and I'm not understanding what's so hard about finding a wootz set and glamouring it. Whiners gonna whine.

This is a confusing topic.
It's simply impossible for Square-Enix to make every set of gear appeal to every player. Even if they have different versions for different genders, some people think bare-chested armour is feminine, other think it's the height of masculinity, and still others don't care either way but like/dislike the look based on their own personal aesthetic reasons (I expect most people are in the latter category, actually). You want 'beefcake' tank armour, fine, but my wife only likes 'sexy' tank armour and one of you is going to have to glamour each new piece of gear no matter how they design it. People have explained that there were tons of 'proper' armour options from 1-50 and it's only since then that the ostentatious skirts and straps have been incorporated into the majority of designs, so isn't that the ideal situation? It means there are lots of options with both aesthetics to choose from.
Add the fact that everyone has a completely different idea of what the word 'masculine' even means, and you have a situation with no possible resolution. There's no precedent for 'flamboyance' to be a fixed gendered concept in humans. In the animal world, many species have the males looking flamboyant while the females look plain. In the European history which provides much of the inspiration for the fantasy setting, especially in Ishgard, many cultures used to have the males dressing glamorously. In modern times, there are many countries which celebrate men dressing flamboyantly. Just because it's 2016 and the current trend in your country is for girls to wear attractive clothes while boys dress in plainer attire means nothing to the global audience of the games with tastes which cover the entire spectrum of fashion.
I completely understand the frustration of buying gear you think is ugly as it's less rewarding than the dual benefit of increasing your stats and your stylishness at the same time, but everyone has different taste. I don't like that all of my jobs have the same model for their lore gear either, especially when it's yet another white dress for three of them - but I do like the Company Tabard and the High Allagan Coat of Casting, so I'm going to change my look with this gear cycle.
Glamour prisms exist to solve this exact problem in a painless and reversible way, which is why everyone keeps suggesting it. When we currently have situations like five entire jobs sharing the exact same lore gear model and even gender-locked novelty hats to save the designers (what must be) minimal time and effort, I'd rather they didn't spend their precious resources on designing multiple different tank lore options. It will lead to even more re-use of gear models across different sets in future when they try to recoup the costs, and it's unnecessary when glamour prisms were implemented to give the players control. I'm flabbergasted to hear they're selling for 50k each on your server and can only assume your economy there has substantial inflation which makes them more affordable there; on mine they're usually under 2k and I can make any of them myself for a pittance if I don't like the price.
There's a separate problem here too which is 'there are no gear sets in the game at all that I like', and if that's the case then I think it's a good idea to suggest ideas in a way which doesn't close off options for others when there's a gap. Personally, I have nothing against robes, but I'd like to see more robes or coats cut in a way which don't clip through my feet when I run and my mount when I ride; thank goodness for tabards and tunics. Glamour is mandatory for me anyway as all of the recent WHM gear (even the PVP gear...) comes with full-length gloves which interact strangely with robes from other armour sets, so unless I buy all of my lore set in one go it's going to look unsightly without glamour.
(Separately, I completely agree that more gear inspired by FFXI and FFT designs would be great. A few intricate FFXI-style tunics would help avoid my chocobo robe-clipping nightmares.)
If the situation was reversed and everything new from now on will all be tin cans, there will be a new thread here with more flamboyant gear requests. Will you reply the same like this?
Is it so wrong to ask for more diversity in future gear design?
Or are the rest of the people who don't share your fashion chance doomed to always wear the same old glamour?
We want new tin cans too you know :p
I quite liked the bare chest on the ifrit piece.. gave it some flare! I'll trade you drg set for tank set..
I'm honestly suggesting that they think about hiring a real production artist team that can produce some options. Without getting deep into comparison, games like WoW had multitudes of classes and races with both male and female options that were always great. They also had option to transmogify (glamour) which provided even greater multitudes of options. While you weren't able to change colorsets, it did breathe life into options.
The major difference is the gearchange was not controlled by player market, and it was NPC controlled. Cost was always the same. There could be days / weeks where some prisms cost astronomical amounts and not sold in singles (at 50k+ gil per level/rank for only 2-5) which to me is excessive.
I love my Wootz armour (great Paladin look, originally full penta melded). Too bad that that SE can't design something else half decent that looks like it was designed to do the job of the one wearing it.
Gotta have a reason for all the annoying glamour prisms that drop in dungeons instead of real loot these days.
Yeah, I agree, the armor sets look very weird for males. The open chest just does not make much sense to me; from a battle stance, or from a thematic standpoint. As a warrior, I feel like the base set should look strong, intimidating, fitting for a war-ready fighter....but the chest is open and exposed, as if asking for an arrow to the heart. The arguments for "differing opinions" and "fantasy game" are fine and all, but from an immersive standpoint it would not make much sense to fight in the gear's design, and I feel like if people want to wear armor that does not make sense in battle and look more flamboyant, that should be a secondary choice to the game's actual environment.
