Oh I thought they did that already. I had to login to my Steam account through something XIV related recently. I think inputting my expansion key.
Like people noted this is most likely a contractual issue between Valve and SE. It's the same for other MMORPGs as well, back in my ESO days I remember that the ZOS dev's commented that they really would like to offer that (ESO has the same problem) but that Valve doesn't allow that. Never, ever buy a game with an online account system (like MMORPGs) on Steam.
They really should add a HUGE disclaimer on the account creation page, but that will never happen ...
Sounds more like a security risk than additional security on their new policy.
Used FFXIV Steam version with nada issues since 2014. I don't see where all the crying is coming from.
What's wrong with the Steam version?
I don't think it's crying to want to be able to have the freedom to utilize their account on the platform of their choice. I've used Steam since 2014 too with zero issues, but it sucks that those who want to move to a specific different platform don't have the freedom to do so. Though it does sound like the issue is more on Steam's side and tied to their requirements. So some pressure should be put on Steam in this as well as SE to find a workable solution.
I'm still on fire (till i ff appears in steam) that i cant merge my accounts into one... so, as an owner of 3 sa (lol kek) i just must chose: the things with "stop using steam" and lose all the rewards and characters, but a normal launcher and 1.0 character
or damn steam runner, with all the pains, but dont lose my rewards
just why... why cant i simply get one account and merge them...
Posting more or less the same thing I said the last time they required the game launch through Steam. I'd also buy the game again to get away from Steam. I'm pretty sad that I might not be able to play anymore, I hope it's not as bad as it sounds and there'll be a workaround.
Complaining last time did nothing at all, so I don't have much hope for this.
Because it's annoying and has caused issues for some people. The issues for me have been minor and brief, but they have been there. There's been at least one time where I couldn't log into ff at all because steam wasn't working for a bit.
We also used to be able to launch and play without having steam running at all, but not anymore. Apparently there's some workaround for this, but I haven't managed to get it to work.
It's also just the fact this is now the second time they've changed how people need to access their account on the steam version. And only the steam version. It's annoying.
Agreed, let me have the option to move off of Steam please! Would definitely buy the game again to be able to do it.
What exactly is the change? I looked at the link and it's not clear to me at all.
