Are the apartments as big as the FC little rooms, or are they at least bigger? I already have my own room due to the FC house, dunno if there's any point packing up my stuff to try get an apartment if it's still a useless, tiny space.

They are the same size as an FC room.
They are there to stay though, while an FC room can be lost for any number of reasons (you wanting to leave the FC, having a fight, the leader suddenly going crazy and disbanding the FC, etc...)
So I'd say what this room gives you is additional safety, especially if you have destroyed-on-removal furniture.
Or just a different area to live in.
Even if they dropped PS3 support in 4.x the Ishgard housing areas would be supported for the PS3. As long as free companies can buy houses they will always need to support that area for the PS3 even if the latest expansion hasn't came out for the console as those PS3 users would be able to teleport there. If they disabled teleporting there then they just limited the amount of FCs those users can join.
Well there is always another option which I think could keep some players happy but I don't know if it would work with the game as a whole. The implementation of a rental system, eg: Person A (who wants gil and not housing etc) buys an apartment, decorates it and rents it out to Person B who wants space and is willing to pay so much gil per month/week . Just like renting a property/apartment occurs in real life. So you could in essence like share it, to allow for an unfurnished apartment to be furnished by the buyee and in that case sharing could be the rental agreement...
But I know even that if there is some way of doing this, the housing mafia types would just be a pain for all of those wanting to have their own space etc.
I wonder if apartments have a place for the mini-aetherite that grants you a cheap port to your home. If so, that could be a reason for even someone who has a house wanting another. FC house in one region, personal house in another, apartment in a third could equal three cheap teleport locations.
Those are outdoor only furniture and apartments have no outdoor space. Looking at the preview from the liveletter (here at about the 2 minute mark), there's a crystal on the opposite side of the chocobo stables that you'll probably be attuned to when you purchase an apartment. Judging from the video (and that the whole system seems to be a tweaked FC house) you'll likely teleport to the front of the building, have to then enter the building to proceed to the apartment access door and then select to go to your apartment or an open apartment from a list of all apartments in the building.
I own 3 houses and still plan on getting an apartment. Come at me.
Translation of the apartment part of the latest 4Gamer/Dengeki interview: "90 people can live in an aparment per ward. They can actually have 500 people live in one apartment, but in that case there will be wards with nobody living in them, so they started with 90 so people spread out among all the wards. If that's not enough, they'll add rooms instantly."
If that is true, people are freaking out for nothing; we're looking at potentially 36k apartments per server, which will be more than enough even for Balmung and Gilgamesh. And even if it isn't, new apartments will be considerably easier to add than new housing plots anyway.
The thing is there is more apartments then maybe we will need. I you check out this they say there is a lot more housing then we though there was going to be.

I still would suggest logging on as soon as you can and grabbing one though, I know where I am parking my character before the patch.
Yea after the first 90 rooms are taken they will open other rooms in the apartment( max for one building is 500), so theres a max of 30000 rooms available per world.
Hopefully with the 24hr maint they do add a feature that automatically adds in more wards as needed and isn't something that requires downtime to execute. I could see them adding more wards when the capacity hits 95% or even 90%, a point where you always have empty rooms available regardless of whether or not they are needed. it would be a lot better than having a single room empty and needing to fill it up before adding more apartments.
