I'm not sure how compatible a cape would be with classes like Marauder who wear their weapons on their back. But I would like to see capes too, and half-capes (like Lightning wore).

cape with clan mark would be awesome. u get to customize clan mark also.
Realistic equipments or More fantasy equipments?
Both, obviously. Why limit ourselves to only one type.
I don't like gaudy, go fantasy but not gaudy (example of this is my opinion is homam set from XI, its baller looking btw), I don't like huge shoulder pads and epically big suits of armor, just epic looking not HUGE and GAUDY. XI did a good job of this on some gear. WoW did a crappy job of this with all gear.
I just want my great swords and my evil armor....
evil armor???
They definetely need to be alot more creative, make unique designs, not seen in the real world.
Just imagine what people Cosplaying FFXIV characters at conventions will look like... boring, you wont recognise them.
Too bad they stated in an article that there was going to be no "Vanafest" for XIV, big bummer for those who might want to go to a convention just for FF players if this game ever gets good, you can't expect us to go to PAX and other gaming conventions just to support FF if you won't give us a fanfest. You're mistake with Vanafest was only having one, cut costs in half for them and hold two one in US one in Japan, hold one in Hawaii (perfect for both sides). Vanafest 2007 was cheap as hell and still fun.
Maybe we should get both... have all class-restricted gear fantasy-based, and have a majority of non-CR gear realist-based.
Fantasy all the way, I would love to wear the Judge armor from FFXII!!
I wouldn't mind having more fantasy looking gear as long as it looks cool and concurs to the FF lore. However, I would like it to be realistic looking at the same time for great detail. Please, definetly no auras. Then you're just talking about WoW and other f2p game equips that i've seen.
You know... I'm an avid reader of Fantasy books as well as an avid gamer of fantasy games. A mixture of both is always good. Because if you think about this, if someone brought out an outlandish sword that isn't based off of actual facts in a fantasy novel they would tend to be ripped to pieces. Also fyi no matter what is used the basis of the weapons are going to be all similiar to what real life is. Wether it is two types of weapons put together as one or just an exaggeration of the original piece. IE there is such thing as a gun blade it's called a Bayonet but designed differently the buster sword is an exageration of a claymore type weapon.
So yes it's fine to pretty up some weapons to make them look "fictional or fantasy like" but to keep some perspective in the issue.
Now here is a challenge for all of you... try to come up with a completely original "fantasy" weapon that doesn't involve guns, wands, swords, bows, crossbows, maces, axes, scythes... sling shots... you get the picture. I want to see what idea's you come up with ^_^
I agree, there's nothing wrong with realistic gear, and you can have more fantasy gear and materials as well (i.e. Mythril is not a real metal people.) There are even real weapons that only work well in a fantasy setting (Gunblades are technically possible, but were never proven as effective weapons.)
Still, I like the idea of crystal mail or Genji gear being available, maybe the Lightbringer too.
I like the current art direction on all the equipment - looks great without going overboard. Bright neon armor with lightning and fire coming out of every orifice? Hell no.
Fantasy equipment in a Final Fantasy game. What a concept!
Keep a mixture of both but I think once the level cap is removed and we start heading up to 75/99 whatever we will start to see some great fantasy gear. Can't have people running around in the early levels with massive cool looking weapons now can we or what would we have to look forward to at the later levels.
I find the weapons, armor and overall appearances of the characters in this game extremely bland in comparison to its past titles and titles not in the FF genre. Seriously need to rehaul that too, or just add some stuff that actually looks cool.
We should'nt have to stare at copy/pasted recolored armor for 50 lvls its 2011. FF11 may have been able to play the limitations card but there is a hell a lot more breathing room for unique armor in this game. They are already remapping models for new gear w/ the newly introduced 25/35 gear NMs. Whats even worse than some of the reused models is the lame wands/handtohand/bow models; worst being wands/hand to hand. Least in FF11 u could stare at a good weapon and appreciate it, in ff14 i cant hardly make out what my hand to hand weapon looks like(they are too damn tiny). And wands look like a damn twig that fell off a tree....................why??? PLEASE BE ORIGINAL!!!!!!!!!!! Also way too much random gear where it only has 2-3 matching pieces then nothing else goes w/ it .......... make entire sets or make stuff that works well w/ others. Sometimes the joy of having 5 colors to chose from just makes things more cumbersome also lol.
PS please remove PINK my eyes are violated by Roegdyn in pink robes and subligara > >
The gear isn't just recoloured. Every tier has new textures, colours, and every tier of gear comes with extra embellishments that deviate it slightly from the one before it. And I think the subtle differences make sense when you consider that a crafter should be more skillful as he gets better and therefore be able to add more intricate elements to the armor/clothing, but not exceptionally so.
And anyway, I would rather have quality over quanitity. Every piece of gear in the game (with the exception of aprons) has obviously been made with a lot of care by the developers, and it's weird that you can't appreciate that, not to mention the wealth of different kinds of gears available anyway.
And I don't know what world you live in where the bows in FFXIV are ugly. They are the best kind (unassuming and actually made of logical materials, i.e., different types of wood).
And with the one exception of a Roegadyn in full pink regalia, I think all FFXIV gear is really tasteful. It's like the best aspect of the game. People don't know how to appreciate a good thing, seriously.
Only thing i said i didnt like was the tiny weapons(hand to hand) for the most part and the unimaginative wands and bows. And alot of armor is already reused i didnt say i didnt like it i just stated they are already reusing general skins. But i will wait and hope that they make more stand out gear. Maybe u should change your forum name too overly-concerned-for no-reason-forum-monkey instead of "gifthorse" people are entilted to a opinion it wasnt hurting you IRL was it?
it's a fantasy or realistic features the protection for miqo'te's tail?
Your tone was so "this is so crap" that I felt obliged to respond in kind. I like the gears as they are and can appreciate them. And even though many are reused to some degree, it makes sense for them to be reused and there's still a lot of variety anyway.
I'm not saying there should be no new gear, I just think it's weird that someone can't appreciate what we already have.
I thnk the cool stuff will appear later.. now we have "low level plain stuff"..
Some fantasy items would be cool, but I think with expansions we'll get the most interesting looking equipment ^^ I can't wait to see what AF would look like, if they include it. ToAU brought some very nice looking gear in my opinion, I would like some fancy high level stuff like that. And please no more stuff like coatees, though I'm probably in the minority there :S Maybe in the future they can consider an alternate covered up version, I like how the male version looks, just don't want my jangleys on display!
My vote is for more fantasy equipment. We already have enough realistic looking equipment, now it's time to get creative and make those weapons and armor we see and think "I HAVE to have that!" because it's so damn cool looking.
Gifthorse has a point too, from tier to tier the same kind of piece of armor has subtle differences including boldness of color. The dye on lower tier items is a bit faded compared to some of the higher stuff using the same tier of dye. Honestly how much different do you people want a Cotton Robe to look from a Velveteen Robe? Same type of clothing, different material
I think we can all agree that we don't have enough leather with buckles, buckles, more buckles, and the occasional zipper.
