This is how I tend to lean as well. My only real FF experience has been FFXI and FFXIV - so both of the MMOs. I greatly appreciaeted how XI did not lock content behind 100% full completion of all prior storylines/MSQ. There were still requirements you had to meet, with most being fairly reasonable, but the game let you pick and choose what you wanted to do. Each expansion came with it's own independent story, and so I imagine this made options easier.
Obviously XIV handles it in a vastly different way, and I can appreciate that the world they've made with a story that is continually being built upon. I wish there was a way for them to make some of it optional. I've never played another MMO that makes you complete 100% of the story missions if you want to be able to play current content.
Now, I have no idea what spawned this topic, at least not at this point. Perhaps just wanted to see some bickering between the sides as that does seem to eventually creep in. Maybe it's just a random thought they had. Who knows. So far this seems calm, so that's nice. :P
I think most reasonable people wouldn't care how others play the game.
It's when someone boosted and skipped as much as they can and rushed as fast as they can to "endgame" and then complain that the game doesn't have enough to do or that story is mandatory that a reality check might be in order. The game is what it is and some people like it how it is, and while everyone is still entitled to their opinions and can make requests to the devs based on those subjective opinions, there can be opposition from other people who feel differently about the game. Alternatively, there may be other games that are more suited to your preferred playstyle.
At any case, if you can enjoy the game for what it is, then just continue to play however you want and enjoy it however you like.
Cool. You know there's a blog free to use on lodestone right?
Oh man, i feel bad for you. The voice-over scenes are the best. Especially further down the line, they give the good goosebumps.
Hey, once 5.3 hits you'll be able to take that story at your own pace
Thats really too bad. FFXIV's story is one of the best in a Final Fantasy game to date. (and I'd wager in most fantasy MMOs also.)
But to each their own. :)
Meanwhile I'm on the other end of the spectrum where I take almost too long to get through the story because I want to savor it.
I just want to say one thing: objectively, FFXIV's main selling point is its story. Thankfully, it offers other things as well that, although not as widely publicized, players can enjoy. Most played MMOs have a main thing that either devs/publishers/players speak/write about.
Do I agree that we need to do away with the mentality that if you don't enjoy the story, you need to uninstall and play something else or worse, being chided for it? Absolutely. But let's not pretend that the story isn't the main selling point of the game, especially with how successful shb's story has been lauded.
There is no shame in not playing the game for story. You can skip cutscenes all you like. There are plenty of people who only raid and play the game for raiding.
The only counter to that is that you can never complain about the lack of content in the game.
