There's a weird trend with Square where the finalist/runner-up designs are way better than the winners.

Eh, that's subjective. I will admit though that I do like that gunblade and both of the sword/shield runner-ups quite a lot.

If they manage to pull it off with some degree of elegance, I'll definitely use it (so long as it's dyeable).

Almost all of the grand prize winners' weapons are basic and boring. Especially GNB - it's a joke. I like finalists' designs tho.
