To all the naysayers. I would like to remind you that a system is in place already that forces you to stay active or else you lose the house you invested millions of gils in. I find it to be hypocrisy to refuse such an idea when the kicking system for housing was praised when implemented.

In my opinion, I think it would be fair. You have one already with the housing so why not add one for names and further enchain the players to the game? Myeah? I think, though, that a reasonable amount of time, say a year, is beyond enough to flag you as an inactive player making a system add some random letters at the end of your name and offer you a free name change upon your return.

house plots are limited
names in a two name system are endless. The limit is the players creativity.

I don't consider it a valid argument when the subject of this discussion is about names that are recognisable and not made-up names. A minor thing, I admit without hesitation, but no different than housing in term of limitations. Let it be know also that such names are only available once in a life time and offered to those quick enough to snatch them before another, usually at launch. Not even time and efforts invested like housing.

Also, the name I currently have was the result of my inability to use a name I've been using for years in mmorpgs. A name that, although extremely obscure and unpopular, was still chosen by some lvl 23 marauder who hasn't been active in god knows how long. I don't really care anymore since I like my new name. But it is a bittersweet feeling considering the missed opportunity.

Honestly? I hate that system, because it forces me to go to my house in order for me to keep it. Personally, if they wanted to introduce a system like that, why not use a system where you just have to log in order to keep your house? The time i play is limited, so i try to get the most out of my play time as i can. This means that i'll jump online, work on the moogle quests and run my daily dungeons till it's time for me to head off to bed. Due to this, i forget to head back to my house and log off there, because i'd have to go out of my way to get to my house (just so that i can log off). The moment i'd log back into the game, i'd go back to Idylshire for my daily routine anyway.

I had my own house a while ago. But, after getting a couple of mails (saying that the house would be demolished if i wouldn't enter my house within the next couple of days) i decided that it's just not worth the hassle. Therefor, i let the timer run out, have the house get demolished and just left it with that. On top of that, i also had stuff going on in real life where i couldn't log in for a couple of weeks (PC broke down and i didn't have a replacement i could use). Because of that, i lost all of the furnishings the Housing NPC would hold on to for a limited amount of time.

The question is, why did it have to be like this? I play the game almost on a daily basis. I have plenty of things to do, like leveling and gearing jobs, getting the weekly drops from raids, capping my tomes, running content with friends, etc. So, why do people like me have to go to the house in order to keep it? The system was meant to clear out houses from people who have been inactive for an longer period of time, so that others will have the opportunity to get a house.

However, this problem was caused because there weren't a lot of plots available to begin with. This is a structural flaw within the housing system. But, the feature the OP is requesting is not a structural flaw within the system. The OP is simply annoyed of the fact that he/she cannot create a character with a certain name, because the name has already been taken by someone else. He/she requests that every inactive character below level 50 should be renamed, so that he/she can use that specific name for his/her character. To me, that's just some one being selfish and greedy (pardon my English).

If SE would even consider a feature like this, then they should not check if the character has been inactive for an extended period of time, but check if the service account has been inactive for an extended period of time. The same should've applied for the Housing system. They should've looked at the activity of the service account, not if they have entered the house within a certain amount of time.

I mean, come on... People can be a little bit more creative when coming up with a character name. There are plenty of (Fantasy) Name Generators, in case people need some inspiration when coming up with a name for their character.

I entirely agree. The housing system, at its core, is flawed and they used this flaw to enforce this obligation to log on and be active with it or else face VERY HEAVY consequences. It just so happened that the playerbase requested it first, not knowing they were giving a company the key to keep a part of its players through the obvious act of keeping one's house, investment and efforts hostage under the pretense of fairness. A friend has invested 200 million in his house and is now forced to stay subscribed, not wanting to lose the amount which is ridiculous since she is currently taking a break, thus making her spend money for almost nothing. Same happened to me. I took a break for 2-3 months last year because life prevented me from giving the game much attention. I still play today but with 15mil less in my pockets since my house and all its furniture was destroyed and deleted as punishment for not playing the game. Because, let's face it, that's what it is and not a golden opportunity for some random player to take my house and going inactive shortly after, thus losing it in turn. I am not making this up.

All in all, the kicking system is idiotic and unfair, especially since the option to ''recover'' your stuff is hindered by time(another enforcing tool to stay subscribed) AND inventory space.

