What is your view on RP or ERP and why is it so taboo within the community?

What people do with their own time doesn't concern me unless it actively harasses other players. I roleplay irregularly these days, but it's a fun little side hobby to partake in, especially during long patch droughts. Same stance on ERP. You do you, boo. Just keep it out of say and occasionally miss tell in the novice network so we can all snicker (this happens. It's amusing every time).

There's literally an entire server the community has dictated to be "the RP server". People don't have a problem with it in general.

Like others have said, when people bring it into pugs when we're all just there to complete whatever duty and get out is when it gets irritating. You don't need to macro every single ability to say something edgy unless it's some sort of "i just used an important cooldown" indicator. Especially ninjas, and you know why.. You also don't need to bring your character's fears and flaws into a duty and make it more difficult for everybody.

As for ERP... pretending to have "intimate moments" in a T rated video game is weird no matter how you try to sell it. Don't do it in public.

This reminds me of a time when I RPd with a friend in Gridania in say-chat and our characters were having a "deep conversation". After our RP session was over, I noticed there were several strangers who had gathered a little further away to watch us and one of them started cheering and clapping to us. It felt like we had just performed a play to them. XD Was fun.

Think of it as like actual public space. It's perfectly normal to talk, hold hands, laugh and joke. But its not a good thing and pretty illegal to have sex. Some people do it for the thrill and the taboo. Doesn't make it right.

I am not the one reporting people, I said and I wish people would read today, you shouldn't be surprised if you get reported and then come to the forums and complain about it. This entitlement of we're role players and can do whatever we want, should be the measurement for everybody then, meaning if you bother somebody with it, especially with ERP in regular chat since this game isn't X rated, you can not say that it was unjust. I even mentioned in my first post that I seriously don't care what people do, as long as it isn't in my face, and yes I do reserve the right to say that, just like RP'ers think they have the right to tell us, that they are allowed to do it anywhere and we should just black list them or walk away.

You'd be hard pressed to find a roleplayer who would disagree that ERP shouldn't be in public chat. Generally people who do that are shunned by the majority of the community, and we even report them ourselves.

But reporting someone simply for roleplaying in /say is frivolous, and SE frowns on frivolous reports.

No one should be surprised about getting reported, if they harass another player. Normal RP doesn't count as harassment, just like people simply talking to each other near you doesn't count as harassment.

No one is saying that RPers are entitled to do whatever they want, they can do whatever any normal players wants to do, including normal RP. The majority of the RPers also agree that ERP should be done in private channels.

If a few RPers just decide to walk up to you, and start RPing right next to you, as a way to harass you, then you're in the right (unless you happen to stand near a RP hotspot, but I don't think those are as common outside of Balmung). If you simple walk past a few RPers, and one just happens to have just typed text in /s, I wouldn't really see that as "in your face".

As someone on Balmung, Kugane and Ul'Dah already have multiple conversations overlapping in /say, /em, /yell & /shout. Chat filters are easy to set up so various groups manage to exist in relative harmony unless one group is going out of their way to prod at the other group(s) :P

Yeah, I mean SE created the RP flag so RP'ers could easily get together, most of the games QOL features are designed with RP in mind, its easy to see SE loves RP'ers. Despite my opinions against FFXIV I've always told people that like RP that this is the place to go. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that won't admit FFXIV is a RP'ers dream come true. SE more then likely is just gonna toss reports against RP'ers in the bin. Save for the extreme public ERP displays like you said but that's another story.

I was an rp'er back in 1.0 and my take on ERP has always been "don't ask, don't tell, keep it in private and behind closed doors". ERP can happen and be kinda fun if done right. By right and this is when it can be taken to the side of being taboo and frowned on. The question being "Is their a reason on a RP level for the ERP to even happen?" Its the difference of the characters being in a long term relationship that suddenly took a deeper meaning where ERP can be valid. To the wrong side of what amounts to a character just standing half naked in the Quicksands wearing a giant "F*** Me" sign around their necks. Or the ones who are just as bad and choose to go right to out of character for it. The "looking for cyber" players I blacklist without a second thought.

Sometimes I like to watch people RP in say chat in my server. Sometimes it's cringey, other times it's really interesting.

