I'm just wondering how the fight mechanics would work, short of just rehashing Phantom Train. I don't really remember Doomtrain that well (8 wasn't one of my favorite FFs).

I would settle for a Doom Train Mount. That would be cool!
I think and believe that Doomtraon will be addes in the patch that continues with Hildibrand s story and that Doomtrain will be part of the storys boss battle becoming later a trial battle for the eoulette, just like SE did do that before with Gilgamesh/Yojinbo, so i guess the story will play in Amh Araeng that place that is full of train lines , would make most sense to add the summon as a trial battle that way
reading Hildibrand and Doomtrain in one sentence make me (as the one who never play another ff titles thoroughly so I don't familiar with the original doomtrain) think of a troll trials :
the boss is doomtrain,
the mechanics is consist solely of doom debuffs and it's variety,
you must dispel the doom before the timer run out or you die,
either dispel by esuna, full heal, stepping in platform, combination, or other means (death and be raised considered as a strat ?)
doom will come one another until you finished the trials...
I wonder how's the fight will turn out... .-.
I wonder why Final Fantasy has such a thing about killing monsters with summoned trains.

I'm going to give your post a like just for this. So many people I know always confuse the two!
Maybe they can add a doom train dungeon or raid. Where whole dungeon or raid takes place inside doom train and you work your way to front of it then fight doom train.
