who the heck cares about the VO seriously. as long as characters are not gonna have weird voices who cares.
I do, seriously, and seven pages of posters do minus a couple do as well. FFXIV is still the biggest joke in online gaming history. This is not really a great way to entice new players in joining the adventure. It's like a supermodel with teeth rotting out of his skull, you just don't see that.. At the end of the day it's just something superficial that doesn't really bare any weight towards the gameplay itself, but they've come so far and are trying to prove that they have their head in the game this round, so why stop at voice acting?
P.s. why is it that miqote players contribute most of the vapid statements on these forums?
yea voice was bad :(
The VO guy made me make a weird face... just didn't seem to quite fit... but I liked it overall.
SE should hire Nume Monja for all voice-overs. At the very least it should get more RL girls interested in playing :3
(<3 don't hate me Nume!! <3)
the voice make me have a thoughts "Is this hellokittyonline?"
ermahgerd this thread...
And here I thought it was just me, but I find a post dedicated to there being something wrong with the VO. Nine pages of it at that. So can anyone put their finger on what exactly is wrong with the voice? It just screams at my brain that something is off, but I can't say what exactly.
LMAO, I was thinking the same thing. They should have used Morgan Freedman or someone with a deeper voice.
It sounds like the guy who played Dr.Surresh on Heroes.
Thank you for posting this! So thrilled to have some new information. I am very happy with the look and feel of the site!

My houghts on Trailer content:
1.Uldah destroyed?
a. That totally looks like Ul'dah goes boob and I would think that those ruins are Ul'dah. Ul'dah is round and so are these ruins.
b. "They said the City-States would remain relatively the same." How do you know they were not talking about the region rather than the actual city? Just theory, but, either way that looks like Ul'dah being destroyed.
2. We shall return
a. So Lousoux sweeps us into a time bubble while the world calms from destruction and we awaken to find ourselves in a new world.
- Okay so if only a few special people were saved the world must not have completely ended seeing as we will not be stepping into a barren land with minute signs of life and no government.
- I am really looking forward to the description of the story.
3. SNOW ZONE!
a. I request that /snowball is always available for use while in any zone that contains snow.
b. YAY!!!!!

Critiques:
As one person said, it still looks like the same old game. Yes and no.
1. It would be more enticing if you added the missing genders to the other races even in concept art form so that those exploring the site can see it and learn about it. We need to make sure we consider those who have not been following the game as closely as we are, the site would be their main form of information.
2. Posting the original concept art of the races is not a good idea. This brings us back to that above statement. We want these images to be fresh and new. Perhaps more screenshots of whats on Yoshi P.'s lap top and close ups of the races.
3. The trailer was visually stimulating but the trailer as a whole was diminished by the voice actor. Get the guy who did "It all began with a stone, or so the legend says." instead! There are more qualified individuals out their who's voice is more fitting for this.
Reasons:
a. Nasally
b. Rough voice sounds forced / fake.
c. Sounds too young to be a story teller
d. Does not bring a feeling of epic-ness
e. Not convincing

I understand that not everyone will share our opinion. However for those who think another voice actor would have been a better choice, I would like to think, we are not just complaining simply for the fact of our own personal distaste, but because SE could have done better.
The fact of the matter is that there are certain types of "voices" that sell in the North American market:
1. Movie Trailer Voice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzWZTC-jovo
2. British Voice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlWeE0cRr4U
3. Sexy smooth female voice. (Sometimes, though male voices are more universal.)

