Success! Not entirely sure what the problem was, but I uninstalled internet explorer then reinstalled it, ran an update to get IE9. Everything now works normally again. Thanks for all your help Grit!

i am having the same problem and its driving me mad lol as canadelf i brought the game 2 weeks ago and had to wait for the update but still getting as far as the play screen

Go into your FFXIV config utility from the start menu, hit the system button, and then copy to clipboard. Post that information here.
