This is incorrect.
You are not required to be a 2nd Lieutenant to do the final fight.
I believe the lowest rank you can be is Petty Officer Third Class.

Just finish the fight, epic epic fight
Epic cutscene. Epic ending
Nice job SE. No, great job
This fight isn't too hard at all after a few tries.
The only problem the PUG I was in had was dealing with him summoning megaflare. The 2 blms I had seem to either lose mp fast and had meteors missed. Yes there was a bard.
I was Monk/Dragoon during this group so I honestly couldn't tell what were they doing wrong below while I was attacking Darnus at the top platform.
Any suggestions?
There seems to be an issue that has arisen. Rize Kai is claiming all credit for coming up with the strategy used here when he did not. Furthermore, the video is being used as a recruitment for his linkshell, even though only two of people of the eight were from his shell.
For this reason I am removing the link to the video as this is an insult to everyone involved in that fight. Please forgive the inconvenience, as I will have another version of the video up soon.
We developed our own strat for the most part, based on a couple things picked off this thread earlier on and from recording our own fights.
Setup our PT is using for repeated wins in a row:
2blm 2brd 2whm war drg/mnk (last one can be anything melee really)
Phase 1 - tank position him, move to your safe spot and go nuts. BLMs take a pause to take out the meteors around 35%
The safe spot is VERY close to where you spawn if the tank positions him to the right diamond shape on the ground. (from battle entrance PoV) This sets up a quick access route for BLM #2. Bards, don't forget to sing for the melee once in a while, especially if you have a MNK in the group.
Phase 2 - position him as before. 1 BLM head up the far stairs and take position on the mid-platform. Nail him down to 50%. 1 WHM, keep the wind DoT on him as it sticks pretty well. You'll notice the hp ticking away. 2nd BLM start out with Flare here, if the flame DoT hits, enjoy the results. Manage MP by keeping Stoneskin on your tank as much as possible, throw a Regen on anyone that takes AoE damage from Van Darnus.
At 50% BLM 1 begins taking out meteors while you keep hitting from the safe spot. When he goes Chariot x2 into Dynamo you should be safe. MNKs can drop Fist of Wind here at this point and keep it on, it allows them to run to the healers/archers at the safe spot and recover quickly without getting killed even after getting knocked back by Chariot. Dragoons can also do this, but it's a little more difficult without the extra speed. When in doubt, hold back with the healers if you are a dragoon, you are more valuable alive than dead for the big showdown. At this stage, the 2nd black mage might need to jump up and help take out meteors. Let BLM 1 make the call as to if he/she can handle it alone. If they can, you are rewarded with a much faster takedown. If not, no big deal.
5% - He'll speak about Oblivion, that's your cue. BLM + BRD goes up to a mid platform on either side (discuss this BEFORE the fight so it is instinctive ), sleep any golems along the way. Tank + melee go to the very top of the stairs (small green area) to the right of your tank (tank pov), which is the farther staircase for the mages . WHMs split up and meet at the very top of the stairs as well, each taking a different staircase. This allows any curing that might be needed along the way.
BLM + Bard throw up MP songs and start hitting meteors as they fall. BLM, this is your job for the rest of the fight at this point. (pretty simple eh?). the Archer/Bard can throw up Stoneskin/Protect for each pairing.
WHMs, one WHM keep your wind DoT on Darnus while buffing the 4 of you for Megaflare. Drop down to a lower staircase if a cure is needed. The second WHM, pop Cleric stance if you have not already, and go to town dropping 1/2 spell on each meteors. Depending on if you have to manage your MP, cover for buffs etc etc. This makes the BLM + BRDs have a much easier job, guaranteeing them precious MP for after Megaflare.
Tank + Melee, push out as much damage as you can to stop Darnus from regenerating.
At the top, you can keep track of the damage Megaflare will do. There are 3 circles, Each meteor that makes it through will cause a circle to fill up. 1 Circle is still easy to survive, 2 becomes a little tricky, and 3... well you don't want all 3 to be filled unless you like seeing the Damage Cap get reached by Megaflare. He'll denounce he is about to destroy you, when he does start running back down the stairs. Pray you didn't get 3 full circles! (following this method we don't miss a single meteor!)
Post Megaflare:
Run back to the bottom and take position. Have the tank grab Darnus and pull him back to his spot, recreating the safe-zone for the healers/archers. This part can be a little dicey at times because Darnus is doing a bit of wandering. Once the 6 of you are back on ground level, check your HP. Call for Benediction if you need it (as I said it can get dicey while repositioning him). Don't panic, as you're on the home stretch if you've got this far and are in good shape. Stay in your safe zone, knock out the meteors if you are a BLM. You'll see that last 5% drop off before you know it.
Congratulations, and good luck!
Yey, I beat him (on my third try)! I loved the ending cutscene.
The fight is difficult until the mages/bard find the sweet spot where his AOEs will never hit you, and so long as the tank keeps Darnus returning to the right place to make the sweet spot stay in the same place. After that, as long as your mages aren't lazy, its pretty easy. It was fun and challenging. Loved it.
adding BG strat here so I can c later... ;D

What's your strategy for server congestion move? Can't hide from it :S
note Dragoons, in phase 2 he will do double chariots (double knockback) if you get hit by both the outside AoE will also hit you and kill you. It is probably best to hang out by the WHM's and after he does double chariot run in for a barrage of combos and then run back out and wait for double chariot again. Holy Dragoon's strat posted above makes this fight way easier than the double mages on platforms at start of phase 2 strat, as 2 mages is a waist of DPS on the boss.
As promised, here is the upload of our win for you all. Taken from the perspective of one of our WHM (Not me). He sent me the video and I cut the original audio. (It was a lot of us yelling in vent.) I added the official battle music for the fight from both phases.
To Kill a Raven victory video
Please enjoy.
I was tanking Darnus and he 1-shotted me for no reason. I wasn't on or near the stairs. He just teleported to the top of the stairs after summoning meteors, then teleported to me again and hit me for 9999 right after. I never went to the stairs that entire time.
It wasn't Megaflare. it was him using his lance.
As far as that pic showing where to stand goes, my party tried it and had a single issue with it: our tank kept getting bounced around too much. Darnus warping around meant he sometimes approached from different sides, flinging him around, once even bouncing him up the stairs then one shotting him with 9999 ravensbeak.
So we instead had our tank stand where the mage spot was, to the right of the black post there. If you stand to the right of the post, you can wedge yourself between it and the outside of the arena, making it so you don't move at all, perfect for tanks. at worst, darnus bounces you by being at the left side, and you quickly hit the underside of the stairs and dont move much. this made it much easier on the mages, because they didn't have to constantly adjust their distance to darnus and could just focus on the fight at hand.
Mages just stood near the front stairs, i think somewhere near the left post but not quite next to it. You'll have to find the correct distance, but once you find it its easy to keep there. :P
Melee fighters have an easier time of it too. During the 50% hp and less in the second phase, melees just need to stand near front of darnus unless they are executing a combo from behind or side. (time your combos so that you only combo behind him after hes just done his own combo.) Because you only get bounced into the wall and under the stairs, you never fly far enough for him to hit you with his lunar dynamo finish, which means you'll survive with low hp and not heal his. You can also use featherfoot to dodge one of said hits and lower damage.
It's far better than trying to featherfoot and dodge one of his hits while you run to safety at any rate.
Using this strat our party went from wiping around 30% second phase, to getting him to 11% (tank dced lol), to getting to megaflare stage (survived megaflare, wiped soon after due to chaos getting back to bottom), to winning on our third try with nary a hitch the entire fight.