I am sure there are others but, those come to mind.
If a business going to reintroduce a product that is in desperate need of a consumer base, financial gains and intrigue then you are going to need to utilize a voice over that is more marketable.
This game is already faltering do to its release reputation, SE needs to make sure every move they execute is 100% satisfactory (or at least appeals to market standards) or people will stop looking, stop being interested.
As petty as it sounds a voice over that is disliked by the majority of current clientele may most likely have a negative effect on any potential customers.
It almost seems like SE doesn't ask for external opinions on anything until it's too late. And the internal opinions are generated by employees who are too sensitive and worried about hurting the feelings of the people who work on these aspects to really give an honest opinion.
Yeah...since having "external opinions" about VA work would do...what, exactly? It's all subjective.
All strong and smart businesses take consumer reporting into account. No you cannot make everyone happy but at least getting an idea of what the general public or the gaming population appreciates is important, especially in the case of XIV during this very important stage.
Embarrassing voice acting. Just embarrassing. Not a way to kick this thing off, SE. Y'know this kind of thing makes it harder for me to sell the concept of this game to my friends when I have to show them this kind of thing, which I've had to disclaimer with "btw, ignore the ridiculously lame narrator."
Climactic /facepalm Moment: When this douche of a voice actor says "Until now..." I swear he wasn't saying it with a straight face.
This isn't to say that the presentation and flow of the CG itself wasn't utterly amazing and exciting... this amateur douche voice actor just ruins the feel. Change it SE, before you embarrass yourselves further. Will be re-watching the trailer on mute until then.
>_>;
It's just a voice actor.
I find it silly that people's like or dislike of narration has anything to do with the actual product's success or quality.
We are talking about a CGI video with narration, not the actual game.
I mean; look at SWTOR. All they ever did was fantastic CGI.
I think we better be worried about the quality of the game we hope to be playing soon, not the apparent boyish sound of a narrator. I thought he sounded fine, an interesting voice rather than the typical overly boomy introduction narrator for action movies.
Get over it people, I just hope the actual game doesn't suck.
I agree, However there goal is to catch the eyes of Newcomers and people who left. Though I don't really think "for a sneak peak on whats to come" isn't going to be the same as the Opening CGI.. I am still an awe of the Trailer, and I can;t wait for more.
For those that say " need In-game Footage.. We have Screenshots of In-game gameplay.. and I am 99.9% sure will see gameplay at Gamescom at the very latest.. =).
I thought VA was alright not the greatest, but he certainly wasn't bad he was trying his hardest to be dark and gloomy, and in some parts got my pulled into the CGI..
I do AGREE however, in Gamescom.. whatever Voice acting they have to show... Needs to be at least good.. so that it can catch the ears and eyes of the consumer.. that's what SE is after. If you get people to talk about your product, and seems interested.. then they are set to go.
What people on this forum are trying to say is that we all obviously want the game to succeed. This is a very critical time for SE, and things need to be polished and well-presented. If this trailer came out during a time where FFXIV was already successful and accepted, then whatever, everyone would know the game rocked anyway... but ppl outside of this forum that don't already play FFXIV (or that have left) pretty much look at the game as an epic fail, and this trailer's voiceover may perpetuate that idea. Thus reflecting negatively on SE's part to release a product solely based on new leadership.
You, me, and everyone on this forum can easily overlook this. But the people out there (SE's target audience) may only rag on it, which is what I'm worried about. On a marketing scale, SE should listen to its community, realize the VO is lame and change it before anybody else notices.
Yes exactly, How stupid it maybe to not play because of "1" voice... can cost this game... that's why they need to nail it at Gamescom. ( even if its all gameplay and no VA) that would do just fine.. people just wanna see how the game is.. the goal is to get people to play their game.
Its true. The VO is very important, because as excited as I am for 2.0, even as someone who already has faith that it will be awesome...the VO REALLY, REALLY takes the feel of the video down by several notches, because it makes it very hard to feel like I can take it seriously. The guy doing the narrating is the same guy who says 'coming soon' at the end, which makes you understand why his attempted deep voice is totally lame. Maybe SE, being Japanese, isn't the best judge of what a good English-speaking voice is; but they should take our advice now and find someone who ACTUALLY has a deep, serious voice, rather than have some kid fake one.
I thinks its content vs voice. I don't think the voice actor was bad. I think hes voice just didn't fit the action of the content.
Perhaps its because we often here a deep epic voice for action trailers with movies. If i start the quote:
"In a world where evil runs rampant..." I expect we hear a deeper slower action movie type voice in our heads.
The trailer was all action. So i had the expectation of a voice that would make me think Elder mage or war torn general who has fought through all of it and now has the adventurers (us) back helping once more.
The current voice actors voice would i think be much more fitting for a more Post battle peaceful world introduction. I think in my mind the higher tones tend me towards "peacful" and the deeper tones towards "conflict".
I thought it was fine, what's the big deal?
I thought I made a thread about voice acting and what they should do, guess they didn't take my advice.
Video itself was great.
The very fact that so many people have noticed speaks for itself. The voice acting was embarrassing and distracting partly because of the terrible dialogue he had to work with. In general the sound quality and choices for the trailer were poor. Great visuals though.
I honestly don't consider that voice acting more like doing a voice over... but it wasn't bad it wasn't great either... though I will nominate my ls member griss to redo it... he's got an epic voice.
It was good, not great or fantastic or anything else. It was very fitting and didn't seem out of place at all, almost seemed like the Hume in the trailer (also one of FFXIV game cover) was the one narrating. They have already portrayed the Eorzeans have an accent.
What I don't get is how anyone can say it was bad even with the difference of opinions. People really are judgmental and overcritical at times. They can't be happy they put a on par voice over for a video to build excitement they have to break it down, I do understand that not everyone pictures the same type of voice for characters from whatever it is you are playing/reading. Some people didn't like Cloud's voice in Advent Children and that guy did an excellent job portraying a liked character.
I am curious what people expect from a trailer meant to build excitement.
