While i personally quit worrying about them a long time ago, since I play dps and don't expect them, but they aren't entirely useless. There are unique rewards that can only be obtained by gaining certain amounts of commendations. If someone really wants one of those rewards then commendations are more important to that person. Though the highest amount ones are pretty much tank exclusives at this point requiring 3000 commendations. Being a friendly dps that hasn't taken a break since comms were added and I'm just at 597. I'll probably never see 3000.
I'm always pleasantly surprised when I get coms on my bard :P
It can be annoying when as a healer/tank/any class really - you know you worked your ass off to make the run as smooth as possible or you saved everyone from a terrible wipe but get no coms afterwards - but it's really not the end of the world. Just pat yourself on the back for a good job and start the whole process all over again!
If you really want commedations my FC leader is the whore among whores. He goes in says "Hello," "Good Job," "Thank you." Everytime all dem commendations.
I'm just that silent person in the background with the white noise people avoid. lol
I think it can also stem from the thought of "I bet they get loads of commends as Tank/Healer, they don't need em" and thus commend other people. Yeah may suck that you bring your A game but that is how you should be playing anyway. Can't win em all and some people don't care about commends at all. I've had plenty of runs where as soon as the boss was dead before I even had time to react and commend they were gone. Granted I always commend my opposite unless certain things arise to make me think otherwise. Horrible tanking, letting people die as a healer that was in control, pulling as a DPS, being rude.
Even as a rogue I often get commendations. Probably not because of my playing, but because I try and talk to people and help people through fights.
If you do your job right people might not know you did anything at all. If there is heavy magic damage I'll use apocatastasis on the tank and manaward on myself to make the healer's day less miserable. I sincerely doubt anyone's ever noticed and why should they? They're very busy doing their own thing.
I notice I seem to get more commendations when I'm lazy or make a mistake, rather than when I'm doing the very best I can and sometimes save a run when everyone else is dead (as dps, as in, mch/brd kiting boss and killing it or blm and keeping tank up with physick until boss dies).
Not even joking, about a year? ago, I was lvling whm and one whole dungeon all I did was regen (low lvl so cures not really needed) and decided to be lazy. Got 3 commendations.
Kept tank and other dps alive spamming physick as blm because healer died at 50% and we kill the boss? Zero commendations
I guess the lesson is, if you want commendations, you have to suck and be lazy, rather than play the best you can lol
Its worst.. when doing WoD.. the other Healer DC... you doing all the job... exit ... 0 Commendations (maybe the other Healer win all the commendations).. i dont know... but it is frustating. u.u
Talk, be funny, be patient and understanding, be polite, be courteous, be more than a really well played bot. I get commendations more often than not when I tank cause I switch to my Mog gear at the start and end, do a cheer and a little dance while I welcome everyone and see if we need to take it slow or go hard.
I usually /cheer for the party once dungeon is done, and quite often get plenty commendations. And it doesn't seem to matter that in which role I join.

I usually commend the one who dies the most or the lalafell.
I've actually had the exact same situation happen to me as my SCH on dungeons.
I don't mind not getting commendations, but I notice i seem to be less likely to receive them the worse the party is. I see a DPS pulling horrible numbers, another DPS pulling mobs from ahead, a tank that doesn't use CD's or only does single target threat generation.. despite all of this, I receive no commendation.
I've actually received waaaay more commendations on my SMN than either my PLD or SCH since expansion hit.
Out of curiousity, if that was a post by a DPS saying something like "Which one? The heals who wasn't casting protect or the tank who never used flash?"
Would he still be an elitist jerk, or is it only elitist when you point out someone doing crappy DPS or a DPS not using their support skills?
To be honest I'm usually busy with my role to keep track of every little thing my partners did through the dungeon. There's obvious stuff like how the tank pulled and handled the aggro, stuff that is noticeable if you pay attention like a dps hitting the wrong enemy, and stuff you're not gonna keep track of like who's using an optimal rotation.
In a normal run that went well and where nothing out of the ordinary happened I tend to commend the tank since he/she's the one directing the battle, or the healer if I'm tanking. But certain stuff in the dungeon may make me commend someone else, like someone explaining the mechanics or giving advice for a class, or someone taking advice positively. There's also that case where I went with friends or FC members and the DF person did so bad that no chance I'm commending him/her :P
Too true, but my point is that is irrelevant to DPS meters. You can still sound like a jerk bashing a healer or a tank, and you can sound polite when discussing DPS numbers. DPS Parsers don't create elitism. I've seen plenty of elitist players in games where there are no parsers (Guild Wars 2) and I've seen plenty of people who are not elitist using parsers (WoW, Wildstar and here).
No DPS close to death means that they actually did mechanics(very rare for PUG DPS). Maybe they got the coms out of pure shock.
If everyone was doing what they were supposed to, how do you determine who should receive your commendation? Nothing personal, but a lot of us will choose at complete random if such is the case.
This is great, lets keep up the show.
If someone is talking a lot in a dungeon they get mine. Even if they are superbad.
Sometimes I give commendations to new players who after a few mitakes learn and improves.
Also as a healer I get far more commendations than I deserve. Im not sure how many times ive used regen only and then threw a stone or two and then jumped about for a bit. And still got 3 commendations.
Healing in this game is toi easy so I dont feel like i deserve them
Personally, I think it would be better to rework the commendation system to maybe a rating system. You can rate all of your party members out of 5. That way if you notice someone was particularly bad, you could give them 0-1 starts. Or maybe they were just OK, give em 3. Maybe they blew you out of the water, give em 5. Then instead of a count of commendations, you receive an average rating.
As to Fendred's point, if everyone in your party did a good job, you could give all of them 4+ instead of having to choose randomly.
