I actually kinda like the idea. Although I initially hated POL, I found it very useful after I got a chance to maneuver around in it. I also agree with Shinalia, and I think her ideas would be really awesome. It's kinda something you'd think SE would/could be focusing on....What a better way for a company like SE to make it so you can buy/play most if not all of their published titles??
Thing is, as great of an idea as it is....It would require quite a bit of resources and not only that, it would be a MAJOR change for SE in the way that they do business and idk if a company like SE would do or partake in any thing of that scale...Especially after the disaster that was FFXIV 1.0 happened to them, that they are still trying to fix. Considering this, I don't think that POL will ever have anything to do with any modern game going forward.

POL is still being updated, there's no reason they couldn't add an XIV executable to it. even more so now that XI is tied into SEAM
IMO SE should adapt playonline into their PC digital services. It's a very marketable and recognized name. There is a lot of untapped potential there to streamline and centralize their business.
Obviously Playonline is the new Steam.
I disliked PoL with a passion, having it maybe run through steam as others have mentioned - that is something I could get behind! But at the same time I worry, if it gets too complicated we may yet end up with another clusterf*** that playonline was D:
I like it as 1.0 was - log in and click play; not log in, click through 4 menus, click play and if you DC start from 3 menus back if you're lucky. D:
The hell.... why? Playonline made it take longer to get into the damn game. Screw playonline.

Play online wouldn't be necessary to run the game, simply adding an option to allow XiV to be executed from POL would be fine. POL still has tetra master too.
