He should have tried to obtain more information, and to vet that information. It's something he should have learned during the course of his adventures, mainly because from what we see of his adventures through the Cardinal Virtues echo visions and Seto's short story, Ardbert going off half-informed and having to be reined in by his comrades is something that happened in his early days, but by the time he learned the true identity of the Shadowkeeper, he put in enough thought to identify a true mastermind.