But let us stay on subject since this discussion is about names and not housing. I defend OP's idea since the housing system is far worst than a naming system and I think my contributing suggestion to make the inactivity flag appear after a year is very reasonable considering the facts. I'm not saying they should make it a thing, i'm in fact against all kinds of punishment systems but if housing was made, there is no reason to refuse its theoretical implementation. Alongside this, just like housing, names can have a sentimental value and it's not because someone can't relate to a particular name that they should disrespect the wish for someone to acquire said sentimental value for themselves from someone who no longer plays the game.

it would be unfair for people who paid for the game and/or subscription at one point in time (and the potential future re-subscription). some people who are also currently playing and subscribed have few-many level 1-49 (or higher) characters just because they want to - it's unfair for them also because they pay the monthly fee like everyone else.

if this was a free to play game, it'd be fine i guess to have a system that deletes obviously abandoned characters because it's just taking up server space/resources

A few years ago TERA decided to do a name wipe of everyone who had not logged in for 2 years. Popular names were freed…and then instantly scooped up by new name hoarders.

No worries. I was merely pointing out the differences between the auto-demolition feature from the housing system compared to the request from the OP when it comes to renaming and claiming character names.

Someone who's currently playing the game, should not have one of their characters flagged as "inactive" if the character belongs to a service account the player is still using. He/she could be leveling different characters. If the player hasn't paid his/her subscription for an extended period of time (like a year or 2) and the service account hasn't been reactivated since then, you can safely say that the player stopped playing the game. For example, since FFXIV went into Alpha in 2010, i stopped playing FFXI and i haven't touched it since. So, after almost 7 years, i wouldn't mind if SE has deleted my character entirely (since i won't be playing the game anymore). Even if i did decide to pick up the game again, i'd probably want to start over anyway.

The main issue with a feature like this is: Who are we to say that the name has less sentimental value to the player who had chosen this name for his/her character? Is the person behind the character taking a break, or did he/she stop playing the game in general?

Like you said in your post, a system like the one the OP mentioned should not be a thing in any game. But, if it's obvious that the player doesn't play the game anymore, then they won't be needing the name anymore. It's just hard to determine if the player did stop playing the game, or if they are taking a break.

I'm originally from City of Heroes, where if you were a Cloud, Goku, or Stark, you'd wake up to your new name Generic Hero 006313796. You could look like Wolverine all you wanted as long as your name was The Claw Guy. If anything, famous names outside of FF (since Highwind and Strife are in the name generator) should be locked down.

I have to wonder whay you would want a "popular name". How about being original? Why get confused with all those other players whose names are almost identical?

I'm in the "Nay" group. I see enough wannabe anime/manga/game characters. #UseYourBrain #BeCreative.

It's funny this thread was created..last night someone was telling me how in WoW they purposely took someones name and how you could do that fairly easily in WoW. T.T

I don't think that is a good idea....in a game like this where you can have a last name, just be a bit more creative ^^ Make your character original!

A year of inactivity on a level 1 character does not qualify as a "break", extended or otherwise. That's starting up the game for the first time during a free trial and literally being so uninterested that they couldn't be bothered to complete the first few quests. They aren't coming back, and even if by some miracle they do, they probably wouldn't even remember what their character name was in which case changing it doesn't hurt a thing.

It probably doesn’t for a level 1 but if the criteria is simply 12 months inactivity, then much like the system for housing demolition, it could affect more people than just those inactive level 1 accounts.

I am well aware that this is not FFXI, but when I played that if you went inactive after three months, your character was moved to some sort of limbo area and it would become completely irretrievable after exactly one year of inactivity regardless of level and this was an MMORPG that encouraged you at the log in screen to have a life outside of the game.

Quite frankly I'm happy with no such system being in place. The inactive characters are not hurting anyone and I'm sure most people can survive not being "InsertpopularFFcanonnamehere" with out being too wounded.

Just because people think they 'might' do it based solely on inactivity does not mean that's how it would happen. That's why I (and others) have suggested that both Level AND inactivity be the qualifying factors.

Yes, but it doesn't mean that they will do it by both either. Like I said, at the end of the day those level 1 inactive accounts aren't hurting anyone. They don't prevent you from playing the game at all in any way. If the name someone wants is taken they just simply pick a new one, its not the end of the world.

I also don't think a system like this should be implemented just because someone is miffed that a popular character name is taken. If it benefitted the actual game and community as a whole in some way, then I'm all for it but not because a few people want to be named the same thing as a character from their favourite TV show or game.

Not to mention that simply deleting level 1 accounts that are inactive might not necessarily free up a name. I have an alt on another server that I made to play with a friend, said friend never joined the game so that character is level 1. My FC mate also has an alt with the same name as his main on another sever and, you guessed it, its level 1. Just because a character is level 1 doesn't mean its on an inactive account.

