Stop being so hostile in the game

Being French i can translate if any use.

"Putain comment il est naze": "damn, he sucks hard".

"Il active aucune défense" (they wrote "defance", their spelling sucks btw): "he doesnt use any defensive CD".

"Cest ma faute": "its my bad" (healer).

"Je sais pas jai jamais fait tank": "i dont know, i never tried tanking myself".

"Mais non etc...": "its not your fault. He has to activate his defensive CDs to help you healing him. It is what tanks are designed for".

The rest = "it doesnt matter etc".

They are not that rude. Here you basically have 3 players complaining about a lack of CDs and a healer apologizing.

I do remember your posts on the tank thread and if i remember well you are pretty new to tanking.
No offense of course. But we lack the story from your side.

Perhaps these guys should get some credit here.

Also given their horrible typos ("sais" for "cest" = "know" for "be" only because the two verbs sound the same :) ) they are probably young

Just throwing this out there in defense of all those "rude French players" - keep in mind that if someone's first language is not English, they will most likely structure their sentences in a different way than you. My FC has quite a few French-speaking players, and there have been several times where a comment will sound overly-harsh or serious to my English-only ears, but they mean absolutely nothing bad it. It's just how it comes across when they are translating their comments into English.


This does not excuse the true prats in game. They will continue to exist no matter the language they speak.

In all fairness Skivvy, this happens with English speaking people as well. Often, especially through text, full meaning, intent and tone are not conveyed.

Oh yeah, most definitely :) Text in general can be quite easy to take wrong - I've just noticed it a bit more with our French FC members.

You don't need to be completely fluent, but people will expect to be able to communicate with you, so you should have at least some basic understanding of the language.

Auto-translate includes things like "I can understand a little" and "Please use simple words" and I'd regard those as reasonable for a language you selected. Your teammates should be willing to make enough effort to speak simply when someone in the group needs that (at least once they're informed that someone needs it). It's when people check languages that they don't understand at all (or little enough that they're unwilling to make an attempt at it) and then expect the rest of the group to use (or understand) a different language, whichever one they themselves speak natively, that's where it gets rude. It's rude whether it's an English speaker refusing to communicate in French after selecting both, a French speaker refusing to communicate in English after selecting both, or any other combination with German or Japanese into the mix.

Now, I have a decided advantage in that my native language, English, is the most widespread language on my server and data center. So I can get away with only selecting that language alone and not have it impact my queue times much. I could also select German and perhaps Japanese, because I can understand them to some extent. Though it was a long time ago that I studied it, I think I still remember enough German to write in it well enough to make myself understood. For Japanese, I'd also have to figure out how to switch the PS4's keyboard to JP mode, and still wouldn't be able to say very much, but if I took the time to familiarize myself with it first auto-translate could probably cover my lack of skill there. I would never queue for a run with French selected, though, because I don't speak that language at all. It's probably the second most widespread language on the data center, but if I were with a group of French speakers I'd have no clue as to what was going on in party chat, and that wouldn't be fair to the rest of the team.

Aion has the worst community for an MMO that I have personally encountered. I've even had their forum moderators tell me to go kill myself because I suggested improvements to the game's downloader. And this was in the first three months of launch. Trust me, 14's community is far tamer in comparison. Could still use some improvement, though.

...TWO? You'd only wish. I think there's actually THREE:

1- Your info in your search profile, which shows up in the party member list as well.
2- What you tick in the Duty Finder.
3- What you tick in the PARTY Finder.

And my comprehension of the three are as follow:
Search profile: Shows languages you understand if ticked. Shows current client language if undersigned.
Duty Finder: People who you'd agree to be matched with.
Party Finder: People you accept in your party that you are recruiting members for.

Hence the confusion, I'd say. People can and will continue to select most language to speed up queue times... and in all fairness, who would blame them?

I would say that the OP escalated the situation unnecessarily. A healer dancing instead of healing is frustrating, but it's not really the same as singling out someone and attacking their skill level. That said, I think we are lacking too much information to gauge the situation.

That seems to be a common theme in this game though.

It's really sad to see how rude some of you really are against us, French players...

I never, NEVER played with any EN/US player who tried to speak french in dungeons...

