HUGE CONNECTION PROBLEM

As i've previously posted in threads of this subject from what i gather, the issue here is the "middle men" so to speak, i have been talking with one of devs over reddit about the issue, i've ran multiple tests over varying lengths using winmtr whilst playing and also not playing.

Below is a 4 hour (roughly) trace to the moogle eu server from Slovenia.

As you can see the Frankfurt and Amsterdam hops have a reasonably large spike of a little over 700ms and then the second to last hop has close to 500ms. this trace was left on while i wasnt playing so i cant comment how these spikes felt ingame.

Now, the strange thing about this is that when i did start playing last night, whilest running a tracert i had two tiny spikes whilest in a duty finder (< 1second) then at the end boss a spike which was roughly 3 seconds. the tracert found no problems along the route at this time.

This route was over 20 minutes while inside duty finder.

Now this could be because (probably likely) the instanced content uses different IPs? anyone know of them if that's the case? other than this, i cant see why i had such huge spikes whilst playing and then the tracert to moogle showing nothing.

Secondly, it would be really great if we can all get an official statement on this issue, its obvious this isn't just one or two people, sure its not the majority, but it is pushing people away from coming back, re-subbing and wanting to play.

If anyone would like to know how to use winmtr please let me know, i can write you a short guide so we can get some hard results for the devs to hopefully look into..

Didn't see this one in addressed/reviewing, but I posted as much info as I could in the other one. I can relate the information here as well, but it's so frustrating to be unable to play for a solid 3-4 days.

Edit: unable to play for a whole week now.
And I'm still paying for this.....

I sent in a report today, because it was heinously bad. I was able to get in about three times, but couldn't do anything aside from walk. No menu loads, no chat loads, no message of the day/welcome message at all. The most I got was entering a sanctuary when I finally got into Aleport from where I'd logged off by the Spawning Grounds an entire week ago because I haven't been able to get back in.

Aye, been having the same problem as you, sept I bought the game and got a free month. If this isn't resolved when my trial is up I'm uninstallng and forgetting about it. It causes me too much rage

need to diagnose your route to the servers in Canada. you may very well find there are issues interfering before you even get into Montreal, much less to SE's servers. This is an issue your ISP needs to address--either by revisiting their peering agreement with the Tier1 they are using to get you into/across Canada, or switching you to use one of their other partners to get you there.

this has been gone over repeatedly on these forums... and for the most part those that have run the traces to the proper servers have found this to be true. Lately, Level3 has been flagged for having the most problems... but it is a moving target, so the offending party changes periodically. It's nothing new... it's been going on for well over a decade. Briefs have been filed repeatedly with the regulatory commissions to try to enforce fair practices amongst the peering partners (most recently it was TATA and Level3 going after the big ISP's like TWC, Comcast, Verizon, etc.). But they've made little to no headway on their end, so it basically falls back to those of us that pay the ISP's to push them to clean up their act.

If you find signs of high congestion/packet loss issues in your traces, forward them to your ISP's Tier3 support. They are the ones that have to escalate this, not the Tier 1/2 guys that answer the phone or come check your local cables or even the localized node. These issues are frequently rooted deep into our routes, and it takes a higher level department to resolve it. Your ISP CAN and NEEDS to resolve it. They have the power to clean up your route one way or another... just need to hold them accountable to do it. After all, a large portion of your ridiculous internet fees pay for the customer service department and it's payroll.

This has NOTHING to do with our ISP. I've had this problem for months. I lived in Minnesota using Comcast. I recently moved in with 3 other people that all play the game and do not have the problem. I now live 5 hours away and use a different ISP, Time Warner, and still have the problem. NONE of the THREE other people that I live with have this problem.


This is an account bound problem.

I don't know if this is account bound, or server, or ISP hops. I do know that after every or every other numbered patch, I suffer 90K issues followed by lobby errors. This will go on for a day to a week and then mysteriously fix itself.

This has been a repeating issue since launch and SE can't seem to stabilize their connections before this starts happening. I would gladly wait an addition 2 or 3 hours on patch day for them to wave a magic wand or sprinkle fairy dust so that no one has to be subjected to this most annoying problem. It has been a year after all.

When Patch 2.35 went live, I got disconnected via Error 90000 about every 5-10min. And now ever since the hotfix/maintenance, my disconnects have actually INCREASED in frequency to about every 2min. WTChocobo?!?!