Man, I rped in the golden age of rp which was AOL chatrooms, as such, rp has come quite a long way obviously. Admittedly, I don't do very much of it at all recently, but I had some fun in a fc that did back in 2.0. I think people should be free to do it when they want how they want to. It's a great mode of self expression, and though reading through this thread I see examples of not so great usage, i.e. "This is my original the character do not steal, he's edgy and a jerk so I'm a jerk to everyone." That's not cool, and causes unnecessary drama.

As for erp...
I'd say do it somewhere where people aren't.

If you wanna RP, go for it. Whatever makes you happy as long as you're not getting in other people's way. No complaining here. However, ERP should be saved for quiet areas and the tells. I don't want or need to see that.

This whole thread makes me happy I'm on Leviathan. I've never had anyone pull the rp in dungeons crap, and if I did I'd probably just leave. I don't mind RP at all as long as it isn't interfering with getting things done. As to ERP, keep it to yourself and your partner(s). You wouldn't want to be walking along in a mall and see people having sex in the aisles.

I think ERP is pretty pathetic, but i dont knock them either. And before some low brow pleb who cant use critical thinking says i just knocked ERPers, i only gave an opinion i was asked to give. But i dont knock ERPers if i see it or if i know someone is an ERPer.

I'm glad this thread exists. It explains a lot of our deep, secret sides that we might never have the chance to explain again. I'll just keep it to ERP because it'll be the focus of my post.

I have nothing against ERPs. In my opinion, I think we should experience ERP with a friend we trust, and not limited to one's girlfriend / boyfriend. By doing ERP with a friend you trust, it helps in finding your identity through the more delicate situations in life, and thus make you whole. It helps build confidence to your gf / bf as well.

ERPs also help us stabilize and move on from the more troubled times; a delicate touch to the skin from someone you trust means a lot more than words. You'll realize that, through gestures of affection from your trusted friends, you are special and you are precious, and it helps in learning to love yourself! And then, when you have your bf / gf, you'll be in a much happier state of mind because you got your head wrapped around things, and for the significant other to acknowledge it would be a godsend for me; I am certain our lives will be much happier because it's a clear sign of trust and loyalty that transcends society. <3

Generally speaking though, All ERP chit-chats must be done privately. Don't give the impression or spread the voice that you're doing an ERP to the public. Then, you'll be golden.

I don't RP I'm too shy, but I'd love to watch some. Sadly I've NEVER seen any rp in parties.

Personally don't care either way if people do, doesn't hurt me. However, I'd appreciate it if they could refrain from doing it in DF groups simply because it tends to drastically slow the run down, and I'd especially appreciate them not doing it on my front lawn.

I still haven't figured that one out.

For me, it depends. If the RP is just casual and tasteful, sure go for it. Have fun. If your the kind who RPs to an extreme (Ice mage, Healer who is a pacifist, Ninja who has forsaken Mudras) then no, get out. More so if your the type to macro a shout for every skill and action. When it comes to ERP, again I can tolerate it but if you start getting into the hot and heavy, keep it in your whispers/linkshell/house

I don't mind RP at all, I welcome it. But here is the thing, no matter how you look at it, RP is magnet for drama and I think the drama itself is what gives the bad name and not so much the act of roleplaying. As for ERP, all cool beans but please keep it to your tell/personal shell or house or whatever.

I'm not creative enough to RP, or desperate enough to engage in ERP. XD

More power to those who enjoy that sort of thing, but its just not for everyone. As long as RPers aren't dragging their feet through my DF groups, Idcwhat they do. Lol

Reason why i hate RP'ers. i've only encountered 4 of them actively in the game. and every time they've been a tank/healer and have paused multiple times in dungeons to talk. like i don't want that. i don't want to talk to any of you. i want the dungeon done with little to no interaction.

Simple, i don't waste people's time when in dungeons. i talk to people when we are out of dungeons. If i'm doing a dungeon for exp/progression/weekly etc then i don't want to waste time constantly by typing. I have no problem if people would RP chat when others are loading, or after the boss is dead or when someone is watching a cutscene. but if you hold up the flow of the dungeon, that's just being a dick

I have never seen people "RP" in dungeons before unless they were a full premade group for an in-character run. The common mentality I've seen the thousands of RPers I've interacted with has been "don't do IC runs when you PUG or DF or RF content. And if you plan to do an IC run coordinated on PF, put that in your description or better yet, password lock it." A significant portion of RPers are already shy or socially awkward. I'd be amazed if they even spoke in a dungeon beyond the standard "hi/hello/hey" during protect casting and "gg/bye/thank" at the end.

