It's understandable that devs want to use great engine with amazing documentation for mere 5% of their revenue (assuming game even makes 1M, if not, you don't even need to pay royalties).
On the other side, if devs choose to make their game Epic launcher exclusive to get better split than on Steam, you know their greed overpowered their good intentions. Players do not want to use Epic launcher, that's simple fact. Shitty user experience a spyware allegations aside, it's much more comfy to have everything on your steam account.
But you see much less exclusives nowadays, since most devs realized that better split isn't really better if people won't bother buying it in first place. Some people even resort to pirating only because they despise Epic launcher so much.
In the end, Steam offers so much more discoverability and advertisement, so their split isn't really that bad as some devs claim.
