Mentor Changes - Why 1500 Comms?

Well, there's a separate set of requirements for crafter/gatherer mentors that don't require commends, so... And RPing isn't something you can mentor, outside of joinging an RP-focused FC and helping newbies get comfy with it (not exactly a "one-off" task).

If you're doing dungeon duties, killing stuff, etc. enough to think you should mentor people in battling, then yes, you should be leaking commends. I only started earlier this year, playing primarily DPS, and have almost 400. Under the current (old) system, I could be a mentor! That's stupid, I'd be a terrible mentor, many duties I've only done once (if that!). Under the new one, I'll not be eligible, as is perfectly correct, but should be hitting 1500 about the time I've been here enough to *maybe* consider it. On the other hand, I'm close to hitting the eligibility for crafter/gatherer mentor, and that seems about right given the time I spend on it. Won't be taking up that option myself quite yet even though I'll probably get the option within the next few weeks, because I do still count myself as a noob and would feel wrong helping people who have probably been at it longer than me, but for experienced folk who genuinely play the game prioritising that, they're not reliant on irrelevant commends and can just jump on in, don't worry.

I have thousands of comms but there are duties that I'm not very familiar with, and some that I've literally never done, not even once. On the other hand I was clearing Savage raids well before hitting 1500 comms. I can provide advice for a few jobs, but my comm count doesn't really say anything about me as a mentor.

The NN population is pretty diverse. If you've been playing for a few months, you'll have more experience than some of the novices in it. Common questions posted might ask about how to unlock dye/glam, how to change jobs, how to unlock mounts, etc. Some of these things have nothing to do with comms at all. I think it would have been better to keep a general low level mentor status with a requirement of 300 comms and then have a higher level mentor if mentor skill was a concern. Even in this case, I don't think the high level mentor should have a higher comm requirement, it should be based on something else, like having an EX clear or something.

1,500 is not too much i think.
When the system was introduced it was made way too easy for people to become mentors, so many have no clue like at all what they are doing nor make an effort to help new players.
I get people like titles and such but myself i am fine helping without a title. Honestly players just use the system for rewards

So what do you need the crown for anyways if all you ever do is camp out Limsa and pretend to be another fictional character with your already fictional character? Or is it more of a "but I wanna feel special with the icon hurrdurr" kinda thing?

You're correct with this thought. An uncomfortable majority of players want the mentor crown just for show, or 'name glamour'. I was lured into wanting to unlock the status because I liked the idea of new players coming to me and asking for help or advice. So for months I looked forward to finally meeting the requirements to unlock it and I did. But around that time I found out that the mentor crown was pretty much a meme and that most mentors were actually jerks that had expectations that were too high for people who didn't understand the game as well as they did. You know, taking out aggression on sprouts and all that. Which is why I don't really toggle my mentor status on these days. I'm trying not to go on a rant so that's all I'll say about that.

IMO the mentor system is broken right now and should be forgotten about because in my experiences, no one takes it seriously anyway. And this has been said a lot in the forums already but I'm going to say it again. You don't need a crown to help people. Just help them, give advice, be a nice person.

You do need the crown to access the NN and to reach a larger number of people in need though. Not every mentor is going to use the status for its intended purpose, but let's not understate its value as a helping tool. Getting rid of the mentor system is a crazy idea that will hurt the game.

Out of curiosity, why is it that those who dislike the mentor system just leave it? Why not work to improve it?

I can't speak for everyone else but I guess I was kind of heartbroken so to speak. So I didnt want anything more to do with it. You've got a point though. Working to be one of the good eggs is something I gave up on that I shouldn't have.

Why you need do all 3 jobs quest the tank, healer, and dps job. You should only have to did one of them. Means there forcing ones to play all 3 job types.

Well seems pretty fair requirement for become a mentor now. Has see far too many mentor who is Mentor is in roulette just leaving after wipe or leave after see is extreme. Mentor is suppose to has knowledge with basic for dps, healer and tank to tell how to help and improvement for new people to clear content.

I usually tell people to read guide or advices after end of dungeon, if they are doing poorly in run and tell them can be cruel and harsh in dungeon/savage with some people.

Is this a serious question?
Because the answer is very simple: So you can give advice to people no matter what role they're playing. Playing a tank is different from playing a healer from playing a dps. Having personally experienced each role at least once gives you a better idea what you need to look out for and how to give advice to people who are playing this role.

Your experience as a maschinist doesnt really help all that much with giving advice on how to play a healer, since they need to watch out for other things than a dps.

It seems reasonably to me that they'd expect a mentor to have at least a basic knowledge of all 3 roles - and you're not forced to do anything. You dont need to be a mentor if you dont want to.

I think the problem is that not everybody solo queues, so it's slower to build comms. Most of the time I do roulette I ask if people in my FC and linkshell want to join and most of the time people do, which results in no comms.

Plus people give comms for completely arbitrary reasons and I am guilty of it. It could be they've said something funny or made the run entertaining, they have a glamour I like, a funny name, at random because I wasn't paying attention and so on. Sure I comm people I think deserve it, had a positive attitude, tried or did a good job, but if your reasons can vary depending entirely on a whim based on your experience in the group.

I don't think it's a reliable measure for something like mentors to indicate they have the knowledge and experience and also excludes those who do have the knowledge and experience but not enough comms.

just to be fair, new sprout need more responsible mentor to guide them through.

honestly I dont think 1500 is that hard to achieve. Furthermore comms are not tanks/heals exclusive, DPS gets comms too, especially in high end raid like savage and ex. me and my friend also give comms to dps who give heals/tanks the least trouble and still dish out decent dmg.

Being a mentor require great deal of patient, just take 1500 comms as a test of patient. cheers to all mentors out there o/