In their defense, there is nothing more terrifying than a Roe in a pair of tighty whities swinging an axe in a pair of stiletto shoes. That's a warrior of light you just don't want to screw with!
On a serious note though, a lot of the new gear that's come out isn't as awesome as say..that coil turn 1 gear. I saw that and am still in love with it.
I think they are trying, but at the same time being creative. Maybe there will be a series of future sets that have heavier. Though on the other hand, there are a ton of options out there. I think that's where people get upset over, is that they get mad there isn't a helmet that's manly, but there is a ton of options out there to glamour on.
So, it's something to look at on both sides. Those prisms can be very expensive compared to what you know they cost. The only real work around here is asking a FC member, leveling up a craft for yourself or buying. Three options, one of them should give you what you need.
Your complaint is entirely subjective though and there's nothing SE can do about it. They either have to ask you personally what you like or just design something and hope they get lucky. Even if they started to churn out gear that you like, there's always going to be someone else who doesn't like it. What should SE do about them? Whenever they have different designs based on gender people complain about the differences (see: DRG and NIN AF. Look up the infamous "DRG belly window" thread). If they pick a single appearance for both genders, then we have players like yourself who come and complain that they think the gear is too masculine or too feminine (people complain about how effeminate caster gear is all the time). Even if SE were to always release multiple versions of each set that everyone can wear you'll still have people who just plain don't like how the gear looks so they'll complain anyway. It's difficult to please everybody. It's down right impossible when the subject is aesthetic design. SE can't win for trying.
People are also giving you a hard time, not necessarily because of your dislike for the gear's appearance, but because of your inflammatory wording in the OP and your refusal to take advantage of the tools that SE has already given you for just such an occasion. If you don't like the way something looks, you can simply glamour it to something else. If you think glamour prisms cost too much on the Market Board, you can easily and cheaply level your crafters to level ~50 and just make your own prisms. Or you can even gather the materials (they're all cheap, low level items) and ask someone to make them for you. If you refuse to do any of that I guess you're just SOL since SE has no real reason or obligation to give you more options in addition to what we already have.
Last year, there was a big fuss on the forum because there wasn't enough skirt / long robe for male / tank... and know we are on the other side... There's always people who complain because they don't see the big picture.
And I think there's already a lot of Armor...
Here a little list of set with "armor" look (some heavy, some lighter) :
- High Mythrite Cuirass of Fending
- PLD, DRK Eso gear (WAR is more Beasty looking)
- Gordian Plate Mail of Fending
- Asuran/Yash Hara-ate of Fending (samurai ?)
- Valerian Terror Knight's Plate Mail (ok, there's a long skirt)
- Adamantite Armor of Fending
- Adamantite Lorica of Fending (Soldiery reskin)
- Titanium Cuirass of Fending (ilvl 80 reskin : i really like this one)
- Titanium Mail of Fending (Wootz DRG reskin)
- Mythrite Hauberk of Fending (ilvl 100 reskin)
You have choice...
Nobody is saying there can't be more. The simple fact is most of the sets up until recently have been the tin can sets he likes. They branch out a little and its terrible! To be fair, they do have a budget they have to work within, and given that they have a glamour system, I would rather they not blow it ensuring everyone can have the exact set they want with each new tier. As others have said, he gets hate because he refuses to accept glamouring, which even at his claim of 50K per, is not that hard for a set, even though he could get someone to make them, or make them himself.
An example of the tin can sets, off the top of my head, so incomplete. (tank only examples, since that is what the OP was on about):
Iron/Steel/Mythril/Cobalt/Sentinels/Milita Curiass
Heavy Steel/High Mythril sets
Brayflox set
Scale mail sets
Haubergeons
Dark Divinity/Herklaedi
Allagan/Replica
Heavy High allagan/Replica
Flames/Serpent Elite
Heavy Darksteel
Heavy Darklight
Valour
Fighter/Warriors
Protectors
Wolfram
Phlegethons
Curaiss of the divine war
Varlets
Ironworks
Mythrite Hauberk
Noct
Demon
Wootz
Titanium
Dusk vigil set
Halonic
Adamantite
Valerian
Behemoth King
Yasha
Gordian
Ravagers
Creed
Chaos
High Mythrite
I would also include the Midan
Sets with heels for tanks:
Hellfire
Maybe VA, I don't think I have those.
But mainly the hate he gets is the foolishness and selfishness of the "I'm too cheap for prisms, so SE should dedicate resources to designing armor I personally like for each tier."
Looks like we had the same thought.
