I feel comfortable with my sexuality, truly, it's running around in basically lingerie that I didn't feel so comfortable with. Not wanting to wear very exposed clothes =/= sexuality problems. Seriously.

Wear something else. Problem solved. No mage is forced to wear that gear.
You know the subligar is probably the manliest thing in the game. While yes... Its design lead to the creation of the modern day two piece bikini. Its origins can be traced to Greece as it was the choice of wear of its athletes, and in Rome the staple undergarment of gladiators both male and female. C'mon guys and gals... gladiators. I know you can find it being warn by other cultures, castes and classes but when one of them is a person who's primary profession is fighting for the adoration of thousands I rest my case. While its primary use was as an undergarment there are many cases of gladiators wearing just his/her subligaculum and nothing else and winning. And must I remind everyone that we are playing a medieval-esque fantasy role playing game? This is going to be full of old timey clothes and armor not practical for this day and age. All I m saying is rejoice and celebrate on this article of clothing, its history is steeped in the clashing of steel and the shedding of blood.
Thought I had seen this post before. I probably said something similar then too already. haha
this thread makes me laugh so hard ^_^
Here, this will explain everything.

At least it's not the subligar pants. I refuse to wear subligar pants on male characters.
What are you talking about?! I want vanity slots just so I CAN wear this!!!
Yeah, personally I don't like wearing subligars and wont wear them no matter how good the stats are on them, just no.
But other than that I'm perfectly ok wearing armor that gets stronger the less fabric it has on it as long as the design is good. Same with any unisex armor, I'm all for it.
I just wish men got as many different haircut choices in games as female characters do. It's just ridonkiulous how many great haircuts are ignored because we have to only get boring variations of the same freaking short hairstyles for some nonsensical reason in all games while women get a metric ton of choices and styles.

PS > Wanna know what's odd? I often see female gamers complaining about being stuck with said high level armor with too little fabric (that often looks great on them), while I usually get grumpy about being stuck wearing freaking bulky plate armor that gets increasingly more ridiculous the "stronger" it's supposed to be. Just like the comic posted by Mahstir, I'd happily trade the bulky awful looking heavy plates for something lighter and better looking that gave me the same stats.
In the end it's all about options man, to customize your character to your liking. And unisex is a nice first step.
Here's an idea. Don't wear it. Nobody is forcing you to. Fact is, FFXIV has multiple styles of gear to wear, it's accepting and acknowledges different sexes, orientations, etc. Just because you don't happen to like "skimpy outfits" for a male character or whatever, doesn't mean others think the same (I'm not speaking for myself here, as I have a female character, but choose to wear less revealing attire unless it's an event or something else happening.
There's plenty of options available, and is inclusive to everyone. You don't speak for everyone.
That set was designed as a cosmetic piece in 1.0.
With the lack of a vanity system it also had decent stats.
If you hate it so much, wear something else - you do have options.
If you refuse to wear something else, then stop complaining.
That armor actually is a bra on girl characters and looks ok.
Its pretty easy to say that its optional and that you can get a different gear. This is true, but how does 1 get it?
They are limited by level being too high or low. Gil and drop rates. Stats.
Therenis also the fact that some gear can't be colored.
What if I wanna wear my battlemage robe than the stock whm robe? I can do it, but at reduction of stats that I need.
I'm hapy we can toggle off headgear... if only we can do the same to accessories
Hit the nail on the head! The armor that the OP is complaining about is pretty much the only set I've seen (not including swimwear) that is skimpy like that (well..possibly the subligars too I suppose, though even they are usually more covered). Those armors are few and far between in this game, and there are other options he could pick (HQ crafted gear for his level comes to mind as an easy thing to pick up).
In the end what makes one person feel sexy and amazing can make another one go "ugh". So having choices is key. I've never once advocated for taking any armor completely out of a game, or changing it.. however I have always supported more "realistic" armor options. Realistic meaning.. not leaving all of my vital organ places completely without armor. I'm sure some people think games don't have skimpy enough armor, and that's fine too.
Sorry about the hairstyles thing. I honestly don't play male characters very often so I can't say too much regarding options there.
Also, just for funsies.. lol at the top definition http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Subligar
