You don't have to buy everything on the wards if you're a newbie, I'm pretty confident I could level a class from 1 to 50 using nothing but drops from chests and rewards from leves, NMs and dungeons.

actually prymortal if you compare some of the prices for gear on the wards to what the npcs sell the gear for it's usually about half the cost depending on what it's got. Now if it's Hq'd or melded double triple and regular of course the price is going to be higher. Also it would be like me knitting a dozen sweaters (which yarn is about 3 dollars a skein depending on the type) then I go on to ebay and sell it for $10 a piece... that's called making a profit and earning money. In this game we're supposed to be making money as a "job" for the crafting classes not to break even with the synths we make. (I'm leveling alch and goldsmith) so yes it might take less money or even no money at all to make said items but it's the time we put into the craft as well as the fact that we'll end up having to repair said gear and that will cost us money as well.. so time labor and keeping up on our own gear.
Level 8 gear you get cheap from NPC, level 9-20 gear you get for free from side quests (not the best gear, but good enough).
With 2.0 crafting get a bit easier again (example: ingame recipe book. Learn your recipes through level up, leves and quests). There should not be a problem for someone to learn a crafting class to save or earn some money.
Sidequests will fill only a couple of slots sadly. But there are also NMs which drop a lot of nice stuff if a person can find help for that.
And the number one answer on the board?
1. Make it yourself then!
Thanks for playing!
once again AN ITEM IS ONLY WORTH WHAT SOMEONE IS WILLING TO PAY FOR IT.
if you think 50k is too much for something then don't buy it, but i will assure you someone else will. if someone is willing to pay for it then it's worth the cost. if an items was up for sell for 50k for weeks and nobody would buy one then you would see the price drop, but if that doesn't happen and it sells the next goes up for the same price.
do i think a car should be worth 500k in real life? no, but because others do and are willing to spend that and up to millions on a car that makes them worth what people charge for them.
Tarus gotta make gil some how.
This is such a pointless thing to complain about. Obviously there is going to be a mark up, otherwise what is the incentive for the seller to level their craft, gather the materials, make items they don't need, take up retainer sell slots, etc. Even the mats that you think are so cheap are being marked up by the gatherers, since it cost them only time to get them.
If you want gear and don't want to pay the price in gil, then you have to spend the price in time. Go out and farm NMs, you can get decent gear to get all the way to 50 in other ways than just the market wards.
Don't try to make crafters seem greedy when they could just as easily call you lazy.
No. Sometimes they undercut items.
Quoted for emphasis. This point and the point about leveling a craft being a pain in the rear-end are the most important i think.
Also, to people complaining about undercutting: The only variables in our market system are price and +1 quality. Undercutting is necessary, so please stop whining. What are you going to do? Price an item with the same price as another player who listed before you and wait for it to sell? When everyone is trying to sell the same exact item the only difference is the price, so the non-insane person will list their item lower.
