Well, I know that feeling from other games. In every other game my guild/FC started doing other things like raiding, extreme farming and playing other games.
As long as they saw some advantage in me, they talked to me.
Was always the same shit, like, "Oh, could you make me some gear, weapons, etc.", "Could you lend me some money?", "Could you please do Dungeon XYZ so my character can level up faster?"
And stuff like that further.
The moment I said no, they moved on. I've always done so much for them, I've given them gear, weapons, jewelry, minions, mounts, houses...what I couldn't craft I've bought.
I even helped them level their characters. But when I asked for help, they all didn't have time.
I thought I'd never learn my lesson until I got to Final Fantasy 14...
I've never had a friend here, never had an FC, ignored all FC invites and will never join one.
Never helped anyone again, never added anyone to my friends list, never talked to players about me.
And I have no regrets. I come online when I want, I go offline when I want. When I Login there is no one bothering me with questions or stupid stories about his/her life.
Set your priorities and don't care about others. Then you won't be disappointed anymore.

I've been playing since ARR and never joined an actual FC, 99% are dead or just for memes and then move to discord.
If you aren't into raiding FC's are pointless and will ruin how your nickname in game looks with that obligatory <tag>. -

FCs don't serve a lot of purpose except being a "free" company of people. Buffs? You can get better ones from Squadrons. FC exclusive rewards? Non-existent. Workshop? Limited to the FC leader and whoever they appoint.
There's no point joining one unless they are your friends and you want to be part of the group. I wish there were more incentives keeping or joining one.
I gave up on that system a long long time ago. Linkshell with your friends across servers does the same job as the free company chat. -

Most only invite people so they get the fc credits to buy stuff and submarine tanks so the leader and friends can get gil. They dont really care about the person they are inviting at all. Some advice, if a medium-big fc random invites or /tells an invites you just decline. Not worth being ignored and used as you arent part of the leaders clique.

Real talk tho - I'm baffled at how people claim it is impossible to find friends.
I understand that it can be difficult when people are just silent... but not everyone is silent all the time? I've met all of my good friends through the game not Discord. Met one through RP, one through admiring each others glam, one from standing next to each other fishing, multiple from PF raiding... Hell. I made one through slinging insults at each other after a particularly bad run in PotD. We traded words back and forth until it was actually devolving into meme talk and realized we found the other funny. We've been good friends for 5 years now.
Maybe people just don't take the initiative enough.
I don't use FC to socialize though. My FC is only me.