The thing is, when you play with 3 Spanish players, 3 German players or whaterver, most of the time, they speak their language even if you don't understand it.
As many said, Some French players are jerks but that's the case of many players of many countries.
For those who think our English is bad, we live in EU so we don't have to learn english at school. We can learn to speak German, Spanish, etc. That's why many of us choose the language of their family origins (way much easier...).

Anyway I'm not here to do some mea culpa instead of those guys you were playing with.

Well, I hope you will all understand what I wrote (using Google trad is not my cup of tea). If not, forgive the poor French player who try to speak english that I am... :p

My raid group has had quite a few bad experiences with french players in sephiroth. The biggest problem is their inability to communicate.

My biggest problem with the french people are their insistence on qeueing "wrong". I only have english language selected and yet earlier today i god paired up with 3 frenchies. And god they where bad, stuf was dieing slowly and when one of them DC's it took almost 10 minutes for him to come back. Tried to vote kick the offline player because i didnt think he was coming back and only after it failed did i notice they must have been a premade 3 man french team. Didnt want to leave because I had a raid scheduled soon and didnt want the lockout. After he finally came back i got a vote dismis myself.
The whole time not a word was said by them. Thats the french in general for you.

Lucky not all of them are like that, there is a french player in my fc and he is actually quite good/friendly.

Namida-Hikari, Ultear_Milkovich is French. They're just explaining the communication problems for those who aren't Francophones in the thread, not saying that French people are bad at English.

Seriously, English-speakers behave exactly the same on servers where they aren't the majority language. The irony in some of these posts from the perspective of someone on a non-NA world is incredible; if you changed 'French' to 'American' throughout your post it would perfectly match some of my worst parties on a Japanese data centre. But there's no point in grouping all American (or French) players together like that because every culture has its share of bad, uncommunicative players; if the people in question were doing well you probably wouldn't even realise they weren't native speakers in the first place, so poor behaviour stands out.

I'd just like to add here that I've met some really nice French players and the stereotype is pretty silly. I once entered a duty in progress with three other French players. I had French ticked (my own fault, I know). They asked me something in French and I told them I couldn't speak fluent French. They then started speaking what English they could and told me it was no problem and thanked me for helping them finish the duty because they would have had to abandon otherwise. They were also good players as well as good people.

Edit: this is me merely sharing my experience with language barriers, and showing that it's possible to have a good experience in duty finder regardless.

People were bashing the French the moment this thread was posted, and the thread was cleaned up. My post personally was just my experience with language barriers, which isn't derailing from the OP in any way. Also others posts are in relation to having certain languages ticked but not being able to speak that language.

If the French speakers who've responded to this thread with translations are right, those players were no more rude than they're expected to be, given the situation. We don't know the full story, but the OP seems to have overreacted and placed that bias on them whether intentionally or not.

Three French people, same server, they were together on their first class, all of them were lv21-23.

Tank would never use Flash, or their enmity combo for that matter, basically spamming Riot Blade. I started picking up hate, regularly, so I shrugged it off and I didn't even bother explaining anything to them, they clearly didn't care assuming how they were playing and the fact that they were French just by looking at the character list.

Out of the blue, as you can see because I made sure I caught the server message so you can clearly notice how I didn't make things up, the tank started insulting me just like that. Nobody died, I was just the person tanking and he got mad. The picture says it all, nothing else was said after that as I was kicked (thankfully) right after I sent my report in.

Some people may think others got something against the French community, but the truth is, the French themselves are their own enemies, since they're building their own bad reputation.

I'm glad I got a nice Aurum Vale party after this and went by quick.

Oh com'on I encountered rude people of every type - be it E, F or D - here is not the point of being from that ethnicity! The point is there is plenty rude people in this game, but at the same time there is a lot of nice ones... I encountered the nicest E,F and D people. The point is that F and D get noticed the most because they have different letter.

OP was unlucky and fell into a group of rude people and also with a language barrier...

Enough with the excuses, it's no coincidence that the HUGE majority of bad/rude players are French. I got nothing against the French, and no one's talking about their ethnicity (you know, I'm caucasian as well), but their culture. They're prone to do those things and be like that online, end of the story. Either they start by cleaning their own mess or more people will isolate them because of themselves. Of course, I've met some great French players myself, but, you know, I tend to avoid them for a reason.