As detailed earlier in the thread, that IP is NOT tied into the game. Need to be using the IP your client actually uses (or at least your actual lobby server) so that you are hitting a route to Ormuco (SE's ISP) and then a server actually used by the game. The Canadian IP's start with 199, and most of the Japan ones will start with 124.

TATA started having issues last night as well as the ongoing problems with Level3. TWC switched me back to Cogent lines via Atlanta, and my connection is once again stable.

Hate to keep beating the dead horse.... but once again proof that there IS something your ISP in fact can do about the issue when it is found to be in route to Ormuco.

I am having Losses from ORUMCO Routers heading to SE Servers. No local problems from my ISP I had run lot of ping tests and traceroutes with no issues until I do it to SE Servers I see packet drops and latency when reaching ORUMCO.

I'm getting DC every 5 minutes since yesterday's night. 90k errors all the way.

I am a member of one of the largest and most active FC's on Coeurl server, at least a quarter of our membership are having issues with lag and inability to log in to the game because of 2002 errors in the lobby and 90k disconnects in game. Lag is causing havoc with raids and events not to mention lower levels trying to run dungeons and do quests/leves ect.

That's alot of people from all over the world to suddenly, out of nowhere, have the exact same problem at the exact same time. There IS a problem and it is NOT user side. Our FC isn't the only one having this problem, we have been hearing about the exact same difficulty happening to FC's and players server wide.

Exactly the point that has been made over and over in various threads on this issue. It is typically not a local problem, so when you call in and talk to the tier1/tier2 guys (that handle localized issues), they find nothing. The problem is typically upstream, between you and SE's ISP. As I tried to outline in another thread (complete with maps from the Tier1 ISP's mind you, this isn't speculation here), there are a limited number of pathways into Canada that we ALL have to use. It's like 8 from the US side, and one or two that come directly from from the UK into Canada. Everyone else around the world gets routed through the US, mostly through Southern California or the North East, then up through these limited paths into Canada. Note that all these routes are not used globally across all ISP's. There are a few Tier1 ISP's, each one controls a few of these routes. So from the US, you may have 3 optional ISP's as a routing partner, each one with only 2 or 3 routes into Montreal). If your route is bad, your ISP can either contact that partner for assistance or switch you to another partner.

For instance, there is a MAJOR trunk that runs from Tokyo to LA. If Cogent subscribers in North America want to get to/from Tokyo (as In SE Japan), they are likely to be sent through LA to get there. If there are issues with the lines in the LA area, it can dramatically impact ALL Cogent users in NA trying to communicate with Tokyo. Note that Cogent is a Tier1 ISP who YOUR ISP has peering agreements for connecting you to Tokyo--AT&T, TWC, Verizon, etc. typically do NOT run you everywhere on their network alone, but often use a third party to get you to someone else's network. Likewise, congestion can build up really quick around all the centralized exchange points like LA/San Jose, Boston, Chicago (hello, NSA scan we all go through), New York, Nova Scotia, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal--that's just a handful of the common choke points, there are others but the names escape me.

So, basically, when it goes bad for one of the big 3 peering/transit providers, it can impact entire REGIONS at once. This is why when you look at the maps for various services at the downdetector.com site, you will see problems pop up consistently in the same regions, even though you are dealing with different last mile ISP's like AT&T, Comcast, TWC, Verizon, etc. The "middleman" networks that provide the peering/transit to other people's networks are having issues along specific ports/routes and affect a widespread number of users all at once.

Think of it like the PS3/PS4 issues with PSN--when it has issues (or Sony takes it down for maintenance), the consoles have access issues because this game relies on PSN for access. Likewise, if the Cogent/PsiNet peer exchanges are having issues getting people through to Ormuco's VLAN, then EVERYONE assigned to that route has issues, but those that are using TATA may not because they aren't having congestion issues at that time.

This is why it is so important that you make sure you are dealing with at least Tier3 support when addressing the matter with your ISP. They are the ones that can provide escalation to conduct a proper investigation and contact the people that can adjust your route. It's not the guys at your nearby office that can swap modems/cables/connectors/traps/splitters.... this is a much higher tier of the network that needs to be addressed higher up the chain, typically in another city or state.