You're complaining about a little chest window and call it flamboyant? (did you see the pants? they have a pubic hair window and a testicle crack winow behind too, it's hilarious)
Yeah right, maybe you should take a look at Ranged/Caster/Healer gear - you'll be begging for that little boob window, just saying.
OP you need to ask for "MORE" options, feminine of manly for BOTH genders, and NOT asking for one think to not exist for other to do, valid point if you dont like the flamboyant gear on males, there manly gear for females too (im looking at the pecs armor from CT2), and its OK to exist and as much as you want to differentiate armor from male and females of the same set, there are also people that want it to be more alike (bellybutton dragoon AF might sound familiar)
BOTH OPINIONS ARE OK, if you like one stuff or another, just don't state your opinion dismissing the other. WE ALL CAN HAVE ARMOR SETS OF OUR LIKING!!!
That said... I want more female chest armor that bounces =)
I understand the need for creativity, and how that might bring out more unorthodox designs, and those are fine so long as they hold true to a certain amount of constants to keep in tact a "realistic-friendly" environment as a base set at least. If you would like to tank in a bathing suit, by all means glamour a bathing suit, but the initial design should be made in respect to an actual world in my opinion.
Stjephan Seijic's comics are always relevant
I don't know, if I can use a bow and arrow to defeat mushrooms, knights and dragons in close combat, then "practicality" and "realism" don't really matter too much. To each their own, the devs can't please everybody all the time.
Please note, you are playing a game called Final Fantasy.
Armor in a final Fantasy is unlikely to be completely realistic in design, even if it is full plate it will still some fantasy design cues. In line with the whole fantasy genre there are many instances of entire sets of male and female are that is entirely impractical and nigh on suicidal to wear, and yet the hero wearing it remains largely unscathed throughout.
Remember, we have two player races with tails, how realistic can armor be for unreal people?
Honestly, it sounds as though your desires for gear in this game would lead to a much duller game, and one that's a lot less fantasy and a lot more drudgery.
Truthfully, SE needs to do several things regarding their designs:
One, take some design lessons from Korean MMO's because they know how to design a plentitude of armours for a variety of tastes, ranging from full armour, mid, to skimpy.
Two, stop implementing armours that cannot be dyed.
Three, stop making beautiful armours for bosses (looking at you Kuribu) and not implementing anything similar for the user base.
Four, stop reusing old armours (reskinning/redying) and just renaming them to new armours. This is sooooo lazy.
Looks is everything. If it’s not pretty, I don’t want it. And quite frankly, I have not found much that SE has put out in quite a while to be “pretty” to my standards. I see what these other MMO’s are putting out and I’m just going “wtf is SE doing”.
While I agree with your other points as well, this is the one I'd love to see most at this point. Another annoyance I have is that they tend to use colors that are not found in our dye options. So we get these new shiny items, but they can't be dyed, and they also don't match any existing gear in game.
Sadly, I don't see them changing this any time soon. It's amusing to me that they now release glamour items with two versions - one a single color and one dyeable.
I'm all about variety but did every new male set really need a V neck cut?
I'm sure if we did a poll, majority of males wouldn't want 6" heels on their boots. "Looking at your ninja lore boots".
bleh, there's something to be said against all the boring androgyny that's made FF character designs so dull in recent games. Willowy glam rockers with feminine features, it's like the 80's never died in Sqeenix. I stand proudly against this erosion of manliness with full plate and a mustache.
Besides, Bowie was the only one who ever pulled that look off.
Would all of the males playing as cute female Miqo'te in combat bikinis be allowed to vote, or the females who like to dress their male characters up like pop starlets? I don't know why the playerbase (and indeed, the company behind the game) is so hellbent on bringing gender into everything when it's inherently meaningless as soon as you enter the virtual world ;)
I rock the crazy heels on the BLM wolf PVP gear, thank you very much.
Yeah, it must suck to be forced to wear a sexy outfit when you want to make a conservatively dressed character. How terrible for you.
Looking at the Ifrit set for male, looks very nice actually. Defintly wouldn't mind using it if I played a male character/if I ever get my alt up high enough for it.
Titan's probably gonna fill the "tin can" role (because they would be FOOLS to skip Titan/more summon-based gearsets), so please look forward to it.
I love how homie listed like 15+ different OLD sets of gear and says "deal with it"
I've explicitly made notions to make more options for new gear, not old
As said before. They're getting lazy. It shows.
Lol at this post.
And "homie" omg thanks for that. You made my day.
Three new sets, plus 3 glamour sets of old sets in a patch.... soooooooo lazy. Trololololo. And two of the new three become dyeable with the upgraded/savage version.
Homie... oh man... thank you.
Also 36 versions of a tin can, and an incomplete list at that... there are only so many ways you can dress a can.
Everything until now:
