
Syllable mashing then searching what segments of the 'name' meant and got:
Sanadaiyeve: Beautiful Beloved Life
Paranthia: Ornament of the Divine
Called Sana in game.
She's always frowning at me.
Katra Leviathan was the name of my main character in XI. As I waited for XI to be released, I actually made a modest list of names I was going to use, just in case a couple of preferred ones were taken. As it turns out, every name I tried on that list was already in use. After about an hour or two on the character create screen, trying different race/name combos, I had reached the end of my patience, thought of Katra, and created a Mithra RDM.
Although Katra was just a play on the English word cat, I have had several comments over the years of other players who thought I had took the name from a series called Gundam. I had watched two episodes of Gundam before getting bored with it just to see if I could spot the other Katra, but I had no luck. Doing a search online also netted no results, which I guess means it is a really minor character, or they use a different spelling.
What I did find online though was that Katra is apparently used in Vulcan religion in Star Trek. My full name also seems to bring up a lot of odd music bands as well.
Leviathan is a name I carried over from XI. As I had an active XI account at the time, I was allowed to carry over my server name and use it as my last name. Although I will admit that choice may be both a blessing and a curse once the Leviathan primal fight is released. On the one hand I will feel a little guilty with trying to beat the snot out of the creature I was named after just for a chance at a drop, but on the other hand, it will be pretty cool to have a nice weapon, or a piece of armor, with my last name on it. Something along the lines of "Leviathan Sword", "Spear of Leviathan", etc. I guess I could always view it as a way to speed up the inheritance process.
Naivir Alexaire. Naivir is just a reversal of my XI character's name, Rivian, which itself was a randomly generated name from FFXI. I also had a Mithra mule in XI named Naivir, so when i decided to play Miqo'te in XIV instead of Elvaan, i went with the Naivir name. Alexaire is a variation of my server from XI, Alexander. I wanted Alexandria but XIV would not allow it.
Luna = The moon, and since my Character is a Keeper of the Moon it seemed fitting.
Rhiki = An idealistic person, with a desire to help others.
My chars name is Kamino Akari. It's Japanese meaning the light of God or God of light. I picked this name while studying Japanese in high school back when I first started FFxi as a White Mage.
Eliniel is an OC my friend came up for me a loooooong time ago while we were sitting on a plane.
She was really obsessed with Lord of the Rings and wanted to write me into her fanfics lol.
I've used it ever since because I thought it was pretty XD.
It's pronounce- Ah-lynn-ee-ehl.
Kirei = Pretty, Beautiful (Japanese)
Koneko = Kitten, Kitty, Smalll cat (Japanese)
So basically "Pretty Kitteh" or "Beautiful Kitten" xD
Nordic naming conventions. Used prefix and suffix combined to make my own name
Raagnar = mighty warrior
Olvarr = Ale warrior
But i just say it means mighty beer warrior. I found out later from a swedish friend i spelt it wrong but oh well.
What a nice thread. :) I enjoyed reading everyone's posts.
My character names, in both console and MMO games, are mostly names I've read in books, video games, and/or from other sources. My main's name Akina, is actually one of the few that didn't come from a book or game. I was looking up Japanese names for what reason I don't remember (boredom most likely, lol). I happened to see it on a couple of sites and I like how it sounded when I said it out loud. Not really sure of it's meaning, but a couple places I looked said "spring flower" was one. Being born in the spring, I felt a bit of a connection with that one. :) Her last name is actually ippiki ookami, which I believe is translated to lone wolf. Lone-Wolf is one of my main aliases, and I wanted something Japanese for her last name, so I went with that. Lol, pretty fun listening to my ls friends complain about it when they try to spell it. XD Hehe
I'm not gonna say my alt's name as she was mostly based off me, name included, and was originally going to delete her. After I got a good amount of levels on her though, I didn't have the heart to. XD Lol
The Path Companion on each of my characters have names from the Eragon series. Akina's was a male Elezen named Oromis and my alt's was a male lalafell name Orik. Not really because they're similar in character to their namesakes (Akina's Path Companion is definitely not like the Oromis in Eragon. xD), but mostly they seemed to fit.
Because I love to watch the Triple Crown horse races, I knew that I was going to name my chocobos after some racehorses. Although Akina's was named Seabiscuit, who in real life didn't win any of the Triple Crown races (originally was going to name her's Secretariat, but ended up being one letter too long. ; ; ). My alt's chocobo is named Barbaro, after the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner.
As for my characters' retainers, eh... there was really no meaning behind their names. I just went with whatever popped in my head. XD
Akina: Fargo and Carter (Eureka series)
Alt: Cim (Eh... just a shortened version of his original name. Lol)
Avadon, you may be interested to know that the source root of Abaddon is Hebrew, in which it means an intensive form of 'destruction' (like in Job 26 or Psalm 88). There is in fact a famous passage in Revelation 9:11 in which Abaddon is called 'the destroyer': "They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon."
When I played Final Fantasy I on GBA there was an optional boss named Atomos, I thought the name was pretty cool, but I decided to change the 'o' by 'a' and this is how my name was born. As for Vesperae, this is the name of the world of my first MMO ever, it was called Slayers Online, a legacy of my first experience in a Multiplayer game.
Zehira in Hebrew (F) for "protected, careful, and cautious."
