Why not release it earlier?

This is normally what happens with a maintenance. They finish them earlier than planned in most cases.

They keep to the schedule when they know there is something like a world race happening. In this case, people will rush to get world first on the extreme trials. You can say "they're just extremes", but people do those too.

Normally it is only 24 hours for a big maintenance like this, but this time they went with 48 hours due to the large download. Now, to be honest, it didn't take me long to download, but some people still have slow internet speeds.
