You clearly have no standards, let me guess you play all games on low?

This game is very poorly optimized as I'm sure has been mentioned a few times already.
FFXIV needs to stop touching my computer inappropriately... it already has nightmares in the middle of the night where the fan starts revving to max for no apparent reason, I figure he must be having night terrors... poor little guy.
I See no issues at all in Limsa. Yes there is that curtain effect but I don't see any rough textures on my side of the pond.
Task Manager doesn't contain info about the GPU. How much of it is being used is no indication of "Optimisation". As far as memory goes...this game stores nearly everything in Memory, woohoo.
@Nixon, how is your GPU fan suddenly revving up for no reason?
Nah my PC is not running hotter then it should be, as I stated numerous times heat is only an issue with FFXIV. When I power my PC on my CPU temp is 24C idle, when XIV is running it is 32C. I have swapped cases from a Raidmax to a Corsair 800D re-thermal pasted everything with IC Diamond 24 paste. The only thing I have not done is swapped out the stock fan on my GPU. The GPU really does seem to be working hard when playing XIV and that is it. This is the only game I have seen those temperatures from, so in reality it must be an issue with the way XIV is rendering and storing things in memory.
I never said i had rough textures, it is the LOD "curtain effect". And go read some techsites/windows 101 i was referring to the lack of full CPU core utilisation in task manager not anything to do with gpu usage lmao. Don't try be cocky when you are clueless, it doesn't work.
A lot of this arguing is fairly pointless. It's a well-known fact that FFXIV is poorly optimized, has been since beta. I love the game and even I can see it, there's a lot to be done in this area. However I don't see them getting to this until after the large battle update simply because the optimization isn't the highest priority at the moment.
Arcell, this isn't a topic designed to do anything but get acknowledgment from the Devs that they are aware this is an issue and needs to be addressed. I can understand the large battle update needing to be done, however this was brought up to many times in beta and still completely ignored. My hope is to garner acknowledgment from a Mod or Dev and to get status updates from them as they are working on it.
The problem is and always has been PC development with SE takes a back burner approach, it happened in FFXI and I do not want to see it in FFXIV
Right I totally get that, I was just putting a few things into perspective. I was just simply stating that while I'm sure they're aware and working on it, other things do have a higher priority. I certainly see this being one of their next big projects. Honestly I don't know how they couldn't be aware of it lol. Also it seems at this point the community reps for our forum are still waiting on replies for other things so it may be a bit before we see any kind of acknowledgement here.
And what hardware do you have Verde, please keep in mind this topic is not supposed to be a mine is better then yours, this was designed to be something to grab a Devs or Mods attention and get the topic moved to be worked on as we all seem to agree that the client does need optimization at some point.
I am in favor of any game design not using mostly the CPU to generate graphics like a former title I can think of. /cough
I am in favor of graphics.
I am strongly against my computer having a seizure because it can't keep up with the graphics.
Yes Sinz I understand that, questions I have are what version of drivers are the pair of you using, What OS what Direct X version. I know ATI is horrid with drivers, perhaps there might actually be something there, the only way well know for sure is if the pair of you post your stats.
In my case I have heard possibly an aftermarket cooler may help my video card out substantially as the EVGA stock cooler apparently is not the greatest.
Still wont solve the issues with game design but maybe just maybe there is something here.
I myself have never had any issues with ATI drivers, and i've been using them since my GForce4 MX440 died 50 bajillion years ago, but still i'd be stupid to rule a driver issue out hence me asking for the screenshots. But since he unsurprisingly didn't show up i'll chalk one up on the scoreboard for me.
An acknowledgement of it would be nice, yes, but I feel the need to point out most users are saying FFXIV is using somewhere between 1-2GB of RAM. A PS3 only has 512MB, so they MUST be aware of the issue. The game in it's current state won't run on a PS3.
Ok i just went out and dropped another 70 USD on a better cooler for my GPU, I can confirm a 40C drop in temp across the board on my GPU while playing XIV so far. Will check it in some Behests and during leves tonight, I can say the Zalman cooler so far appears to be worth it.
