On Stormfur, I named my retainers according to what they are, and what their jobs are.
Stoneclaw = miner (miqote)
Jadescythe = botanist (lalafell)
Darktalon = dragoon/hunter (miqote)
Seadragon = fisher (au'ra)
On my alt, Hex Pathcrosser, I decided to give them silly names. They are all lalafells:
Brownnoser
Bootlicker
Applepolisher
Shopwoman, Bankwoman, and Fashionlady. I don't care to waste time to name my storage boxes. Unless they start following me around and killing things as a companion or waving leaf fans and dancing to entertain me like im some kind of powerful lord/king/hero.
Xenovia - Hyur Highlander. She is big, she is strong, she is miner.
Momody (like lala from Uldah adventure guild but with "y" in the end, cuz Momodi was busy) - Lala botanist
Nekomimi - Miqote fisher.
Sintharia - another dragon name from WoW. Au Ra with my appearance. And BLM (hunter) too. Gear her with items I dont need (250 ilvl from alex normal).