I didn't try to fuel anything; that screenshot shows just one of the many times that has happened, and the common factor is that usually they're French. You guys shouldn't fight us, but those French players who are giving you a bad name. I'm not doubting any individuals; as I've said, I know plenty of great French players, but they're the minority, and when it comes to being rude, they take the cake by a long shot.

Keep telling me (us) to grow up, and keep proving my (our) point. I don't really care much, but you're against a wave of people here.

Ive been playing on an american server from sept. 13 to nov 14, with my "F" checked and underlined, and never met any bad behaviour or hostile attitude towards me. I would say that most players were friendly. I had to leave, because raiding at PST times was not possible anymore.

Now im on an EU server with a majority of French players. Funny thing is that i now have my client in English, as i decided to main DRK with HW and the French translation of the DRK skills sounds horrible to me (tranchage découpage xd).

I have no issue with E/F/D players or whoever.

But I still tend to avoid the FR community of my server because i know something that you non-French are not aware of: a lot of them chose Moogle because it is the preferred server on the "jeuxvideo.com" forums which are the French "4chan" (but even worse), draining a lot of immature , and agressive people to our place.

Otherwise I think that our community is not that bad.

I’m sorry, but you can’t deduct someone's nationality based on their character names. That’s just silly. I have characters with Japanese, French and German names, but that doesn’t make me any more Japanese, French or German then the next player. And if it appears that they aren’t that fluent in English, does that automatically make them a “foreigner”?

I’ve read conversations from my fellow countrymen that made me feel ashamed to share the same nationality, because of their poor writing skills or lack of interesting in proper spelling or grammar (and i’m far from perfect myself).

People tend to “Pigeonhole” other players based on them being elite, casual, French, Japanese, male or female. I just want to ask: “Why?” Does it really matter where they are from, what their gender is or what playstyle they use? We’re all simple “people playing the same game”.

The issue is not their nationality, it’s their attitude. I’ve had my share my bad apples in games and the majority of them were not French. I can tell you that.

And i’d like to repeat that this is not something that only the French people are known for. It’s people in general who have a lack of common decency and simply a bad attitude who cause problems like this. It’s just that the French stick out like a sore thumb because of the language barrier. If they were using fluent english, then the thought wouldn’t have even crossed your mind that they could be French.

You would’ve just said “That guy’s an asshole!”.

Like the day before yesterday, i was in a Neverreap with a Paladin tank who was having trouble maintaining hate since he wasn’t using his skills right. Like you we shrugged and continued, but when one of our DPS used the LB when the boss had 4% HP left he replied with “wtf why did you use lb when the boss was almost dead. youre not the sharpest tool in the drawer are you?” “explain to me why you felt that you had to use the lb”

As a healer i couldn’t care less when people use the LB, as long as we make it through the duty smoothly. So, i told the Paladin “It doesn’t really matter. It’s only the first boss, so we have plenty of time to gain more.”

After a “meh”, he continued. But, during the 2nd boss, we had too many totems stacked to close to each other, so we ended up not being able to move all of them out of the ring in time and 2 of them “popped”. The tank didn’t get the adds of me, because the boss only had 3% HP left and i died just as the last Totem died. So, when the boss was killed, i returned.

The Paladin didn’t agree with me and said: “wtf healer! Why did you do that? I couldve raised you”. So, i replied: “Well, you can’t raise me in battle and returning will also remove the weakness debuff.”

“oh… I’m still new to mmos, so i guess i learned something new. meh.”

Long story short, this guy was apparently new, but he was already showing some attitude issues which will be a problem later on.

Every nation has people in it with major attitude issues and you can’t fix the attitude of someone else, like Sayafrost mentioned here:

Don’t be so quick to judge them as being from a specific nationality, race, gender, etc. They were just being jerks about it. And on that note, i do think that you could’ve handled the situation better yourself.

Well most of all of what you said was the entire point of the thread. The OP was merely venting about some bad experiences he had. It just quickly got derailed by a few overly sensitive posters who managed to misconstrue why the OP mentioned the rude players being French and some other posters keep right on jerking the wheel instead of letting us get back on track.