Also seems when OC my Card to 750/1500/1701 mhz with the new cooler and setting AA to 8xQ MSAA my card is actually now running at 43C which is even better then the 46C I got Stock with out doing any OC and leaving my game at 2x AA...
I'm not arguing that the game doesn't need optimization, but there are other ways to improve GPU performance. I updated my drivers the other night, my video looks a little cleaner for my settings, and I have noticed that my fan no longer runs at full blast all the time, so I'm guessing it helped the card run better and cooler.
Maybe someone here can help me, considering people are talking about how taxing the game is....
When the game first launched, I bought the CE, and had the game maxed in everything except for Ambient Occlusion and Depth of Field....and then I turned Depth of Field on and it still ran just fine....I quit in November to give the game time to get fixed and went and played WoW with my Dad (long story, but in short, it helped me find him again after not talking for a long time....and it was the only way I knew I could get in contact with him)....anyways, so I came back last week, I reformatted my hard-drive, did a clean Win7 install, which is what I was running before....updated the game AND all my drivers fully and got all the up to date stuff....and the game runs WAY worse then it did before....to the point that I can only run it acceptably on Standard now across the board....
It's weird as hell, and has me terribly confused because I had bought this computer (built it myself, not pre-built) specifically FOR this game.....did something happen with the patches that I'm not aware of, or should I roll back my ATI drivers for the older ones? I know my way around computers....a lot, but this has me incredibly confused, and slightly more than irritated. Thanks in advance for the replies and/or tips.
I posted this in the Tech Support forums too, but you all seem fairly active in this thread, so I figured I'd give it a shot here as well.
Game performance shouldn't have degraded THAT much, you can try a different driver but it shouldn't make too much difference. What is your setup?
AMD Phenom II x4 965 (with an Arctic Cooler 7 Pro)
6 GB DDR3
ATI RADEON 5850
1 TB WD 7200 RPM HDD
That's really all that matters when it comes to the game....it's really freakin' weird though, and makes me think I should try wiping the computer again....I dunno.
Try dropping the resolution a notch and making sure General/Background drawing aren't on max. If that doesn't work drop it some more and if that doesn't work you have a problem ;)
See, someone else mentioned the General/Background drawing were added in the time I was away, so it's possibly that, though I have them set to standard right now, and as for the resolution, I always had it at 1920x1080....pretty much all of my settings I set back the way they were when I played at launch, and it just chugs hardcore....unless it really is that General/Background drawing thing and standard is higher than it was before you could change it (you know, it was really set to like, 4 or something when it wasn't optional).
Yeah i'm pretty sure they expanded the options at one point, i just know that when i set it to max i didn't see much difference apart from the game ran a lot slower.
I never stated it was the cure to all ills, I just simply stated it dropped my temps by 50C in game. It is the solution I have on hand currently for my benefit so that I do not fry my card. Others that have a GTX 460/470 can attest when that fan ramps up it is loud as hell. It is an old fan design and should be replaced regardless of what XIV does to the card. The game is still far more taxing on hardware than any other game in history and I still believe it to be a design flaw in the game itself.
Verde come on man you cant honestly sit here and tell me 85C is Normal on a stock GPU. No other game has even gotten my GPU remotely close to that. Now how can you say it is not taxing the system over abundantly but yet not say it is the most taxing game on the market today because of all the processing it apparently has to do. You are just contradicting yourself here, which to me right now is making no sense.
Hey everyone,
What everyone's saying about FFXIV currently being a large burden on the PC is something we've been seeing on our end as well. We brought this up with the development team and hope to have a comment from them soon.
I must agree with whats being said here. Its either the code is messy or not effecient. My 5970 even goes to full steam. If this game had crysis like grafix then i can see how it would utilize 99% of my video card. Hopefully the dev team will find a way to clean up the code vs just telling us to play at lower resolutions.
