IF you get the duel and IF you know how to do it perfectly or have the potskill to cheese it and IF the game doesn't lag you into one of the always fatal AOE's.

I got all but one note without doing any duel. The only one I don't have is Lyon from southern front. It drops from the duel or from castrum lacus litore, and I think I'll try the duel because I don't really feel like grinding castrum. They are rare but they do drop. (not sure about the suthern front lyon though).
The amount of fearmongering (which is understandable ironically) against the duel is pretty staggering.
I think the duel ones are fine and I just recommend doing the cheese strat if these are your last ones and due to the notoriety system you will eventually be picked for these (it'll take time but be better than just rng).
However I think a few notes could be allowed to drop from some additional skirmishes particularly Meryrll' s notes in Zadnor, this is a 2* note that only drops from a rare spawning skirmish chain (due to being tied to a duel) , this note was my 2nd to last due to getting this skirmish to spawn and rng just being awful.
I think the duel system is flawed in this game.
1) It is not something you can practice. A raid can be wiped and re-attempted multi times. This one? One mistake and your entire attempt is gone for a while. I will take Blade and Soul for example. This game does many things wrong, but its solo dungeons when first released are always good challenge to tackle. You will tank floor or a lot, but step by step, you will learn the fight and gain confident along the way. Duels in FF14? You have a chance to be selected, and a chance to win with zero-training.
2) Stage anxiety, because other people will gather, if not for watching you, it it for the x2 mettle buff. No one will say a thing if you lose, mainly cuz they don't dare to as FF14 is known for having strict GM that will ban criticism against other players. Some will certainly feel bitter, however, because their chance to get something nice is determined whether then guy in that duel performs well or not (mostly not). It raises unnecessary resentment, even just a for a brief while.
3) Being able to cheese if you play certain classes. Honestly, it is rare to see duels withouting see a class that is not a caster equipped with Lost Flare Stare + a ton of buff. There are people who do non-cheese and win, of course, but they are like 1 out 10. While it may be nice for players to have an easy way out, especially in this "challenging yourself" content, I don't see the point of having a cheese. It makes the title you earn from winning those duels feel cheap.
And then, we have the loot. The cute RNG loot. There must be some kind of rule-of-thumb that RNG as the only way toward achievement is a bane of all joy. Don't bother defend it if you're lucky with your loot after doing a FATE a few times/day and get a luckly drop after a week, cuz some people do hundreds for a month and see nothing but frustration.