I was, in a way, agreeing with you. Parsers can be a useful tool but it has a lot of potential for issues, If there are problems now they will only get worse with using one. Not everyone uses mods and i find it kinda stupid to have them be required. i remember playing WoW and seeing people get kicked for not having "DBM". I feel that if some form of a mod ends up being critical to the playing of a game then the devs need to find a way to incorporate it into their systems rather than some 3rd party thing. If they have parsers, I think it would be best added by way of a personal parser, not seeing other peoples, only your own. You can go online or elsewhere to see other peoples DPS and the level, ilevel, and gear they were using so you can compare your numbers.
I don't comm anyone by default, only if they were exceptional....or exceptional compared to a terrible run that preceded that one.
elitist
1. A person who believes that they are superior to others (and thus deserve favored status) because of their intellect, social status, wealth, or other factors.
Basically, being a condescending douche bag over trivial things like "low DPS". Basically it's the arrogance that makes you an elitist jerk.
If a DPS were being arrogant over a tank, like bursting full cooldowns before the tank even touches the mob and then goes "L2 tank noob trash", then they are an elitist jerk potential purposefully griefing.
Uh....I didn't see where commendations were supposed to be performance based. You give a commendation to whatever party member you feel deserves it and you can use whatever metric you like -- or just be random. I usually give my commendations to new people to encourage them or to players who were polite/helpful during the run, especially if it was not the best run. Other than that, I just sorta randomly click on whatever name appeals to me.
I don't commend people for being good at their jobs, just like I don't expect commendations even if I play well. The fact that you expect commendations means you don't deserve them.
No one comm's dps. I tank, i get comms even when I am only paying half attention. I usually com the healer for keeping me alive unless a DPS completely carried the party. Most times though the healer gets my comm.
You don't get more Commendations for being a tank or healer that's rule 1 rule 2 ppl can give them out to who ever they like but if you feel you deserve it more for healing or tanking guess what? you don't!!!!! no one is forcing the jobs on you. So you get Commendations if you get them but don't ever expect them like you deserve them
I don't give commendations based on performance. Well, maybe, but here's basically the hierarchy:
1. Someone who pulls off an amazing feat that basically saves the entire party/dungeon/raid. This can be done by a party member in ANY role. :)
2. Someone who amuses me. Usually by chatting.
3. Someone who says anything at all that isn't negative.
4. A DPS.
5. Coin flip between tank or healer.
So whichever happens first on my list gets the commendation. ^.^
While I do like the idea of doing this, I just see anything like this allowing trolls or someone who is just mad for no reason to rate everyone a 0-1. You won the minion he/she was farming for? 0 stars. He pulled as a DPS and still died? 0 for all. Its just how I foresee it happening.
Good grief. OP reminds me of a little kid who throws a tantrum at the market when mummy won't buy her a chocolate. Even though she tied her shoes all by herself today!
Congrats op. You did your job, stop expecting people to lick your boots for doing it.
I don't think that would work...imagine people just giving you 1 star for the sake of trolling, I'm sure this would happen and it would be even more unfair than it is now.
Now on topic, my thread was a complete /vent. I was in a mediocre party, sorry if I sound like an elitist, I've been in many parties and this one was just especially bad, it was a neverreap run, people eating aoes in the first boss, people ignoring the bubbles, I killed 2 myself with broil + energy drain and still we had a couple explode and place 2 vulnerability stacks on everyone, people ignoring totems on the second boss, at some point I even had to grab two heads while the 2 brds were standing there hitting the boss (and they weren't far from the heads, the heads were right next to them). On top of that, the WAR was one of those full STR accessories dudes that pull half dungeon and receive damage spikes of half of his health in seconds, there was one time where he pulled those 4 nasty bees and the tree, I couldn't DPS myself (impossible, damage was too heavy) and the BRDs were doing mediocre damage, which resulted in the WAR getting final stinged 3 times, still, I wouldn't let him die and burn every single tool in my kit to prevent a wipe in that pull, which involved spamming adloquiums like a madman, burning around 6-7 lustrates and ending up with 1k mana, but it doesn't end here, tank continued pulling with me at 1k mana like nothing. Fine, my aetherflow just came on CD so I could still keep up, but I couldn't help but think that was just icing the cake.
And then, after putting up with such terrible party with zero wipes on my back due to giving 150% of myself while not saying a damn word (didn't complain about anything, absolutely anything, just stayed calm and helped as much as I could), I got zero coms. I felt frustrated so I came into this forum and /vented, and honestly, I regret it. You can argue my thread wasn't very friendly or very polite, but at least I was not launching insults or calling names to anyone, I was mainly frustrated at how unfair and biased I thought commendations were, there's no real need to compare me to a lion doing what we all see in that picture.
True AlphaFox, I was hoping that over time the trolls votes would be negated by the other votes. Like if 90% of people gave you 4, 5% gave you 5 and 5% gave you 1, then you'd be sitting at around 4/5.
I agree plenty of people won't vote on this, just as some won't commend, I just think this would be more useful for gauging your own performance (or at least be more interesting than the current system).
The person who helps newcomers positively always get my vote. And at least say "hi" at the beginning. To me it's really rude not to say anything at all.
OP: the people probably just didn't realize how good you're doing. healers go unnoticed unless we mess up and get ourselves or someone killed.
Ill give you cred for not RQ or cussing ppl out {we see far to many of that} but your other party members must have not felt that run was as
horrible as you so to them you did nothing that big or great you did keep them alive yes but that's a healers job and at the end of the day you had a bad run many ppl do and i'm sorry it was hard on you
I always give commendations, don't have a specific criteria, depends on the run, even in the messy runs (which usually turns the run more fun to play, because you have to leave your comfort zone).
