Precisely. Super old but extremely powerful wizard sacrifices himself for the world saving party is a trope as old as time. At this point, no one cares who started it and tbh, acting like some other piece of media copied it in recent years simply means that one hasn't watched enough of this trope to shrug it off and move on.

Now I haven't actually played the Elsweyr expansion (even though I own it), but isn't that guy supposed to be Abnur Tharn? Dude is far from good.

He's a lot less of a jerk this time around, and became far more likeable in the expansion and Dragonhold DLC.

SE outsourced the making of some? all? of their cinematics maybe Zenimax diid as well.

I do get Cabalabob's point though, book description =/= cinematography no matter how good it is. The Gandalf scenes in the films are choreographed and storyboarded in the exact same way that XIV FMVs are, novels are very very different.
