Hey, no hate or disrespect for any of the lefties out there, but if it means pushing back FFXIV even one minute further, I say...

Sorry, but I'd be fine with it in like an expansion down the line. In fact, I'd gladly make my own character ambidextrous. Just like me. :)
I'm a lefty, and I support this thread.
What about those of us who can use both arms equally well as well as mouth wield?

In all serriousness. If they can mirror the animations, then why the hell not. ;P
I think it would be a waste of resources, so no.
if its a waste of resources why not just make everyone left handed and have no right handed that way its not a waste of resources for those not caring ;3
Why do left-handed people make such a big deal about being left handed? it doesn't make any difference to me, I do not care what hand people use to do anything. Why is it some kind of absolute must that your ingame avatar be lefty just because you are?
Most people don't care and don't really even notice which and people are doing things with.
Besides, if they were to implement this, the best way to do it wouldn't be a character creation option. The optimal method would be allow you to simply equip arms in either hand. I absolutely wouldn't mind seeing it down the road, but it's not something I'd like to see them divert resources for with the launch impending.
Lol, I am a lefty for writing and I always use right one for a mouse, weapon, wiimote, or photoshop. This would be a nice idea for us want to customize our character. I don't see why my left-handed one should be off-hand only and no it shouldn't be in the character creation either.
It's not that hard to do for the dev team though. Programmers can agree that it's too easy to change.
I would give up right handed characters all together if it meant se would delete this thread
What about those of us with the innate ability of telekinesis? (Such as myself, clearly.) I want my own special animations where my equipment freely floats wherever I want them to be.
Forget all of these savages still using their hands.
Okay, it seems many people disagreed with this thread, I think it needs to go now. :3
I am a left-handed person too and I don't think I care. lol
I'm slightly Ambidextrous...does that mean I'm the impartial vote?
Left, right, it doesn't matter. If you want a leftie, play Zelda. It's a virtually useless suggestion as a whole, because not only is is extremely minor in detail, the work needed to make it happen is far from small.
My both hands are skilled for different reasons since I speak sign language. lol o.o
My left hand is mostly good for writing while my right hand is good for many different things. Weird, isn't it? hehe
Still, I don't care.
It's a simple fact that more people are right handed than left. That doesn't make one group of people better or worse than another, you just can't change that fact.
Therefore, it's not worth complaining about, because in the end, it doesn't matter which hand you use, or which hand your character uses. It's a fair bit work for something that's purely cosmetic.
Intrestingly, though in most cases I am right handed, on the keyboard my left hand is dominant- I tend to reach over to the right side of the keyboard with my left hand rather than keeping every finger where it "should" be all the time. :p
Note: I'm not against the idea, I just don't consider it important enough to divert any development resources.
It wouldn't matter to me if characters in the game were all left handed. I just don't see why the handiness of your character must mimic the handiness of your actual self. I honestly like my avatar to be as different from me as possible.
A nice idea, though I wonder how much extra data would be needed for additional animations. I suppose if it's limited to battle animations it'd be OK.
I do prefer the idea of choosing left or right at character creation, though. Real people don't get to choose, so just having the option at all is a one-up on real life. By the way, Kain Highwind is a lefty :p
Edit: If you deviate from your chosen laterality and put the weapon in the other hand (left in my case) you should get a small accuracy reduction... too complicated? Probably.
I probably wouldn't notice. I didn't even know Link was a lefty until just now. Wonder if anyone's done a study on lefty's to see if, and if so why, they're so quick to identify and feel bothered by which hand someone uses. Maybe if they put a right handed child in an environment consisting entirely of lefty's for a few years it would produce a similar effect.
Back to the topic though. Don't care either way. If the animation team has the time might as well toss it in.
I can do w/o left handed, but instead I can go for dual welding ...
jc
As i mentioned earlier, if implemented I'd rather people not be forced to pick a handiness, and instead simply be able to put their weapon in either hand slot instead.Quote:

Actually it was. It's easy to think that simply mirroring the character would be a simple option, but when you start to interact with the world and other characters, you run into tons of distracting issues.
Then again, TP didn't even need to be mirrored in the first place. The hand in which you used the Wii remote made no difference. But whatever~
It's true, but the whole idea was that you were supposed be mimicing the actions the on screen character would take. Something that wasn't really fully realized until MotionPlus came out. They mirrored the game so that the hand people typically had the wii remote (sword) in matched the hand that the character on screen held it in. It's not that it was necessary for control purposes, it just made it feel more natural for the majority.Quote:

