Reaper Megathread

Got to 80 on this today. This is the worst issue. Soul reaver should stay up unless we use one of those 2 skills or the tome runs out. I constantly forget to do the debuff on single taget fights and i go to reapply it before using a soul reaver action and then i loose the skill

Yeah the Soul Reaver stacks disappearing on any ability use feels like a bug, but it encourages thinking ahead which I like. Also enjoy the debuff for the same reason, I need a job with more management since SMN was dumbed down. The job's pretty fun so far imo. If I played melee at all before EW I might find it boring but I'm not even 80 yet so it's all new and flashy to me.

I get it about Soul Reaver I don't rly like that you lose them either.
On the other hand, the Job is already so insanely easy that maybe there should be something punishing people for not paying any attention or just spamming buttons?

It doesn't bother me that much but I do get it.
At the same time I kinda also feel like does it really need to be even easier?

It wouldn't bother me if they made it so you didn't lose the stacks but I also think that players should be able to make the wrong choices and screw up, when you essentially can't screw up unless you're doing it intentionally then I think it becomes a bit ridiculous.

i don't really see the problem with soul reaver stacks, just combo Gluttony and Blood stalk with Gibbet and Gallows like the oGCD-GCD combo they are and that's it.

Yeah, I like Soul Reaver as is tbh. If you mess up your mudras you don't get them refunded to you. Just be mindful when Soul Reaver is up. It becomes second nature eventually.

Now that I'm 80 on RPR, the job has really grown on me. I like the flow, love the mobility, and I'm a big fan of having a phase that speeds up/alter your rotation a la MCH. Very excited for Enshroud at 90 with all the button action.

RPR will be my first 90 :)

As a side note, if you want to test it you can go to the PvP area and test it on a dummy.
All of the Enshroud skills are there.

With Death Design I usually do 1 for mobs and 2 for bosses.

Basically if you know it won't last 30 seconds don't waste a GCD on reapplying unless you want a safety cushion.

Overall the job is satisfying and scratches that Dark Knight itch I've always had.

It doesn't read like they should disappear on using any ability, it'd be nice if that at least was more clear. I've run into a few situations while leveling where I kill one mob and have to use the Reaver stack before debuffing the next mob if it's too far to pull in advance. Feels kinda bad but it's also a rather niche situation that doesn't matter a great deal.

Toolkits while usefull in the most part they are times they don't told you everything or are not very accurate, thats why a dumy and some experimentation always go hand to hand with read them to fully understand whats going on, yeah having that mention on then would be nice like many other stuff in several skills across the jobs buuuut we all know how is SE with that.

The 'of Death' abilities are awful. They exist to be annoying and literally nothing else. If those abilities were removed, the only time you'd care is if an add spawned mid fight (or trash pulls). This isn't a situation like WAR's storm's eye, where it basically exists to provide some extra texture to what would otherwise be a 1-2-3 rotation, this is Mutilate, but for Reapers. You throw it up whenever it falls off (or is about to) and otherwise forget about it.

Those 2 abilities and soul sow represent the worst aspects of Reaper's design in terms of buttons, and having reaver fall off for doing anything wrong is the reason I hated Tsubame-Gaeshi's implementation.

The job quests for Reaper I felt were ok. I'm rather disappointed they didn't have more development on the big bad you fight. Was it bad? No. But it could have been better. I did appreciate how vampiric it was so that was cool. And you got some good lines to choose.

The story is quite forgettable.

I thought it was one of the best stories, especially considering they had to deliver it within 10 levels. It was very straight-forward, but not in a bad way, and I enjoyed the brief but ferocious character development. There was even a quest named Dark Days... It's fate!

I wonder if it'll actually calm down like it did with SAM, becaues lol.

I saw one other dps the entire first day that wasn't Reaper, one.
And it's more or less the same still.

Edit: Getting synced on Reaper is kinda bad tbh, I got Garuda in leveling roulette and got synced to lvl 46.

Just damage debuff + 1 2 3 combo?

Perhaps a bit too empty at lvl 46?

I agree. I think around level 78 is when it gets actually fun. Just made it to 80 today, dreading going on leveling roulette and losing skills though.

Oh and to the people above mentioning DRK refuges, they're right! RPR even came with a few skills named for FFXI DRK scythe ones. It was meant to be.