How very unfortunate for FFXIV:ARR to be connected to so many unreliable ISPs that keep their players (from all over the world, east and west coast US and all over the map betwixt the two, Canada, England, Japan, Malaysia, Kuwait and all points in between) who play the game on consoles and computers, through Steam and not, from connecting to the game at the SAME TIME...

Gosh, what horrible, completely coincidental, luck for such a large company! They must just be heartbroken for all those poor customers that just happen to be connected to them through such a shoddy system.

Maybe they should contact other game companies who aren't having such a large scale and widespread issue and see if they can't find out why their games are fine but sadly it seems the interwebs doesn't want FFXIV customers to play their game anymore?

Guess you missed that it is just 3 ISP's betwixt the US and Canada that are in control of the traffic. If level3 is having issues at even just 1 of their 2 trunks into Canada from the NY/MA area, then half of their customers are impacted. That means 50% of all players coming through the Eastern Seaboard via Level3 as their partner are impacted. That can be TWC, Comcast, AT&T, Verizon... any number of the last mile ISP's that are using them as their routing partner to Montreal.

In that scenario, said ISP's can either work with Level3 to address the peering issue, or switch to one of their other providers... TATA, who has 3 trunks from the US, or Cogent who also has 3. But... then again, if just one of their routes into Canada is having issues, then that is 33% of those customers. And so and so and so forth.

The ISP that you pay for internet service is NOT the one carrying you into Montreal. It is a THIRD PARTY. And the options for that third party are so limited that when one is having issues, a LARGE number of users are having issues ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

Been having 90k since patch, every 15 min or so. Really annoying... On PS4 if it matters, Comcast, Florida here.

If they are connecting to the Canadian Data Centers, then yes... they are potentially impacted as well. It can also apply to the Tokyo servers as well, depending on the route they are taking. Intercontinental connections can be even more susceptible to this issue because they may have even more limited paths to follow. Follow the path from Australia and surrounding islands for instance. Go look at the maps linked in that post if you aren't familiar with their routing woes. When it comes to interconnectivity between different companies networks, there is a big choking point at the peering/transit level. That is where the bulk of this instability has been found.

Oh, and as for the England reference... it was documented about a year ago to be an issue with a routing partner for the BT subscribers (think it was O2/Orange or something) where they had to work with their routing partner and SE to track down an issue with the handling of their traffic. Something to do with the packets getting a lower priority and getting delayed/discarded in route through the UK. It was posted at the forums for BOTH games, as well as on the ISP's forums as well. This is a very common issue that has existed ever since I started online gaming in 1996. There is plenty of precedent for it... you can find it related to a host of other games by different companies, even some hosted here in the US (LoL, GW2, LOTR, Blizzard's game library...).

Sony has been having issues with PS4 and PSN since the console launched, was especially bad last week with the DDoS attacks also. Their still having issues... not sure if it's the same attacks or the usual stuff. Their map at downdetector doesn't look too good at the moment for Europe... also still showing the normal issues along the US coasts. With how much the PS4 version depends on PSN, this could be a factor at play, regardless if Comcast has gotten it's act together or not... but both Comcast and TWC have been having their share of issues across the Southeast and other regions as well (the pending merger under review doesn't sound good for us either). Again, this map will update and may show different regions with issues later, at present Florida has light congestion, but there is a band of issues cutting across the Southeast that could be at play:

Sorry I didn't get into this earlier... duties started queuing up steadily again and I wanted to be able to load these maps for demonstration. But, yeah... the PS4 crowd has been having it rough for a while now because of Sony's issues with their network that are compounding matters even further. Might still be worth getting your routes looked at though... if you don't use the PC also, you wont have a solid picture of your specific server unless you can capture the IP the PS4 uses through your router's admin. You can forward the lobby server addresses to your ISP's Tier3 folks for testing though. They run from neolobby01.ffxiv.com through to neolobby06.ffxiv.com. The odd numbered names are for Japan, the even ones are for Canada.

Oh well, what's new? These problems existed several months ago (as per other threads in this forum), and we are the fortunate players to receive this misery.

Thanks for the downdetector map Raist, playing from Switzerland myself and can almost set the clock by how regularly I'm getting 90k'd off the server.. which is about every 15 minutes at the time of writing.

I have a MASSIVE amount of 90002 errors since a little while back. It varies between a few / hour to a few per MINUTE. Interestingly enough, NOSGOTH, another SQUARE ENIX title, is ALSO giving me constant disconnect issues.