Where are you all finding these "ice mages" and whatnot? Since I started this game in 2012 ON the unofficial RP servers even, I've yet to see it. What I think you've found are trolls masquerading as RPers. There's a difference even if they might look the same.

They're.. slightly more rare than one would believe based on the stories, but they're real. Back when Sohm Al (Hard) was current my friend and i encountered one. He didn't say a thing, no emotes, nothing. He just cast ice spells the entire run. But we're getting close to duty finder tales territory, I don't mean to derail. Just wanted to answer you. To this day, that has been the only one.

They're rare, but you never forget them when you encounter them. A friend of mine was stuck with an Ice Mage in duty (only a Guildhest thankfully, but still!), and I've asked RPers to turn off their multi-line macros of special text for abilities more than a few times. One of the worst was a SCH in World of Darkness who shouted everything to the alliance, even Eye for an Eye casts. I also met a WHM who used /emote to literally fill the chat log with "flavor text" about their imagined actions for basic skills like Presence of Mind, Divine Seal (RIP), and of course Raise... not even anything funny, just "beseeches the elementals of the Twelveswood for their blessings to hasten the granting of boons to the party blah blah blah" type stuff. It's irritating to say the least. Just keep it to yourself or in an LS/FC chat if you want to be a special person with super cool and witty text to go with your spells. Or even better... USE /echo PLEASE!

I think most people rp to an extent, I mean Im a guy playing a female charcter think that would be rp in my book. So anyone who does that is rp as well, Erp on the other hand this is something Ive had zero experience with so I cant speak on that. But I rp just being a female warrior of light, I actually tried doing myself like some people do it just didnt feel right and I didnt enjoy it nearly as much.

No necessarily. Some people play yhe opposite gender because theyr identify their gender identity to be that. Some people are in transition for many several reasons other people are not soing that cuz of several reason of because they consider themselves that that gender they are playing is part of their psychological imagine of themselves so not everybody do as you do. You play a female character (cuz?) and should be tagged as rp.

Well thats pretty obvious but a ton of heterosexual males play female characters its pretty common in mmo games. So I was very aware that some may identify as that sex but the majority just play female charterers because they like to, most characters you see in the game are mostly just straight males playing female characters. When I say this Im in no way demeaning those whom play that role because thats what they identify as.

Yeah, this is what I think every time I people use those go-to "rpers are ruining it for me!" stories. Not just because I've never encountered it myself (I haven't, ever, in all my years of MMOs), but knowing roleplay communities as long as I have... I've known people who macro stuff to their spells, but that's as "invasive" as I've ever seen.

I have no problem with RPing for the most part, it can be very fun and add to the immersion of this or other games.

ERP is not my thing but I don't really care if others do it.

However there are a few things that I have personally encountered multiple times that makes me not always look favorably on portions of the RP community.

First are the people that try to force or engage others in their RP or ERP wantonly , often to the detriment of others' experience. There are the people who randomly try to elicit "sexual" interactions between their character and yours. There are the people who join groups of random other players who did not consent to RPing and then hinder those people's experience, for example I had a person in a DF dungeon once that role-played an "explorer" so they would constantly stop and slowly walk around rooms doing inspect and lookout emotes because they were "looking for hidden treasure and secret passages" even though they knew there weren't any.
These people are very rare and a small part of the RP community, but they leave quite an impact when you run into them.

Second, there is a lot of bad and incredibly unimaginative rp out there, the kind that would make a tween fan-fic live journal seem like Shakespeare. These are the rp'ers that have created backgrounds and personas for their characters that are overt rip-offs of other pop culture IP's, like various Anime, and are utterly lore breaking. These are the Naruto Targaryens, the orphaned love-child of a fox spirit and a dragon born in the form of a cat-person. Okay, I may be over exaggerating a bit, but honestly not by much.

