Well that's so you can spread out your purchases to cover all your alts.
My apologies, but based on previous bonus artbook minion codes those all expired. If we're basing it off of previous standard operations, then this is a change, no?
I'm not saying it's a good thing, but pointing out that it's another indication of what they're planning.
Here's the two products that don't expire, instead they have a disclaimer on the product itself that any date could be added.
The Wind-Up Hraesvelgr minion with the Scars of War artbook
Wind-up Nidhogg from the Far Edge of Fate OST
It's not really a related thing, whereas you made it sound like one affected the other. Being able to extend the expiration date isn't nearly as (if at all) anti-consumer as to what the focus of the thread is; which is the change from account distribution to single character distribution.
Soooo, what's next?
I guess the 5.0 expansion Collectors Edition stuff will be for only one character, too?
I apologize, I didn't realize that was the case since I typically just input the code asap. These threads about the Symphony BD and this were how I found out that they started to make this type of change.
My intent in commenting on it wasn't to state that they were caused by each other but that it looked like it was an indication of how the company wanted to start distributing these bonus item codes. No expirations, make them for single characters. Possible way to differentiate a bonus code minion from purchasing from the mogstation (mogstation minions are account-wide right? I know some mounts are not and those that are account-wide are more expensive.)
NA page got ninja updated too.
Got a reply from SE support, but it's not good news and implies all future bonus items will also be one character only:

Thank you for contacting the Square Enix Support Centre.
In response to your recent query regarding the use of item codes on your account,
We would firstly like to apologise for any confusion on the use of codes or if you have felt misled at any point. This is not our intention nor our aim.
However, we cannot change the wording on the Store or influence this. If you are looking to obtain a refund, please reply back to this message so we can arrange this. Having said that, we would like to confirm that the codes will continue to only apply to one character and this will also affect the Wind-Up Yotsuyu minion code included with your other order.
Finally, if you have any feedback relating to this issue, please post this on the Square Enix Official Forums.
If you have any other queries, please contact us again. We apologise once more for any inconvenience caused.
So, from what I can gather, item codes are now:
-Expires, but are account-wide
or
-Does not expire, but are single character.
Personally, I rather they stick to the does-not-expire model. I'm tired of exclusivity locked bonus items with merchandise. I hope they re-release the older items, too, like wind-up Dalamud and Wind-up Bahamut.
I wont buy any merchandise from their store anymore and if they do that to the collectors edition too then I will just buy the normal version..I am just sick and tired of all this greed..
I really hope that people will not fall for that and buy more than one item to have it all on their alts..because if they do they just show that they can get away with that. Vote with your wallet and just buy one please. :/ Who knows how far they will take that..
I've not been able to purchase the CE upgrade for Stormblood just yet despite enjoying the CEs specifically for the nice bonuses they give. But if 5.0's CE ends up being only for one character to claim the extra goodies... yeah, no. Not ever getting it. This is just becoming plain greedy and driving a wedge into any trust most of us still had for SE as a company.
Like I said before, gotta ask Yoshi-P directly or post on the Japanese forums for it to get noticed.
Simply a topic title being: "※本アイテムコードは、ご利用時に選択いただいた1キャラクターに対してのみ、インゲームアイテムが付与されます"
With links to the JP store pages. Then a comment of saying "Why is this happening?": なぜこうなった?
Should be enough to get a discussion going there. Unless there is a thread on the Japanese General Discussion going on now.
Once you do that, someone on the Japanese team will see it, and possibly comment on it.
Once that happens, THEN you'll see someone from the US Community Team make a post about it, which is just a translation post.
You must have got very lucky, it's not according to SE:

First emotes, now this.
Ugh...
I'm guessing it's two completely different rules surrounding this based on which site you use. The code for NA(and possibly EU) is 20 characters long. Is it the same on the JP one?
Plus, the leaflet that I got is on a page roughly 4.5inch x 5.5 inch.
Forget the minion; I want Yotsuyu's gear to glamour up my BLM!
Emails are now going out let you know the deal has changed.
Almost 2 weeks late to "Clarify."
I was able to cancel my preorder straight from my orders but some people said they needed to contact support to do it for them.
Haha, wow, this is BS.
I won't be cancelling my pre-order this time because of this but if this does continue to the next one I'll probably just start buying my FFXIV artbooks from a third-party. I'd almost assuredly get better & cheaper shipping on them then what SE is offering (It's gonna be 80$ CAD total).
While I do mainly play one character, I do have multiple characters and I want to have as many items as I can across them. I'm not happy about the cashshop outfits/minions being character-locked either but this is getting absurd. I'm not going to purchase two 40$ artbooks just for one minion.
You already can get it cheaper just look at amazon Japan. $10 shipping vs $40. Even then I will wait for the eventual sale of the artbook.
If SE doesnt have the courtesy of saying how its going to be at time of pre-order, then I wont pre-order, and wont buy at full price either.
Same price less value should mean lower cost.
"But its just a digital minion" Exactly so why limit it to one character now?
I complained about this when I found out about the Eorzea Symphony orchestrion going to only one character on an account. I understand that there might be "Server Strain" or whatnot, but this doesn't make much sense, especially when we're already paying the price of a complete game to get the bonus items.
It's shady business and I don't think I'll be buying the artbook now if this is the kind of practice moving forward, especially when at the time of pre-ordering, for both the CD and the artbook, the bonus code was said to be account wide. I have characters I'd like to have these bonus items now, and it's extremely annoying that I have to purchase them more than once to have access to them.
Awe, I was thinking of getting this book >:
If they gave us more shipping options, then it wouldn't be as bad. But when they only give us the $40 shipping amount...something isn't right. I cancelled my original pre-order of the Shiva Statue because I also wanted the new art book and music disc...for all three of those items, I'm paying the EXACT same shipping as if I was buying just one of those items.
I didn't see it from the live letter happened but they posted it for the digest.

Yup, thanks Square. Haven't laughed that hard in ages.
I have no words for how amazingly stupid that is.
They're just getting greedier and greedier.
I can buy that there's difficulties sending things through the mail to characters. If I create an alt, for instance, my mailbox is flooded immediately with various items.
What I can't buy, though, is the lack of progress towards a proper account bound system. Why not just flag accounts as being either eligible or ineligible for various promotional items and then add a specific NPC in-game where we acquire them if our accounts are flagged accordingly?
They've known about these limitations for a while, after all. You'd think with having to pay an additional sum of money to even have access to alts the game would take steps to be a bit more alt friendly...
It really feels more and more like SE is trying to get us off making Alts.
