do you need to complete the "united we stand" quest to be able to get the new gc weapons and armor or am i missing something?

They gave you increased spirits within DMG and 120 extra HP which combined is a good enmity ceiling boost, along with the 40 accuracy which pretty much covers the accuracy needed in full party to land your combo's 100% on everything but garuda (and probaby enough for garuda with acc food). This sword is a big increase in enmity even if its not dirrectly listed as a stat on the weapon itself.
