I believe the addition of a player residence feature would give a good rationale to regularly returning to one's home city-state and should be considered.
I miss my moghouse.. and my gardening.. :°( But i see there are INNs in the main cities already so i think it's only matter of time....
This sounds like a fan-fic more than anything reasonable imesho.
I don't want to be rude of course, as an idea it is a good one but you've gotta be able to understand how much effort SE can and should give for a feature like this. Especially when company headquarters are already "on the way", it makes implementing this kind of a feature even less important of a task.
It's not going to be the same as in XI, but without a doubt it is not going to be any worse either, especially if it matters more for over-all gameplay than XI's mog house did. I really think we should look at how the company feature shapes up like and then give feedback based on that concept instead of making them build both our own housing and company housing, perhaps making both systems lackluster and not polished enough. I don't think this kind of system is so good that it deserves two features. Most MMO's don't even have single player housing-type feature. However, if for some reason Yoshida has scrapped the company headquarters idea then this concept of yours can and should be given more attention.
A couple of things with that theory.
First, we don't know what company housing would be like in the first place, if at all.
Secondly, they could be linked, like one of my suggestions with a central hub for the whole company/linkshell, and private houses surrounding it that individual players can customize.
Finally, whatever can be used for company housing, could simply be used for player housing as well. as the system is already in place, it's quite easy to adjust it for private housing as well, as the models would be there, and instanced areas, and more. Besides which, we WILL get our own residences. This is not up for debate. It's something everyone wants, or at least wouldn't mind, and it's something greatly missed from FFXI. The question is simply whether housing would be tied to companies, or not, and what about those who don't want to be in a company? They would just have to sleep on the streets? Somehow, I don't see SE making something as private as your own area to call your home require grouping with others to do so.
Exactly, which is why I think these kind of suggestions should be saved for when we do know more and can make more informed suggestions.Quote:

I don't see why you are so sure of it. There is no proof or even logical explanation of them attempting to do this.Quote:

And...
'Player housing' does not equal to 'private housing'.Quote:

Those who don't want to participate don't have to participate. There is no such concept of 'sleeping' in this game and we have been doing fine without private areas so far, I don't see how that would suddenly change.
I got a little annoyed when he singled out PSO for doing the apartment thing, you were on a space ship, I'm surprised they didnt just say you all slept in the cargo bay.
my major problem with purchasing real-estate in a non instance is that it comes at the cost of upkeep or risk losing the house, with the economy being almost entirely player driven it is not guaranteed how much money you are going to make beyond leves, and if you can make rent off leves, the more market savvy will have their houses paid off for years.
But besides that, sometimes players have to stop playing for a number of reasons and just cant make payments like that and nothing stings like losing something you worked on for reasons that were beyond your control.
(again i'm not against payments, just losing the house entirely for not paying, rather than access to it.)
Ps. Psion man your proposal is twice as good and ambitious as anything i was thinking up in regards to player housing.
I'm glad that people like it. ^^
Shameless bump since threads fall so quickly to obscurity with the post spam, and I don't want to lose mine. D:
And upkeep is an interesting problem as well, would we have to pay rent? If so, what are the consequences of not doing so? Being shut out of our houses, or perhaps our house slowly deteriorating from lack of funds to keep it in tip-top shape?
Heck, the latter option might be even more interesting as it opens up more appearance options. <_<