No other game on my PC has these issues. Everything runs fine, except FFXIV: ARR and NOSGOTH. The only two SQUARE ENIX titles.

I'm stated in Europe with 100/100 MB/s.

I just want to be able to play without constant debilitating lag. I don't have this problem with any other game I play.

I got issues as well mainly last night. I got disconnected and could not get back in, and the website wouldn't work either. I play on Odin and it was frustrating because I lost all the material I was crafting with when I got disconnected.

I get lag every single day 7pm-1am same time every day... stop...go....stop....go...stop...go.... makes end game content unplayable... FIX THIS SE! this is between you and LV3 I called my ISP and the issue is not there.

Same man its the worst it has ever been, the npc's freeze with lag and when you try to fight.

Input lag kicks in and you cant do your secondary move to chain to your 3rd you have to wait to stop lagging people run and stop and run and stop.

like im about to 90k or something.

Square Enix. Please stop sitting on your hands and fix the awful lag on the Leviathan server. We all pay good money to have fun but as it stands at the moment several of my friends and I are seriously looking for another game. PLEASE HELP.

Yeah, I noticed after the recent patch, my game disconnects a lot and it makes it difficult to play the game. Considering I'm hardwired and have had absolutely no issues since hardwiring, I'm starting to get irritated.

An increasing amount of 90ks for me since patch 2.38, and it always happens at the worse times.

I disconnect like wildfire every 5-10 minutes, then takes about 5-7 mintues for me to reconnect due to 3102. I've already lots two alexendrite maps today, and just now I lost my PF party for farming. Never had this much of an issue with connectivity or reconnecting until 3.28.

4 disconnects in the past 2 hours due to 90k error then 3102 error for 3 minutes each time. Constant issues every day since the last patch. Router logs show a constant internet connection so it has to be the game servers.

It's almost impossible to do any group activities.

Please fix this asap!

I can't do any Frontlines anymore 90000 and 90002 all the god damn time. I can't stay in for a minute even. >_< I'm bored to death. 2.38 is my doom :( PLEASE fix this ASAP.

You say in your recent maintenance notes that you have successfully resolved connection issues on Primal data Center.

You have not.

I just spent 3 frustrating hours being disconnected repeatedly about every 5-7 minutes. Seriously. Like 30 times. I wish I could remember the names of the group I did the XDR with. They should be given a special once-in-a-lifetime mount for their patience. I was healing it and I was 90k'd at least 7 times in that run, several of which caused wipes.

I have tried everything I know on my end (hard reboots) and everything but FFXIV seems to be working superb. It had been happening over the past week but with nowhere near the frequency that I have encountered tonight.

I consider the game completely unplayable as it stands now. I don't get to play that often and it is a waste of my money if, when I have the time to play, I cannot play. So if it continues that I cannot play, due to no fault of mine, the decision logically follows that I cannot pay.

Played frontlines yesterday....got 90k'd three times during that single match. As soon as I left the base, I got the first 90k. After loading back in, about 10 seconds later got the 2nd 90k. Then after I stepped off the base again later on in the match, I got the third 90k.

In all honesty, I've never seen that happen to me before in frontlines. And I've really been having technical issues with my game since 2.38 patch. I'll get the DC symbol next to my name at times, some lagging where everything freezes and catches up later.

I'm not sure what to do about this. It's not my internet connection because that works just fine, and I am hardwired. Help?

I got 90k'd today while I was just standing in front my free company housing; I had stepped away into the kitchen only to look back about 5-10 mins later to see an error code. The lag has been crazy bad for me lately and I've been disconnected multiple times this week. Hopefully this can get resolved soon! I'm almost afraid to run dungeons due to the fear of getting disconnected in the middle of it!

I have been having huge lag problems recently too. Couple of days ago I almost lost the High Allagan Staff which I have been waiting to drop for months, luckily my party passed quickly, I got 90k'd as soon as it hit my inventory. Took me ages to log back on so I was on edge about it rolling me back or something and losing the staff.

Please fix this, its rendering the game nigh on unplayable, I haven't even been able to progress my Nexus light farming because of this.

Now I can't be on more than 5 minutes before I get booted off and I can't even teleport, see my friends list, etc. This is getting to be ridiculous...