There's no reason to define popular names...Just have a system where characters who haven't logged in in two years release the name, and if the person logs in again they have to choose a new one if someone else took their name.

The loss of characters after one year was somewhat a scare tactic. I quit in 06 and came back to 11 in 2011 all mine were fine. Friend left after the great R0 debacle and he just couldn't get back on so around 06 as well. He came back in 2012. He had the garden mule system. He got back any character that was past level 10 but all below 10 they were unable to restore. So they were saving data in some form for at least six years. That also included at least one merge since my name was gone when I came back.

Also I think I have played with every Game of Thrones character at least once. Also probably 3/4s of their cousins. 11 was bad for Inuyashu names at the time of launch so many Sesshōmaru versions.

No one is talking about deleting accounts...just changing the name due to excessive inactivity. And the inactivity can be on the service account itself rather than the character. Honestly all I'm seeing is "We're scared SE might not do it in a way we like and we enjoy holding certain names hostage on characters we never play anyway so we are against this." IMHO, even if said level 1 character is in an active service account, if it hasn't been played in a year+ it deserves to have the name forcibly changed to accommodate others who will use the name and actually play.

So, if I level up my inactive characters to level 2, I can keep all their names?

Except it would cost money to develop this (and pay the support staff to deal with the complaints and inevitable cases of impersonation/theft) yet nobody has presented examples of why it is necessary other than wanting to play as Arya Stark, explicitly violating the published naming rules. Why would S-E spend time and money developing something solely for the benefit of people flouting the rules they made?

The ideas to change names by one letter after x years are even weirder. So people with original names already that nobody wants should have them changed to different original names for no reason?

By definition, that would no longer be an inactive character yes. If you enter your house and log out again, the housing demolition timer resets. However, that would be you making a concious effort to keep your character name, OP is talking about people who have literally abandoned their characters.

All I'm seeing is "but I want "Special Snowflake" as my character name and I’m annoyed because someone got there first". If SE wanted this feature to be in the game then sadly it most likely already would be. FFXI had a system that deleted in active characters, if SE wanted to implement that then I imagine they could. This topic has been heavily discussed several times on this forum and vast majority of players were heavily against it.

As I said, not being able to be “Cloud Strife” because a level 1 who seems inactive has the name does not prevent any from playing and enjoying FFXIV. The game actually has more important issues SE should be focusing on than some possibly inactive people who were tempted by free trial and didn’t realise there is a monthly sub.

At the end of the day I pay for my account when it’s active, I don’t want to return and be forced to either remake my character and start again or have to think up a new name because I’ve had to take a break due to real life issues. This game was advertised as being friendly to people who also play casually, forcing this on them would kind of go in the opposite direction much like the grind fest that was FFXI.

It doesn't change the fact that there are a lot of casual players on this game and IMHO this could actually deter people from playing. A friend of mine on Phoenix plays very sporadically, he played at launch for 6 months, then quit and returned a month before Heavenward. I doubt he would have come back at all had his name or character been forcibly taken from him.

It also doesn’t change the fact that a system that requests you to name change would still not free up as many names as you think. If a level 1 is inactive but on an active account, nothing is stopping the account owner from logging in on that character and still prevent the name from being repurposed if they are so inclined.

The character I made a launch of FFXI legit got deleted after 12 months inactivity, to start again I had to purchase a new copy of the game to get an account. Starting over on that game from scratch was not easy, I didn’t stick with it long term after that which is partly why I don't think a system like that is a great thing.

It was bad for such names and while FFXIV has gone down the same path with names, there are times when I have played with people who were all named something more original.

Ugh, RO haven’t thought about that game in a while.….I was heavily in to that MMO but I was on Sakray and the constant rollback sucked lol.

This exactly. People don’t think of the wider repercussions having this sort of system in would bring. It would also be somewhat unfair for SE to implement a system, that for the most part, would really only benefit a minority of players who are unsatisfied that a popular name such as Arya Stark or Cloud Strife is already being used.

I believe the point there was to level the inactive character to level 2, then leave it inactive again since OP specified inactive level 1 characters.

It's starting to get annoying - people that can't be original with their character, can't deal with popular names being taken. Just rename your character, use a different spelling or something, and be done with it (I am pretty sure that this should be the case for all levels). it gets annoying when people can't deal with 1st come 1st served for names come to the forums and whine, and demand that Yoshi-P fix it for them, without consideration that it breaks other player's characters.