Lvl 50 is like playing Lvl 50 BLM. At levels 50 and 60 it kinda trains you to be a bad Reaper since you do a 180 in playstyle at 70 and up. Gibbet and Gallows require you to commit to your attacks otherwise you lose the Reaver buff.

I think after a few months the Reaper hype will die down and you'll see people that main the job.

Getting this to 80 and finishing the job quests, they dropped quite a lore bomb. Also, I neglected to mention I like the Lemure instance music, reminds me of FF7's sector 6.
Also, this is glammed up Van Helsing style which makes it look all the better and I can't wait to get this to 90...

Oh for sure it will.

Many will drop it once the 'New Toy' smell wears off.

Me personally am not a fan of the edgy aesthetics of the class, but that didn't stop me from trying out the new class on launch weekend like everyone else and leveling it a bit in dungeons.

But i've already moved on from it after a couple days already, never liked Melee DPS and Reaper certainty is one.

Reaper is incredibly satisfying to play. It has the advantage of being designed from the ground up for this expansion, and it all comes together quite nicely especially in the 86-90 range. The core gameplay mechanics are relatively straightforward, but it doesn't feel like you have any downtime, especially with how frequently your burst window comes up in later levels. I'd play it for the gap closer alone, it just has so much versatility. I can definitely see the appeal of playing melee dps.

It's worth noting that the Mark of Death debuff stacks to something over a minute if you really want to, so it's fairly simple to manage.

The final instance's beginning was pretty good. I was really expecting reaper's lv 80 quest ended with

Orcus faking his last breath, then popping out of his body to attempt to take control of ours. That, or attempt to fake his death and after Drusilla walks up, Orcus would hold her at the Scythe and have us surrender ourselves. That's when our Avatar pops out and says "no", and then Enshrouds us, which is where we learn our capstone skill as we beat the guy up again.

Unfortunately, that didn't happen as I expected. Apparently we were just that strong that we just destroyed them pretty quickly. Felt a bit anticlimactic to be sure. xD

Arcane crest feels pretty good. It's strong enough to be up for most raidwide and targeted attacks that you would use it often, but not overly strong where you can become the next tank.
I won't lie, reaper felt a bit plain at lv 70 and lv 80, but the fundamentals of the job is easy to grasp. I love the Hell's Ingress and Hell's Egress / Threshold mechanic animation. Feels really good to pop out and run around with the weapon.

I did test to see if the Threshold would immediately place us at [Location A] if [Location A] is much higher from [Location B] without a direct path back, but being too far away will force us back to the ground. it's still a ground travel, which is a bit immersion breaking from the 'traveling through the void' and all. It is what it is though.

Hell's Ingress and Egress drives me crazy because the hotkey to warp back isn't the same as the original warp, and I hope they change it

Bit of forewarning that Hellsgate snapshots your current position until you reappear and has no iframes. Be careful using it when avoiding AoEs or cleaves in fights. Regress also has double the range as Hellsgate. 30y.

I very much enjoy the Castlevania Dracula vibes I get from it with warping behind the boss and back again. It's very *NOTHING PERSONAL KID*.

Dbl harpe is possible if you back into a wall which I like if you need to be at range for a while.

I'd treat it like Elusive jump But with more control.

I still think Macro'd Shukuchi is still the best dash in the game. Hellsgate is great because of the fakeout you can do. It's a monster in PvP both as an ambush and as an escape option.

No opinion yet on what tuning the class might later need, but it is the most fun I've ever had on a melee DPS in FFXIV.

Good chance for it to be a main choice for me.

Yeah low level reaper is not exactly dripping with excitement, the job at max is a blast though.

I like it the way it is. Sometimes you want a leap forward then leap back. Other times a leap back and then leap forward.

The consistency is there - it's just with which direction rather than which step. I prefer it this way over how it's been done elsewhere.

Agreed. The current setup for Hell's Ingress/Egress is extremely intuitive. Snapshot or not, I've had a couple of extremely close calls where the ability has just saved me on pure reflex when I'm just learning a new mechanic. This is literally Tracer movement, except without reversing damage in the process (maybe next expansion). S tier.

I just got them on Shift 2 ( forward ) and shift 3 ( backward ).