Lastly, there are those that RP that equate playing a role as being extremely theatrical and overly dramatic in their rendition. They lack subtly and artistry to their implementation and instead strut about as if on a stage overacting even the simplest of things as if they need to make sure that everyone knows they are RPing. If you are constantly announcing yourself and your actions in overly flowery prose of questionable quality, you don't come off as an integrated and believable part of the world, you come off as a loud fool that actually is breaking the serenity and immersion of those around you.

While these critiques are undeniably harsh, we all must keep in mind that those that perpetrate such things are a very, very small part of the RP community. However they are by far the most visible and memorable members because well done RP flies under the radar, making it seem like more of the community is like this than is actually the case.

In a ways, this is very much the same as the negative outlooks on other groups within the community, such as the "hardcore" players, the "speedruners", the "casual" players, etc. People let the few bad apples determine their perception of the group as a whole and then they let this ill-conceived perception paint their interactions with anyone they determine to be of that group.

In the end I just compartmentalize the groups into RPers (the quiet majority), which I have no problem with, and bad RPers (the loud minority), which I prefer to avoid as much as possible.

As bswpayton said. There are lots of heterosexual males I know(myself included) that play a female character because it's a lot easier to make them look good(at least that's what I find). And you have more options for glamour. Some of it could possibly also stem from other games where the gender you chose determined which class you could play(Ragnarok Online with Archers being able to be Bard/Dancer depending on gender for example). Though that doesn't seem like it would ever be a concern in FF.

As for the RP/ERP discussion, ERP to me is the same as full on public sex irl. It's not something that (most) people do, as they tend to keep that type of stuff in the privacy of their own homes. I know there are people that are doing it, and as long as I don't need to see/hear it, have at it(as long as you are all consenting adults). For regular RP, I see no real harm the majority of the time as long as those that are RPing know when to stop, and when others are being serious about something.

One thing that I noticed is that guys tend to make a good looking female character while girls tend to make a good looking male character. About the RP thing. They just assumed I did RP and ERP because I was talking to a friend who was very active in the "RP community?". My friends don't RP with me even if they are RPers. They tell me their experience and what they work on, but I never participated so I would say people should invest a bit of time before just assuming (of course it is not all RPers doing that but the first impression impacts very strongly and stay with one the longest.)

Another bad experience with RPers. I queued for DF to do my dailies. They were all happy and greet so did I, but they were all friends and from the same server (which I didn't know till way later). They started to have a lot of text and emotes with every skills they did and even talked how they were feeling as we were going in. we didn't even get to the first boss and they killed us 5 times because the healer was very scared and was telling to their group to get out of the dungeon (roleplaying of course) and one of the DPS was "always ready" to go forward and be the brave one aka meaning going ahead of me - the tank- and pulling everything (this was my first time in the dungeon....) and the other DPS was "new" to this new job so he was "still learning his new skills" again RPing all this. I got super annoyed, and I am sorry to say that I got to type in caps and tell them how frustrating I was. My first experience in the dungeon was irritating thanks to their damn idea of making a party of three people and queue together. I told them that I would leave at least they stopped the roleplaying. I didn't sign for their amusement. After that they went quiet and stopped their little game and we finished the dungeon really fast.

As I said, I don't care much, but when they make the others game experience annoying is when they need to stop what they are doing and think on what they are doing wrong and avoid doing it because as much as they paid to play this game, I paid this game to enjoy it in a different aspect as they do.

I've encountered RP-ers in dungeons only once or twice; luckily for me they could spell, clearly had great imaginations, and were hilarious. I remember those few runs very fondly. They inspired the rest of us to join in, and we all had a blast, so there was no griefing about the duty taking too long. I can sympathise though if the RP element interferes with gameplay; dungeons aren't the place to take your Sylvie WHM (though that's a whole other can of worms)

RP done well is very entertaining. I don't RP myself - I don't have the self confidence - or not in FFXIV though I do play DnD in a game that's pretty RP based and it is huge fun. I'm a writer so my character does have a vast and intricate backstory that goes all the way back to pre-Calamity days but I wouldn't feel comfortable expressing any of that in an IC way. But if I encounter RP in /say and it's well done, I'll hang around to enjoy it. Bad RP I walk away, I wouldn't dream of reporting anyone for being bad at typing/writing in cliches/having a mediocre imagination
