Also, your oversimplified idea of game development doesn't help. When you create a different ruleset you need different code, no matter how simple the change, you still change the conditions in which the rules need to operate, and this means that every patch needs to be adapted to the new ruleset and need to be TESTED in it. Which will undoubtly slow down development and patching for everyone.
Your idea of "middle ground" is removing or drastically reducing accessibility of content to people that don't belong to your niche. That's not real middle ground. It's having a developer develop content only for the sake of a small niche.
Developing content accessible to everyone is the middle ground (and the only option considering the state of the game content-wise). Unfortunately some can't seem to be able to adapt to it.
