PvP - Do we really want this kind of thing in Final Fantasy?

There we had PvP in the past! stop complaining!! if you don't like PvP just don't participate... it's so easy...

What just because you don't like Mc Donalds if you see someone eating Mc Donalds burger you gonna go up to them and tell them to stop eating because you don't like it? You would just F'ing ignore and just walk away... same stuff...

Completely false. PvP has never and will never be the central focus of WoW. It always has been PvE and will always be PvE with a healthy dose of PvP for those who like it.

um... FFXI had PvP also... you expect XIV to not have it? lol

I'm all for the tournament style PvP, could easily work.
World PvP I'm not sure only cos i would want to know how they plan to do it, as we can all visit each city state, unless they send us to war with each other but that seems unlikely.

Just please for the love of... can we stay well away from PvP based gear that is anything but different looking crafted gear or maybe alters but not really better stats on it.!

Ballista was awesome, i not talking about the 1 vs 1 shit you see on videos or the "booking ballista" diorama or something...

When i say ballista im talking about the 2005-2006 era, where you had 35 vs 35, it was intense.. i usually play at midnight cauz thats when JPs play and they coordinate and strategize unlike.."omg 300tp... im going in".

All about NINJA BLACKMAGES getting into enemy area with invisible, go behind them, SLEEEEEPGA, then the cavalry roles in. Its about SAM/RNG with soboro.. chasing down and killing!!, Its about being scared of galka Monks with massive HP! and soo many more.. out of my 7 years.. i went to ballista almost everytime sans LS event.

Arena/Ballista Type PvP always welcome!

The PvP is by choice if you decided to do it or not that all that matter's is you the player have the choice to participate or not in PvP not forced to! Also I'm pretty sure Yoshi even stated this fact and given example picture's his view on PvP I sugguest and revisit his thoughts and views on this subject I take the man by his word's not others.

I'm not a massive fan of PVP but I think it would be good for the game.

I would like the OPTION of PVP in the game, just for extra content. I think an arena style competition could make for an effective Gil sink and pass time. Even a specific territory that is kind of a "savage land" where PVP is a free for all would be interesting to see.

PvP Mini games would be interesting Of course we cant have blitzball, but something Recreational friendly would be nice. not all PvP has to be violent to make some poor sod(s) feel insignificant.

The method of PvP they are introducing is completely fine with me, and I plan to participate in the large scale battles. My only concern when Yoshi-P first started talking PvP was world PvP where people would gank and camp lower level people which is completely lame, thankfully that won't be the case so i'm all for it. To be honest if they can create something like the Battlegrounds for WoW (especially anything like Alterac Valley) I would be all over it, that was some serious fun.

You have the right attitude man. It doesn't take a PvP fan or a genius to see that FFXIV wont be able to keep up with the competition in the coming years if there is not some quality PvP. No PvP = severely limited subscriber base = less income for SE to improve the game in future updates. Bottom line.

Loved Ballista in XI, as long as the PvP is as heavily team based in this, I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. Quite the opposite, I see this as attracting more people to the game.

not a bad idea, though it has several frustration flaws that come with Domination type campains.

a simpler solution would be to have and instanced zone for 1 of the 3 gathering jobs where rare mats could be acquired, two free companies would be required at random. in Round one Company A would be required to protect there DoL from the encroaching Company B an secure as many Mats as possible before time runs out. in round two the roles would switch. it adds competition and reward to those who are successful, without the frustration of being dominated.

Say wut? Ballista was very popular back in FFXI golden years. Many people leveled several jobs just for ballista, and spent alot of time in them.
Although they could change some things here and there, they produced PvP in a great way. Although to score points you needed to kill someone (or their pet lol), you still had to do other things including scoring to win. It made it possible to play an actual game or just kill one another if your team was ok with it.

Ballista was one of the best ways I think any game handled PvP and I enjoyed it greatly.
Brenner was good as well, but not THAT different from Ballista. I don't know how you'd be in favor for one and not the other.

Also heres an option, dont play the PvP.
They said several times it'll be in another zone away from everything else.

There are many who would enjoy PvP play, or some kind of sport with PvP in it. Don't take away the chance, the OPTION to PvP just because you're not in favor of it.

In most games with PvP balance is a huge issue and makes the game rebalance classes over and over again. I really dont see this happening in XIV because classes can share skills. For example: Quickstride wont overpower archer because everyone can use it, Fleet of Foot wont overpower Lancer because, again, everyone can use it. A vast majority of 'pvp-breaking' skills are cross class and that in itself balances itself a lot. Having played and PvPd in Mabinogi (a classless game) its clear how allowing everyone to use mostly every ability balances the game's PvP out almost completely. Now, individual abilities will still need tweaking because they could be overpowered agains players but in that case the PvP version will have different effects than the PvE version (e.g. WAR Provoke, DRK Dread Spikes)

WoW's PvP isnt the only PvP system out there, it is also very flawed but so is the game itself. Just because WoW did it a certain way does not mean other games haven't/can't do it differently/better.

I want PvP in FFXIV but I would like if it is stuck is certain areas like a Coliseum or the Front lines like they are called. I'm not a PvPer but that option should be available for those who enjoy it.

