For anyone with an existing XI account, they are having a free login campaign ATM if you're needing that XI fix.

In its prime the game felt rewarding and ripped your heart out at the same time.

Starting off getting my ass kicked by skeletons, just to watch a Dragoon high jump from his mount and kill them to save me. Coolest thing I had seen in a long time, and that's what made me want to play a DRG. That was my best memory of it.
Getting poisoned and running all the way to the zone entrance, only to die to something that would never wear off. That was my worst memory of it, and it happened more than once.
I never went back to the game after that and uninstalled it.
I do wish I still play FFXI but since the subs are separate with FFXIV, I can't sub both since it's quite pricey :(
I enjoyed playing as DNC Galka there :)
Happy Birthday FFXI-- my very first MMORPG-- thank you for the memories and for the excellent friends I met around the world.
One of the fondest memories I have is getting to level 5 and meeting my first two friends-- a TaruTaru named Leverate and a fellow Elvaan named Jobrant-- together the three of us took immense pride in defending the campfire spots in Ronfaure from the Orcs and Gobs. For some very crazy weird reason, this trivial, unremarkable, obscure duty still marks itself as one of my greatest and important achievements in FFXI. Looking back, it's insane how proud I felt to be San'dorian.

Other fond memories off the top of my head
- Figuring out how to finally open my map from the menu after more than a couple hours from my first log in-- prior to that, I wandered the entirety of Port Sandy and North Sandy in fascinated bewilderment.
- Finally figuring out the chat function after I saw a Galka Monk Japanese player in full AF standing beside me and I was thrilled when he patiently kept answering all my questions in English-- we are still friends till this day.
- That-- "Aha" moment-- when I found out stuff like crystals could stack-- and from there made good funds farming Mushrooms for dark crystals
- I saw DRK AF for the first time and drooled-- then moments later, I also saw Carby for the first time in Ronfaure and joined a bunch of new players who kept running after this strange creature with a bluish glow.
- Attaining Level 7 and getting super excited to try on my new white and grey Leather armour set-- became even more proud when I hit level 10 and scraped together gil to get the reddish scale armour set
- I remember yelling "OMG!" at my screen the first time I saw how much exp could be earned within a full party at the Dunes-- and the generous lvl 50 WHM who stayed with us for a few hours-- she's also still a friend till this day and she welcomed her second son last year.
- Making it to Jeuno for the first time because a group of level 55-ish to 60-ish players offered to take me there-- one of the players and his wife are also still my friends till today.
- Getting the Chocobo licence (I then rode to Bastok and Windy for the first time)-- was just as ecstatic to get my beloved Red Destrier personal chocobo a few years later
- Obtaining my first limit quest and had a blast marveling at the horrendous drop rates for exoray and the almighty "paper"-- and actually did the second limit quest in Xarcabard with the help of none other than the great Pikko --she was the famous "goddess of gardening"
- Doing Campaign and laughing at the piles of bodies when it all went horribly wrong
- Beating Maat, making my first trip to sky (and the ensuing galactic-level fights over cloth drop from Kirin), hanging out with LS members in Ru'Lude Garden-- and don't get me started on the hilarious jokes in shout from people hanging out in the Archduke's bedroom.
- Then there were the dozens upon dozens of dancing Tarus in Lower Jeuno, always mobbing players for gil after they had performed a routine-- trust me, they made the Lalas look meek in comparison
- Aaah yes-- and when one got bored in Port Jeuno, you put "/follow" on Red Ghost (the Galkan Jeunoan Ducal Guard) and join like 30-40 players who would be marching behind him
- Other memories-- reaching Rank 10 in Sandy, joining my first HNMLS and helping my crew being the first HNMLS to clear Dynamis Xarcabard on the server
- Performing "Mob-Police" for new players in Qufim and Jungle-- my main job was Paladin, so I always loved this task-- btw, completing my PLD AF2 set back in 2007 was one of my proudest achievements in the game (see pic below)
Geeze-- I could go on and on for the next few hours-- and I got the feels again when someone sent me this pic of the LS-- fun times indeed

Thank you FFXI and Vana'diel -- it was my honor to defend you as a humble Paladin
I never played XI in its prime, but I played through the main story quests in 2017-2018 and pop back in during free login campaigns to try out different classes and interesting looking quests.
My favourite memories include:
-reaching Sky and Sea for the first time. I feel they hold up well as cool expansion final areas
-finally beating the last boss of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel solo after many failed attempts in which I timed out
-leveling Blue Mage and traveling the world learning skills. Breaks my heart that we can't have a real unlimited Blu here. :(
During the login campaign going on right now I took SCH to 75 and did its AF quests. Just GEO and RUN quests left to go!