I'm not defending Tanathya's attitude, but I don't think they meant they could tell that the players were French just by their names. The party member list shows you what languages your party members have ticked for Duty Finder matchmaking and it's likely they all only had F checked to indicate French. That's not definitive proof of someone's nationality of course, but it's unlikely that someone who wasn't French or didn't even speak it would only check the F and leave everything else blank.

One thing I personally notice in almost all of these threads is that the conversations always go downhill really quickly - which naturally leads to reports, kicks and general bad feelings all around. Perhaps I'm just old fashioned, but when the very first comments have 'lol' (or 'meh' in that other example) appended or have someone start a conversation with a passive aggressive comment, of course people are going to escalate the discussion and turn it into a fight eventually. This is amplified a thousandfold when people are using a second language. The people who aren't native English speakers might sound harsher than intended, or they might mistake a joke for sarcasm (this goes both ways).

Part of this is simply cross-cultural differences - what sounds fine to a US player can sound insanely rude to a British player, and vice versa, even though both of them are fluent in English. I can definitely attest to this. Part is a potential age difference; teens who have been playing competitive games like LOL for years might have thicker skins than older FF devotees simply wanting to play a friendly MMO while the kids are asleep.

I basically disagree with everything else Tanathya said in this thread but in the example of her screenshot, the problem wasn't the tanking or the healing at all, it was the fact that the tank was verbally abusive right from the beginning. She then responded sarcastically as anyone would be tempted to, and this escalated things because the jerkish tank took it as an invitation to keep up the rudeness. The original poster's first complaint about their healer was sarcastic and confrontational - understandable under the circumstances, but unlikely to ever lead to an amicable resolution. When the healer took responsibility that should have been the end of it (it was admittedly made more complicated in that particular case by them apologising in French instead of using auto-translate). When you don't know the limitations of the communication skills of the other group members I think it's better to try a measured approach to begin with even if it's hard to have to be the adult.

In Japanese groups, when a non-Japanese-speaker is being an idiot the first attempt to reach out to them is always an overtly non-sarcastic helpful message, like "WHM, did you know that if you use Regen after the pull it will make things smoother? I'll use my cooldowns so don't worry too much about me at the start. Let's do our best!" and then if the target continues being stupid it will gradually escalate after giving them a few chances to screw up and learn from it. Of course kicks can still happen, and I'm sure plenty of Japanese players have been banging their heads against their desk in frustration while typing out their calm-sounding conversations using Google translate and scraps of half-remembered English. But I'm used to the more gentle approach and have never seen a party collapse into the furious name-slinging and personal insults I see every day on these forums. It's... nice.

You are right. I was under the assumption that Tanathya was referring to the names within the character list, rather than their preferred language setting.

That doesn't make sense. You know, keep taking offense, not what I wanted, but I give up. Just ignore me and keep aiming your frustration towards us, I don't care. I know I don't like one bit the community I'm supposed to belong to, and I don't take it out on those who do have something against it because I'm of the same opinion. Like I said, I know tons of French people who are really nice, and I'll keep enjoying their company.

I am not narrow minded at all. Really, have you not read the rest of the thread to notice that this isn't just me, and that what I'm actually saying (and wording) is not what you guys are talking about? I do believe you're the narrow minded here, if anything.

Few here are saying french are the worst. But in raid, I can say there are jerk as much with D or E as main language, as when they start to tell bad jokes against french or theses "D" players who start to insult french player, in german, imagining nobody understand. Not big insult but some sarcasm.

Or these ones who do bad joke against F announcement for FC but say nothing when a german player does EXACLTY the same.

Or in roulette, three players who are doing bad things to you (as refusing healing) just with the aim to kick you, even when you play properly. And when the dungeon ends, finally you get honors because they were expecting a jerk while they were acting as jerk. But I said nothing, keeping going on, making them obliged to heal if they wanted to end the dungeon, seeing they would be unable to kick me without appearing as THE jerks.

A F player can be rude, so what? E and G can be as well. That's not the F, that's internet and being anonymous.
