Tank Design Contest Semi-Finalists

Wow, I'm surprised that no one designed an armor that looked like Godbert Manderville made with gold, pearls, and diamonds, and had the visor command make the mask smile.

Thanks! That's for the best. I felt terrible for the finalists during the hairstyle comp tbh.

A set of rules would have been nice as to how the design has to look because half of these aren't really tanky should be something everyone can wear.

I like the Allagan coat a lot, but really hope it doesn't win. Rather, I'd prefer they hold off on that particular design and release it as a full tier set for some form of content. It'd feel sort of weird for just the tanks to get a new Allagan set, you know? Maybe they could even stuff it into second coil savage as a set of rewards!

My overall favorite is the Nominal set. Enough plate to be sturdy but not overly bulky, a really unique silhouette, and (most importantly to me) it seems like it would look appropriate on any of the three tanks. Most shared gear sets feel like they favor one of the three so getting a good all-around set visually would be great.

I disagree. Remember, we are neither seeing all the entries nor voting on the designs. These are the top armors S.E. liked the most. They liked the non-traditional designs.

The contest's rules gave a lot of leeway which allowed the participant's imagination to come up with all sorts of interesting designs. The developers shared the top picks so we can admire the entries and have fun discussing them.

Taken directly from the contest rules. S.E. can choose their favorite tank design and have other designs to possibly adapt to the game for other roles or classes. It's a win all around for the participants and the game.

On that note, though, I'd be pretty disappointed if I designed a set for the tank contest only for SE to implement the outfit as, say, healer gear instead. Either they have to implement the chosen gear as tank gear only, or they have to make it available for all classes to be fair to the participants who clearly intended for their designs to be worn on tank classes.

If we had to get more themed tome gear id love a hraesvelgr/nidhogg/tiamat/midgardsormr themed tome set for all the jobs(roles I mean not job specific) using this as an idea/template. More interesting than primals imo

Since we don't have Ramuh or Titan themed Sets yet, yes :P

Oh wait, Job-specific. I'd say not all of them should be taken from the contest. They still have to resemble the "iconic" look for the Job and so far none of these sets resemble that for AST, BLM, SMN, DRG, etc. They were designed primarily for Tanks and even when they didn't adhere to the mold for that they are still off the mark regarding matching the "iconic" image of the respective Job.

As for winners I hope the Horizon or Luminous Allagan sets make it into the game

Wasn't this a contest for a Tank set? Quite a few of them don't even fit a Tank but every role in general... Feels like people mixed the words glamour and tank during this contest.

I'm not a big fan of it tbh. I'm sick of capes and I don't really like the fur, or the weird shoulder pads. also, incoming "its sexist because females have cleavage window" or some BS that people like to whine about on the forums.

The cape is one thing I was doubtful of being implemented due to clipping. The thing Ilike about it is the simple fact that the female armor is feminine and male is masculine. Ido haveto ask how you can be sick of capes though,there are how many(few) in this game?

See I like that one too. As for the capes, I mean butt capes, cloaks, trench coats. Pretty much all the tank gear in the last several years has had a cape in some form. And i really just dont like capes :P Always had mine turned off in guild wars.

The game I played before this haD capes as seperate items, and they came in a good variety, and since they carried no stats they were pretty well optional.

so im not gonna lie SE take notes cas the fans are putting your armor designs to shame

Honestly I'm not a fan of plate mail (I know unpopular opinion esp for a TANK. sue me)

I like a few others too. The one with the fur/brestplate has too much female/male differentiation for me to like it. Like, if guys also got the skirt or girls also got pants then fine... but it's too different
(I say that but there was another with pants/skirt option that I do like in the semi-finalists...though I think it wasn't as drastic of a difference so I could live with it.)

Don't like the other choices too much though. Most don't feel like a tank or are too much "anime". That Allagan coat is nice too, but i feel it's something we already have somehow in the game. Doesn't feel new.

Personally, I find all of them pretty bad a tank gear. I like some of them but they do not look like tank gear.

As for the ones trying to be tank gear...I wonder what circus the inspiration comes from? Yet another set of armor to glamour over/not to use :(

I like this armor. It's really pretty. But that's what makes it not really tank gear in my opinion.. You're like. asking for your arm to get chopped off or get stabbed xD. I like light armors for tank. But that's TOO light. And it looks like straight up caster gear.

It just doesn't click with me that a tank would wear that to a fight O.o. it's a bit too pretty. And the small Au Ra girl doesn't make it any more threatening lolol

This is by far the best one out of them all, I so hope it wins

I liked many of them. I will be sad and create a disappointing thread to whine that they implemented only one. I really liked many of them. The "allagan" one is so fantastic and blends really well in game. Looks like a proper FF design. The "tribal" one is also cool. There is one you like a Power Ranger mech too. Very nice designs there. SE please do this more often. There are people here with great ideas and creativity.

There are some really amazing designs here. I hope the designers of everything re-posted in this thread get jobs as game artists if they don't already have them.