Ok so people want to start the 'waste of resourses' BS again.
[Sarcasm]
Creating more than one race and more than one gender was a waste of resoures. We could have had ARR right now if they had just focused on one race and gender.
That grass too was a big waste of time. Why couldn't they have released ARR first and then added grass?
There are too many textures in the game. I feel ARR could have been released faster if they cut down on the amount of textures. Maybe just go ahead and make everything wireframe, so we can play ARR faster
[/Sarcasm]
Give it a rest.... Having Left handed option is a good idea and is no more of a waste of recouces than half of the other things theyre putting into the game.
As the OP of this thread you have no idea how shocked I was to see this dragged back up from the dark abyss of the forums. xD
However I think people are getting a little out of hand about this. First stop attacking each other so much, I never started this as a left vs. right thread, I started it cause I knew if I didn't I'd spend the rest of my days going "what would have happend if I had tried?" regretting not having the guts to do it.
Second, I didn't ask for left handed option cause I'm left handed and want attention I asked for it for roleplay/cutscenes only, if I can't be left handed I'm cool with it and will still play the game, just would have been cool to have the option is all.
And finaly, the games about to enter beta, do you guys really think this close to release they'ed add something like this? Calm down a little it's pretty much just a fading dream by this point, let it go and move on to fighting about something else, like 3rd set of highlights in our hair or something. XD
All the fools natrually assume every suggestion made MUST BE AT LAUNCH and therefore will delay launch. Tho, even if it was something that was put in during beta, making a left-hand option and simply mirroring right-hand animations is probably not a hard thing for them to do.
...I mean, there was no point in changing links hand in Twilight Princess. In either case, the interaction with the bow only amounts to a crosshair. Even if Link was Left handed in the Wii version, using my right hand would make no difference. Just use your dominant hand.
On the topic of the thread, like I said much earlier:
About 10 percent of the earths population is expected to be Left handed. It is simply not worth the effort for something very few people would care enough beyond a "Thanks, that was really thoughtful."Quote:
Depending on how they set up the FK/IK structure, that may mean they would have to mirror the entire character, possibly including all of the equipment, mounts, crafting tables, and the effects for spells and moves, basically doubling all the assets for characters.
It might just be better to make whole new animations for left handed characters if it where to be implemented.
It's nothing against Left handedness, it's just that it's something you need to keep in mind at the beginning.
AdventZero, I'd like you to meet my friend, Slippery Slope Fallacy. Slippery slope, meet AdventZero! you two will be best of friends, I can see it now!Quote:

Creating more than one race and more than one gender was a waste of resoures. We could have had ARR right now if they had just focused on one race and gender.
Look, the dev team has a priority list. Certain things are more important than others. Handiness, a very small cosmetic embellishment that a small number of people even care about, is not likely to be high on that priority list. The truth hurts, but that's all there is to it. There are a LOT of things that are more important than this right now.
Like that mark on meteor survivor characters? I don't think i'll be able to play the game if I didn't have that mark! right? Can say the same thing about them adding in Male Mithra, Female Roegadyn, and Female Highlanders. They didn't need to do any of that, but they did. If they didn't add Male Miqo'te, i would just continue playing female miqo'te /shrug must not be all that important to me.... therefore it must have been a waste of their and our time, in my perspective. However, it was important to many many others that they be added.
The 'importance' of having that mark, extra genders, chocobo raising, insert something else here, is pretty much equal to the 'importance' of having the ability to equip a weapon in the left hand and a shield in the right. Same with a lot of things their adding that will have no impact on the games playability.
And once again, not one of us can tell anyone else what SE says is or is not something that can be on the 'list of priorities'. Not one of them has their priority list, nor can we alter their priority list.
IMO saying it is a waste or resorces or there are more important things is an invalid reason to try to be against something.
And for the record, I am right handed, so this is not a left handed vs right handed kind of thing. I'm for the impimentation of reasonable options for players, and this is a very reasonable option for players.
Boob slider and the physics, just throwing those out. (these are cool ideas btw)
Seeing something like handedness is quirky and maybe a lot of people will like to have the option, you never know.
I'm sorry if someone has already said this, but I only glanced over the few pages this thread has created, but simply put:
When FFXIV, FFXI, WoW, Aion, Archlord, Moshi Monsters or whatever send information between your computer and the servers they use 'Packets'. These packets contain the necessary data for the server to do what you expect, this is a number of things:
Text, Movement, Character Data, Position, Rotation, etc.
ALL of your characters unique information that is constantly being changed is being sent in these 'packets', so whenever you start adding in more character customization options, armour pieces, etc. the packets become heavier as more data is added, which would in turn create 'lag' as the packets would require more time to transfer between yourself and the servers.
TLDR
The more you add, the more strain it puts on the servers creating lag.
