All the mysteries that I enjoyed got solved in a rush, and I was left unsatisfied. If next expansions are small self contained stories, then I'll continue playing every expansion, forever. If they start another huge story, I'll think about it... don't want to be invested for years just to end disappointed again.
Theres no filler, Yoshi P reffered to the next "season"/arc as Major.
And obviously ill continue playing, no reason not to. They write good stories, so the next arc will be just as good if not better.
I mean, a certain character teases what we should go do next (and probably 6.patches or 7 hinting.)
I cut off the speakers name.

It really depends on the content.
We could get a Blitzer class, a Green Mage class with a greathammer, Valefor, Griever, Pupus, Balthier, Minwu, Zeromus, and a Kefka/Warring Triad Ultimate. They could move toward a more exploration/frontier vibe.
Or we could get an underwhelming Beastmaster class, a janky Lady Luck Time Mage class, JENOVA, Vivi, Vegnagun, Barthandelus, and a Sora cameo. They could lean even harder into homogenous cyberpunk-magitech-blah.
There's enough left in the series for the devs to pull fanservice from, for me a lot of it just depends which titles (evens or odds?), what they pull, and how they contextualize it.
Yes a major story arc has come to an end but right now I dont plan on quitting the game. Depending on where they go with the gameplay systems I might play it less over time but the story is just one (but also important) part of why I continue paying for it. And I honestly hope that at least the next few expansions are closed stories. This way if I may find myself not happy with the gameplay part and the story I can stop playing the game without "missing" the end of a story.
So to answer your question: No right now it wont be the last expansion.
We haven't even seen half the places on the star, not to mention there are still many many shards we haven't visited. I for one am interested to see what the new story holds and what the future of this game brings.
Yes, it was ultimate meh, and I am fed up with how mediocre stories here are.
FFXI did not shut down. The game is up and running and gets plenty of patches.
