I've been called generic by friends and people in different FCs but it's a bit ironic when they themselves are copy/paste sun seeker miqos or face 1 lizard girls with eye type 3.
Female gear seems to be designed for midlander hyur and then ported to the other body types so everything looks good on me and I have no ears or tails to clip anything. I don't need to have special extra body parts to feel like I'm in a fantasy game so playing a human is fine. I also haven't bumped into any doppelgangers so I feel like I'm the only me out there and that there isn't a legion of players playing my character.

I've heard plenty of "but why play Hyur, I'm already human, they look so boring, so generic, tails and ears are so much cooler und unique, oh god that running animation is so dumb, fem Midlander is the worst of all" and so on.
I'm not a fan of having a myriad of extra parts that are furry, scaly or something else, so I generally go for humans in RPGs. To me, it's actually more immersive than having horns, tails, scales, ears, claws etc. but that's just my personal preference. Nothing clips or moves weirdly, glamours look fantastic from cute or pretty to rugged or masculine and I don't think any of the races have an interesting idle facial expressions, so no real difference for me there.
They desperately need more good faces because they look outdated especially compared to Viera but other than that, I'm happy with my little Middie.

Honestly see the 'OMG WHY YOU PICK HUMAN THIS IS FANTASY' thing crop up on every MMO I've played.
For me personally, I usually pick humans at times because they allow me to experience the fantasy of the world from a relatable perspective. It's not 'REALLY' as if having tails, scales or fuzz neccessarily adds such an extra additional layer of complexity that blows just looking 'ordinary' out of the water. Those are superficial things at best. On top of that, wouldn't the 'most played' or 'more popular' races be more generic? For example if you're the only hyur midlander in a room full of miqo'te or au'ra... who really looks boring? xD
Honestly, just throw on a cat ear headband/glue on a tail or slap on some scales and horns... and miqo'te/au'ra/hyur midlander females do not look drastically different. Can't say the same for the males. They look a lot more distinctive. One of my complaints about the au'ra female model is that I think they should look more 'grown up' like the male counter parts and less like scaly miqo'te.
That being said, I don't see a lot of hate or toxicity being thrown at midlanders. I see much more 'all miqo'te female characters are just thots and e-girls'.

I've never heard of anyone hating them but I don't care for the run cycle.
Honestly the Miqo'te and Lalafell are the most meme'd on races.
-
The only complaint I tend to see, or share for that matter, is the run animation.
You do occasionally find the 'omg why would you play a HUMAN in a FANTASY game have you no imagintion?!' type but that's not specifically directed at female midlanders.
-
I like them just fine.
It's just that Catgirls have way better animations and are far more expressive. They also look cuter.
-
The only races I see people genuinely disliking are Roegadyn and Elezen, with Lalafell being more of a meme thing than anything.
-
I've honestly never heard any of the original OP's complaints.
As to the "dead inside" comment, I think ANYONE looks like that if they're not targeting someone. Everyone has that blank stare, if not.

Only complaint I ever heard from any of my friends was their princess run.

What is the princess run?
