Just need to point out that in the same vein laptops have been modernized to game, so have computers with proper fans with barely noticeable noise and cooling.

Because I can use my laptop to do my college stuff and I can carry it to the college. They're convenient to use even though in some aspects they are less than desktop...
Some people value portability, or have room constraints. This is where I fall under.
I'm more surprised someone would ask this in 2018 when reasonably sized, high-end notebooks using desktop CPUs and GPUs have been the standard for a few years now.
Needed to update my old Tower but didn't have the funds at the time (or skill/help) to make a custom PC tower, old PC was running on Windows XP with 80G hardrive with I think Gefore 550, a friend/co-work just built themself one & was getting rid of their labtop for cheap (like under $700 for a near brandnew gaming 1, Acer Aspire, he even gifted me Skyrim on steam cause it was gona be my goal to try it with mods as I couldn't do that on my old PC... like even play it) so thats the one I have & been enjoying it since, acording to my more PC skilled friend (diff person) all it needs is a bigger Ram card & geforce 1080 & it will still be good for a few more years... which should give me time to save & get a custom Tower built by 2020
I play ff14 on my PS4 btw (even used it to type this)
I don’t know.. I always tend to think that people choose what works best for them. Good computers are expensive, so if a laptop is more convenient for important things like work/school, maybe that’s what they go with.
