FC mate linked us to the Kotaku article and came to pay my respects here. You have my condolences.
Saw the article on Reddit. Having seen a lot of shitty behaviour on the forums and ingame, it's nice to see something that reminds me how amazing this community is. I just wish it were under better circumstances.
Condolences from Moogle.
I'd like to start off by saying that this is a terrible loss, and I want to send my deepest condolences to Codex's friends and family. The loss of a loved one is hard, especially at the holiday time.
I feel like I know this person and just had a random question to ask. We had a player that used to be in our Free Company on Balmung named Codex Aluuran that recently was going through something similar that my wife pointed out, as she had him as a friend on instagram. Does anyone know if he used to be on Balmung?
.... sadly all i feel is the lines from awnsers are appropriate
to all of my children to whom life flows abundant.
to all of my children to whom death hath passed his judgement
the soul yearns for honour and the flesh the after.
look to those, who walked before, to lead those who come after.
my condolences to his family, to the fc and to all of his friends. may he live on within all your hearts, and in your memories.
My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Codex. Though I did not know him, the feeling of losing someone you love is not foreign to me. I was unable to make it to Excalibur's vigil last night, but I offer a Flame salute in honor of a fallen fellow adventurer.

And as he was a Second Storm Lieutenant for the Maelstrom...

Best wishes from Odin. May Codex rest in peace.
My condolences to the players that knew him and to his family, may he rest in peace.

Did he dr...
My condolences.
Will the playerbase reaction be like this every time a FFXIV player dies?

If you hover over the tag it shows who put it there.
On topic... This was an overwhelmingly heartfelt response and I was especially touched by the image of Codex' name spelled out by players on the beach. May he forever walk in the light of the crystal.
Sorry for your loss. You have my Condolences
Well, death is, sadly, common. It is tragic when somebody dies, but people unfortunately die all the time. I don't think he's the first FFXIV player to die, and I'm afraid he won't be the last, either. It's a nice gesture to give condolences and hold in-game vigils, but that it's being done on servers he didn't play on, by people who knew neither him nor anyone who knew him, just makes me wonder if it's going to be like this for every upcoming death as well.
Wow, don't I feel so small/stupid. That tag was for another post on here, most definitely not this one. Guess that teaches me to be browsing the forums late at night when I should be in bed, I have removed the tag and apologize for what seemed like a really inconsiderate thing to do.
This overwhelming outpour of love and support warms my heart. People are so quick to say "it's just a game" and sometimes, in-game and forum negativity reaches a point where I'm ready to lose hope...But this was beautiful, and proves so much positivity. That so many friends and strangers would gather to pay their respect...it's wonderful.
My sincerest condolences from Sargatanas. May he rest in peace.
Honestly... I don't have an answer for that. But that's not something I'm thinking about when stuff like this happens. We can argue many things from this, which sure that's totally fine to do. But I'd like to focus about what this whole event personally made me feel and not so much how it got here in the first place.
I don't know Codex. I know people that knew him. I know how it is to lose someone. I would never find it a chore to have to pay my respects for him or anyone else who passes on. To me, empathy is a hard thing that I think the whole world could use more of, especially to people behind the monitor.

RIP Codex. You brought a good gift to the many denizens of Eorzea.
Mmm depends. Even in passing, the death of someone can become a tiring occasion. Eventually, it just doesn't become as painful of an experience to sympathize with... that's just how it is to be human. The sadness is still there, but you just become more adjusted to it. The individual who passes away also needs to be someone of consequence, and by that, I mean someone who others know (or liked). Just like IRL, we don't know who it is that passed away today, who will pass away tomorrow, etc... and as a result, we don't mourn for them. And just like you said, death is common IRL, and so we don't hold it to be anything expected for strangers to mourn (under common situations and circumstance).
Until the time comes that IRL death becomes a common occurrence within the world of Eorzea, such events like this will generally be handled in similar manner, again, assuming this person has friends willing to remember them in such ways. Of course, friends aren't the only people that can do this. Strangers can easily help to pay their respects to someone, as seen in this case. It just comes down to whether or not someone is willing to put in that effort.
Condolences from Famfrit.
*Bow of respect*
May his journey to the Lifestream be one of grace and beauty.
Rest in peace dear Codex.
May his song forever last...Rest in peace fellow bard of the light.
My condolences to his family & friends both in the realm and outside.
No, it won't.
The only reason it got so "out there" was due to Redditt and Kotaku and other media places picking it up that the "story" was fed to.
I don't see the massive outpouring for my friend and FFXI/ FFXIV player that passed a few months ago.
Oh that's right. We never announced his passing except to past/present LS/FC members and friends.
My condolences.
I see your point, i still remember a beta tester who passed before the release of the game, a friend of his made a thread but we couldn't freely access the game back then. This is just an idea, but i think we could do this every year to remember those who are no longer with us, not only Codex.
No one is promised tomorrow. These sad events could of happened to anyone of us in a day. And regardless of if we knew him or not, Someone out there did.
Someone lost a son, brother, friend, enemy, lover and beyond in one single moment so I pay my condolences to all who knew him and respects whether he is on my server or not because this one person could of been just as easily one of those who are very close and dear to my own heart. ♥
