War whips are pretty good in combat. Whip with lots of spikes and thorns on it. Flail and a morning star are also kind of like whips.
If you stopped looking at Twitter you'd have a more realistic view of what people may or may not like.
That said without the place you looked the thread is a waste to even make. I don't care what weapons any job has so long as it's designed decently and I don't fall asleep playing it.
I don't think devs would have any issues adding whips regardless of any modern-day perceived connotation to them. However not adding them due to frustration of animating their attacks, in which over 90% of the weapon is constantly moving... could be an issue. If they did add it, wouldn't be surprised if only the handles had unique appearances, and the whip portion looked the same across all skins, with a few palette swaps.
I have no problem with whips as long as we don't do a colonialism. If we go to the Americas, do a colonialism and everyone is walking around with a whip on their hip, I'm not gonna believe any of this was by mistake.
Even if the place with the Aztec monuments, Old West buildings and tacos wasn't the Americas, I'm gonna be mad if I have to come to these forums and argue why enslaving the natives was wrong. And I wish I was 100% confident that's not a conversation I'm gonna have to have, but Endwalker gave me trust issues.
Some outfits like the Qarn jacket already have whips built into them
