Corporation / Partnership Tax Attorney (JD/CPA)
I am a full-time Pharmacy Technician for a federally funded mail order pharmacy. I do everything from taking orders from patients over the phone, processing prescriptions, contacting doctors' offices, dealing with health insurance companies, dispensing/filling medications, and even packing orders for shipping. There's so much to learn and know, but I have quickly come to enjoy my job.
Not to be a party pooper or anything. But it seems strange, that people are so willing to reveal information about themselves. Perhaps it is all lies or make believe just like the character, but I think people are sincere.
I am totally NOT against people putting threads like this up, because it make for good data collection and research. But didn't we play this game to get away from work? And didn't we want to play make-believe so we have our characters and have a level anonymity. So it is kind of perplexing that people gladly bring real-life into game.
I know I am new here, and I don't understand everything. Would some on care to explain?
Because it's fun to see what people do! ^^ And not everyone thinks RL is something to flee from completely... ^^;
eta: Right now, I'm talking politics through psn chat with one of my FC members. That's about as real world as you can get, but it doesn't affect us being a black mage and roegatank when we play FF later on today! XD
Different people play for different reasons. I don't really play FFXIV to escape the real world, I just like MMOs, and the interactions that go on in them. I mean, look at the job diversity in this thread, and any one of them could someday become a friend in game. I know in my dinky little city that I would never interact with this kind of diversity. I just think the social aspect of MMO is fascinating.
Walt Disney Imagineering, not going to go much deeper into detail there ;p
I am going to school to earn my BS in nursing = RN
I earn money for school and gaming as a dancer.. yah that's it.. im only doing it to put myself through college. OR i am living off savings and let my bf pay for my sub because im too poor. neither choice is very glamorous :p
3d Artist in the video game industry.
Legal and Engineering Assistant. Going to school as well since I'm not exactly where I want to be. But it pays the bills and gives me a good enough living, so I can't complain. :)
Software developer for a telecommunications company.
I have one co-worker who is into video games, but he favors FPS and action games while I like RPGs and some sub-genres of strategy games. Neither of us have yet talked the other into trying any of our favorites.
Arcade place mannager, designe and system management
With regards to the person asking about why people would share personal info like this in such a public space: While I obviously can't speak for anyone but myself, I do it because I feel it helps promote a bit of a sense of community with other posters to know a bit about the person behind the posts. It also helps humanize them, rather than just have us all remain as text on a screen. It's what I liked a lot about these forums from the 1.0 days, as I felt even the CM's participated in the boards as both individuals and CMs. People actually got to know/be friends with them!
I've always wanted to know a lot more about everyone on here, honestly. Maybe we have something in common other than this game!
HP developer
Graphic Design, Photography, Videography =)
What pushed me to make this kind of thread, aside from wanting to read something different other than complaints or requests related to the game, was also to look at the community from another perspective. Right now, there aren't many jobs in-game, and when someone tells you "I'm a DRG", yeah, you don't feel particularly charmed. Anyone in game can be one.
But it's nice to imagine these avatars as jobs and classes that can't be in-game. At the same time, it's nice to learn that behind all these real-life career there is a gamer. I've loved all the responses so far, and when I'll meet IRL someone doing the same job these people do, I already know my first thought will be "I wonder if this guy/girl plays too? What in-game job would he/she be?"
It's really as simple and fascinating as that.
I repair computers, cash register equipment, printers, RF scanners, etc, for a clothing store chain in the USA.
I work as a Deli Clerk at a grocery store.
I work in the Hard count/Soft count department of a major casino and resorts company. I spend most of my day verifying large amounts of money and locating counterfit bills.
Its fun work, but I hate having to be at work by 5am. Im not a morning person...
I was going to school for Early Childhood Education, but after interning at a daycare I decided it's better to be homeless then try to be a male in a daycare. I loved the children but the women treated me like dirt, acted suspicious of me all the time, and in general treated me like I didn't belong there. Ironic since while I actively took time to get to know my kids and play with them, these same women would sit texting on their phones as their kids would be climbing through the bushes and hitting the windows to other classes.
Im a sheperd.
IT/Administrative position for one of the departments at a state university. Dem state benefits!
What's funny is that I graduated with a Philosophy degree though. I'm too lazy for law school.
There is a big of a difference between saying what you do for a living, and giving out the address and information that could lead someone with suspiscious intent to know more about you.
If you don't want to 'play' this little game of a thread, you simply don't. No harm done, none taken.
Being on Forums it's already being away from work..
Welcome to the community of Eorzea! ^^
*And as for me, I really am an Actor ;)
**Forgot to mention: as you been into the Internet, if you are a bit paranoid, pretty sure you know that every traces that you do is collected somewhere. Hope you can still live with it, cause that's been there since a very long time, even before the Internet.
OP - Great thread, nice for a change ^^
I don't think this is nearly as personal as some of the other things I've seen posted.
With photo search engines and people posting pictures of themselves, those are the things that worry/scare me. Almost immediately all your information can be found if you are into social media in the slightest.
All in all, I think this thread is fun. Sometimes it's hard to get to know people behind the charade of a character. What do they do? Do they have kids? How are they outside of the game world?
blue collar in the oilfield. nothing spectacular, I work in a shop rebuilding and testing pressure control equipment.
UI Engineer here.
Nothing at the moment, currently attending school and less than a year away from my associates. Was planning to find a side job but now I am thinking I will wait and just apply once I get my degree. So for now my grandma whom I live with pays for my sub.
Network and information security with the (Ch)Air Force here.
I just work part-time at a Delicatessen whilst I finish my College Diploma. Three more weeks and I'm going into Horticulture (and doing everything like a level 50 botanist).
Another Software Developer here.
So jelly right now. That's, like, a childhood dream for me. I know working with horses is hard work (not, like, working on crab boat hard but tiring nonetheless) as a kid, there was a woman who lived in the house with my family had horses (we lived on just shy of an acre of land). To me, getting to help feed and care for the horses was a special treat. Going with her to her mother's (who bred and sold APHA registered horses) to see her mother's horses was akin to Christmas.
I'm a starving artist. Literally.
Haha, thank you. I really am happy with my job. The pay is bad (I struggle to not end the month in the red most of the year), but at least I'm one of the lucky people who managed to do a job they wanted to. Training horses has been my dream pretty much since elementary school (prior to that, my ambition was to train dinosaurs, but then I had to face reality and admit that there'd be not enough space or demand of trained dinosaurs in the world for me to make a stable living with it, so I opted for horses instead.)