LOVE this job so much. The aesthetic of skills, the void warp, the weapon, the transformation, the swushh swyshh sounds when you attack, the mini TBN. I had high expectations for Reaper and it turned out even better. The only annoying part (visual) is the lack of weapons and especially good looking ones. Some of them look too bulky.

I'm very satisfied with the rotation. The building and spending of two resources reminds me of DRK. While I'm not usually a fan of positionals, this time you can choose when you use those skills as they are not a part of the main combo. They instead combo with the oGCD skills in a unique way and I didn't find it hard to get used to using those skills together. It kind of feels like you are dancing with your demon.

I've defaulted to keeping the weapon hidden when sheathed, simply because I dislike how they look when folded. Hey, if I can glide through rifts using power of the void, it makes sense to pull scythes out of Hammerspace.

The AF scythe looks fantastic, and the starter one isn't too shabby until you get to it.

Imo they take up too much space, I also don't like the cloak on the artifact gear altho I also don't like cloaks in general in MMO's.
It feels too much like your character is a rectangle of cloth and you can't see them unless you look at their front.
Feels like the whole design is hidden from your sight.

That one seems to be the exception to the rule. As far as I've seen, virtually every other scythe has part of the blade snap off, such that it looks more like an axe when sheathed. The token scythe is another exception, although it doesn't look like a scythe at all.

The starter one is great, though. Easily beats out most of the chainsaw ones that you end up with while levelling.

I only like the starter Scythe, Moonward for looking like a buzzsaw and primarily the promotional Death Scythe for the Collectors's Edition which is also the scythe used by Orcus in the Job Quest for Reaper.

Soulsow/Harvest Moon I only like between pulls and after the end of your Enshroud burst. Most of the time I forget the skill is even there.

Yeah so far I'm in agreement there. But I've yet to do the MSQ so I don't know if better shows up after 80. The ones I have seen thus far all look too 'magitech' and not enough 'scythe'. Given the class lore that makes sense - but it's not the style I like.

My reaper is level 85 atm, it plays a LOT better once I got it to 80. The shroud really livens it up, it is by far imo the easiest melee. You get a lot of freedom. The only thing you need to worry about is keeping your debuff up and not capping same as most things except your only positionals you pretty much will always have true north for when u cannot hit em.

There is virtually no ogcd management at all.. 2 buttons to push and your shroud is all gcds so it really is easy peasy. Really fun, love the aesthetic it makes my DRK heart happy.

I definitely love the Reaper. My only issue with it, at the moment, is how much it annoys me that Shroud Gauge and Enshroud are Lv80, as that makes half the game-play identity of the Reaper be locked behind post-ShadowBringers... Reaper still plays well at Lv70-79, but it feels iffy Lv60-69 and not at all that good at Lv51-59 HeavensWard levels...

like.. true, Reaper does function, and play well enough, at Lv70 and Lv60... but, it does not feel well.
I just mean how it feels to play, as I slowly strip away more and more of its identity, as I drop down in levels and into older content... some of the jobs feel like they lose their identity less at Lv70 and Lv60, than what Reaper does, while half its identity locked at Lv80 drives me up a wall for a personal reason.
but those little pet peeves of mine aside, I think that Reaper feels good and I definitely like it.

Can confirm. Been a DRK since HW and played basically nothing else until the end of Shadowbringers (swapped once we got the job action trailer for GNB and then dropped tanking for RPR)

They won't change it, It would make zero sense if they did. You just have to memorize which ability is forwards and which ability is backwards, takes some getting used to but I don't see them changing it.

My problem is I almost never use the reverse one, that's a muscle memory I'll need to adapt to. It'd be kind of nice if it was just one button that teleported you in the direction your pressing but I imagine there's some limitations there

My only thing I could wish be better for reaper is if Soulsow/Harvest Moon rewarded some gauge when used. It's a high potency but wish it gave just the usual gain on ability. Didn't read the forum if anybody else mentioned, but I absolutely love this class. This is literally my only thing I dislike about the class

I think Harvest Moon should have some synergy with Crest, Harpe or Circle. Either allowing the use of Immortal Sacrifices for free HMs(using 1 stack or more) before expending on Harvest, If crest breaks you proc Harvest Moon and get the Regen or have Harpe give a percentage to proc Harvest Moon akin to Firestarter procs from BLM.

Soulsow/Harvest Moon is the only skill I don't like at all. Which is a shame since the charge animation badass.