That's already the plan. They have said many times that they will not be having open-world PvP.

At least with a PvP function it would give the elitists a legitimate reason to act like a bunch of pompous pricks. Go for it, and know that I won't be counted among them because I don't care to harass other players in such a manner. Just don't get between me and my Main Scenario quests.

You won't be able to harass players, so I don't know why you're saying this stuff. PvP is an optional event for which your participation is not required to enjoy the game, and takes place in isolated areas where people who do not want to participate cannot be harassed.

Didn't they say something about designated PvP areas on the world map? I would think that potentially people would wander into those areas either to farm for crafting materials or get to locations required for quests. That's all I was thinking when I posted that statement.

You said it yourself. They're designated for PvP. Why would your quests take you there? Unless it's a tutorial quest, of course.

You never know. I just don't want it to turn out like WoW did when I played on a PvP server. Getting randomly ganked by a high-level when I was skinning mobs.

Yoshida himself acknowledged that most FF players are not big fans of PvP and therefore he would never enforce PvP onto anybody. Moreover, the current PvP arenas aren't even players ganking players, it's players trying to do something to win against other players.

I'm not a hardcore PvPer but I see nothing wrong with it as it is always a good to take a break from scripted PvE fights. PvP is one part of a MMO where it really requires you to constantly think about your actions in battle since nobody is the same.

Also FF games should always be mainly focused for PvE but having the option for some great PvE encounters is always welcomed with open arms in my opnion.

I remember reading in one interview that Yoshi had an idea for special a "PvP-zone". Where upon entering you were automatically flagged for PvP and the vision was that Linkshells would need to work together and protect their gatherers who would gather in these open-PvP areas for PvP related materias.

I'd just like to say that for all of the people who don't care for PvP: Don't do it then. Yoshi isn't going to force it on you so there is no need to whine about it, it won't even affect you in the least. You don't want it, we get that. Some of us do want it so stop clogging up all the PvP posts with whines.

SE has almost no experience with PVP. I remember Yoshi saying he played DAOC at some point, so I suppose there is hope. I hate to be a pessimist, but I think it will be awful i.e. FFXI PVP (and I use the world "PVP" very loosely when describing it.) If they added siege warfare and areas that could be controlled and inhabited by warring LS's (like LS keeps or cities that the LS built) then I could be a pretty happy PVP'er, but I doubt there's enough player interest in that. PVP'ing with no consequences is boring. I want to take something over or have a goal other than getting more gear/kills. I want my victories to have lasting impact and my losses to be bitter. I think SE will take the smart approach and make it something to do on the side, but a guy can hope. Full-loot PVP and area conquest: Do it SE! I will harvest many tears.

Just because YOU have an interest one way or the other doesn't invalidate the "I don't care" view, which is perfectly reasonable.

I don't PVP, couldn't give a damn about it, however its presence in FFXI was benign to me, it didn't distort the PVE game (much) so it didn't affect me. Assuming SE make it equally a non-issue in FFXIV I really couldn't care if they do it or not.

It doesn't surprise me though that someone with your sort of attitude supports PVP, generally in games like WOW and Rift I find it's the rabid PVPers that exhibit the worst social skills.

Actually...i think the 3rd option "Dont care at all" is a good option.

I dont really care either, but i voted for PvP mainly because, its a "Thing" to do when nothing else might be fun.

I played WoW for 3 years, and did very little pvp,
battlegrounds however i did alot but not very much Areana stuff.

No, they didn't. You can't just aimlessly wander into a PvP area while gathering or anything like that. It's NOT WORLD PVP. PvP is only in special places you have to specifically choose to visit. You wouldn't be able to go into one by accident and just get killed.

Our producer/director is a huge pvper. That's all that matters.

As long as he's on board, pvp will remain a central part of the game.

Pvp in MMO's is completely crap as anything more than a lighthearted sport activity. But it's a small fee to pay for everything else that he does for the game, so I'll deal with it.

I'm 110% for PvP so long as it's in it's own area such as a arena or such.

I'd love to see a "Battle Grounds" type of Pvp mode where two teams of lets say 2, 4, 6, 8, or more would fight it out for control points or Flags.

They could even include PvP armor and PvP points :D

On the Lodestone they might even have their own section for arenas and ranks for the top players of the week, day, or all time :3

I want PvP, I regulary enjoyed brenner but found it lacking.

Classes outside of pvp don't have to be altered, you could have a status effect while in PVP that alters skills in your class, keeping PVP balances and PvE balance separate.

Yoshida has mentioned that he thinks its vital to make pvp optional. If you don't like it, don't play it. Not having it will only drive players that love pvp in mmo's it away towards ones that have it.

I'd like to see capture the flag PVP games like Brenner, but ones less restricted by gil means. It was fun if you could fund it, and though there weren't really rewards for it it was still fun to play with friends. It wasn't balanced but I think you could either do separate balances in and out of PVP.

I would hate for PVP to take over though. :/ And a giant pit where you can throw yourself is ridiculous sounding. Part of the fun of Balista was it took place on the outdoor map. It wasn't instanced and you could watch it if you liked. At the very least, if we do get medium scale PVP I'd like to watch it.
